Probe ordered after 36 babies die at Srinagar's Govt hospital in two weeks

Srinagar, May 17: Another baby died today at the state-run GB Pant Hospital in Srinagar, taking the number of infant deaths in the state in the last two weeks to 36. According to Medical Education Minister RS Chib, a total of 358 children have died at the hospital since January 1 this year.

There were protests in Srinagar over the alarming number of infant deaths after which the state government ordered an investigation into the matter. The investigation panel will be headed by Showkat Ali Zargar, who is the director of the prestigious Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Soura (SKIMS). Mr Zargar has been asked to submit his report within a week.

Leading the protests against the government outside the GB Pant Hospital today was Engineer Rashid, an Independent MLA from north Kashmir's Langate constituency. Mr Rashid slammed the government over alleged lack of basic amenities at the hospital and urged the Chief Minister to intervene.


"We want the government to reply. For 1,700 patients, the hospital has just three ventilators. On Friday, I will lodge an FIR (first information report) against the doctors in connection with the deaths," he said. "It is nothing short of a mass murder," he added.

Minister RS Chib has said that the probe will find out if negligence on behalf of the officials of the hospital led to the deaths. He has also assured help on behalf of the state government.

"We are examining the reasons and trying to find out corrective measures so that precious lives can be saved. If ventilators are in shortage at the hospital, more will be procured and the nursing staff will be increased," he said on Wednesday.

Meerut: The licence of a private hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut has been suspended after a video showing its staff member providing fake Covid-19 report had gone viral.

"A video had gone viral in Meerut. We have registered a case in this regard. We have suspended the licence of the nursing home. Today, we have sealed it also. Strict action will be taken against anybody who will do something like this in this time of crisis,” said Anil Dhingra, District Magistrate, Meerut.

In the video, the person can be heard saying that they provide Covid-19 negative report for Rs 2,500, Dhingra stated.

Meerut CMO Rajkumar said, “In the video, a man from the hospital can be heard saying that he can arrange COVID-19 negative report and the person can get operation or other things done. We have identified the man. We have suspended the licence of the hospital and an FIR has been registered.”

Mumbai, May 10: A 32-year old man, running a bakery here has been arrested for alleged promotion of products using a tagline that said his firm does not employ Muslims, police said on Sunday.

The man, who is also selling his products online had allegedly said "made by Jains on orders, no Muslim staff" for promotion purposes in his WhatApp group.

A complaint was lodged against him saying the words depicted Muslims in a bad light and Mambalam police registered a case and arrested him, a release said adding a probe was on.

Recently, a man was arrested in Mumbai after he allegedly refused to collect groceries he had ordered online since the delivery person was a Muslim.

May 12: A Madhya Pradesh Police sub-inspector was fined Rs 5,000 after he performed a daredevil act of balancing himself on two moving cars, copying the famous stunt from Ajay Devgn-starrer 'Singham'.

Manoj Yadav, the in-charge of Narsinghgarh police post in Damoh district, was also warned against any such daredevilry in future, police sources said on Monday.

Sporting shades as the hero of the cop drama film and wearing his police uniform, Yadav got the entire episode video-graphed, they said.

As the video of the stunt went viral on social media, senior police officials took serious note of it as it will send wrong signals to youngsters, the sources said.

Inspector General, Sagar range, Anil Sharma directed Damoh Superintendent of Police Hemant Chauhan to probe the matter.

After an investigation, Chauhan imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the sub-inspector and warned him not to repeat such mistakes.
