Lightning kills three in State

Bangalore, May 12: Heavy rain which lashed several districts in the State has claimed the lives of three persons, cattle and has left a trail of destruction in several villages.


Suresh Pujari and his two oxen were killed when they were struck by lightning, while they were ploughing the field at Panegaom village in Gulbarga on Friday.

In Udanur village, three oxen were killed when they were struck by lightning. Another person was struck by lightning at Haliyal, in Uttara Kannada district because of lightning.

The details of the dead are unavailable. In another incident of lightning, Basappa Suganalli, 38, was killed at Kusalapur in Shiratti taluk of Gadag district.

Heavy rain with gusty winds on Thursday night have left 500 coconut trees and more than 1,500 banana plants uprooted at Arasikere taluk in Hassan district.

The asbestos roofs of 10 houses were blown away. Losses have been put at Rs five lakh . Heavy rain lashed Bendekere, Basavarajpura, Shanthanahalli, Haratanahalli, Puralehalli villages in the taluk.

An electricity pole which broke into two halves fell on the drinking water tank, thereby halting water and power supply to the village. Rainwater gushed into several houses damaging the foodgrains and other items.

A coconut tree fell on a transformer and damaging it in one of the fields.

H D Kote taluk in Mysore received good rainfall. Agricultural produce worth lakhs of rupees including 300 banana plants, 140 drumstick plants belonging to farmer Ksheerasagara, from Vaddaragudi village have been destroyed.

Heavy downpour accompanied with hailstones, lightning and thunder during noon provided much needed respite from the summer heat for the residents of Belgaum City.


In Dharwad City, major drains and roads were overflowing due to rain which lashed for more than two hours on Friday evening.

Traffic movement came to a grinding halt leading to chaos and confusion. Several low-lying areas including Jannat Nagar, Lakshmisinghanakeri, Koppadkeri, Haveripete, Murugha Mutt area, Bhavikatti plot, Tollnaka, Honnatti Chawl, etc were inundated with rainwater. Dark clouds and lack of power supply turned the city into pitch dark.

The compound wall belonging to SC?Puranik near Rayara Mutt was damaged in the rain. According to the Director of Meteorological Department Puttanna, more rains are expected in the North Karnataka and coastal region in next few days.

Cuttack, Jan 16: At least 15 passengers were injured as five coaches of the Mumbai-Bhubaneswar Lokmanya Tilak Express derailed and three more were displaced after colliding with a goods train amid heavy fog near Cuttack in Odisha on Thursday, railway officials said.

Railway officials had earlier said that 25 passengers were injured in the incident but later officers who reached the site reported that four passengers were found to have suffered major injuries and 11 had received minor injuries.

Passengers with major injuries have been sent to Cuttack Medical College. All passengers are stated to be out of danger.

Officials said the accident happened when the passenger train hit the guard van of a good train around 7 am between Salagaon and Nergundi stations.

The officials said there was heavy fog at the site but it was not clear what led to the accident. The speedometer of both the trains have been seized for inquiry, East Coast Railway Spokesperson J P Mishra said.

Buses have been arranged for all remaining passengers to move towards their destination.

Cuttack is around 10-12 km away and Bhubaneswar(Terminating station) is 35 km.

The accident disrupted train services in the area.

Five trains have been affected due to the accident where restoration work in underway. These include the Bhubaneswar-Mumbai LTT SF Express, the Puri-Rourkela Express, Dhanbad-Bhubaneshwar Rajyarani Express which have all been diverted via Naraj.

"East Coast Railway acknowledges with deep gratitude help of nearby locals and villagers who have displayed great humanitarian values and come to the rescue of injured passengers," Mishra said.

New Delhi, Jun 8: A 10-month-old girl allegedly lost her life in an accident in West Delhi's Tilak Nagar area, the police said on Sunday.

"The incident took place when the baby was in the compound of the parking area at the ground floor of her residence and the driver of Mercedes Benz was reversing the car," a police official said.

The deceased was identified as Radhika, whose father Rakesh used to work as the security guard in the said residence.

The unfortunate incident occurred at around 3.30 p.m. in the afternoon following which the baby was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital where she was declared brought dead.

The owner of the said Mercedes Benz SUV is identified as Jassbir Singh who is into elevator business. At the time of the incident, his driver Akhilesh was driving the said vehicle.

"The offending vehicle has also been taken into possession and the FSL team is being summoned for inspection. Investigation in this matter is underway," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) West Delhi.

New Delhi, May 9: A 23-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide at the AIIMS here after her mother died of cancer at the hospital, police said on Saturday.

She was reported missing after her mother passed away on Wednesday and her body was found near the new private ward block of the hospital on Saturday, they said, adding that she fell to her death from a building.

"Her mother was a cancer patient. She was being treated at the hospital and had died during treatment on Wednesday," Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Atul Kumar Thakur said.

Her father was busy in the formalities when she left the area. She was reported missing since Wednesday. The family hails from Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh, a senior police officer said.

Hospital staff noticed the body and informed the police. The block was closed due to which nobody found out about it earlier, police said.

Police said she had called her friends and told them that she was going to kill herself. The body has been recovered and an inquest proceeding is underway.
