Dubai, June 1: A man who published a woman’s picture on Facebook a year-and-a-half ago was stabbed to death by the woman’s brother on Wednesday, Dubai Police said.

Brigadier Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Director of Dubai Police’s Criminal Investigation Department, said the suspect stabbed the man at least 10 times and was found in a pool of blood in basement parking in Jafiliya area.

The victim was identified as M.D., a 30-year-old Indian who worked as an accountant in a furnished apartment building.

The victim’s colleagues told police that a man came asking for him by name earlier and took him out. The two went to the basement parking before the visitor was seen fleeing the building in a hurry.

Examination of the body showed the victim was stabbed 10 times in the abdomen, and his facial features were distorted, which led to the conclusion that the killer had a grudge against him, police said.

A watchman of a nearby building said he saw a man running and getting into a white car parked near his building. He said the man was bleeding from a cut in his right hand.

Few leads

Since there were few leads in the murder, the case was discussed with Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai Police Chief, who advised CID to adopt a plan to close in on the suspect, starting with his injury and the need to get treatment, Lieutenant Colonel Ahmad Al Merri, Director of the Investigation Department, said.

The suspect’s picture, taken from the closed circuit television footage in the building where the victim worked, was distributed to all entry points to ensure he does not leave the country.

Ten hours later, a corporal in Dubai International Airport Terminal 3 recognised the suspect, who was checking his bags at the first class check-in counter. The corporal called the witness who first saw the suspect at the victim’s workplace to identify him, and he did.

The suspect told interrogators that the victim used to work with his sister in Kerala and got hold of her personal pictures, which he posted on Facebook and other websites along with obscene comments.

He said his complaint about the victim’s behaviour fell on deaf years when he reported to police in his home country, so he decided to take the law into his own hands in the UAE.

The suspect was referred to Public Prosecution.

Patna, Jul 17: A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a security guard at the Covid-19 quarantine center of the Patna Medical College Hospital where she was admitted after being rescued from a railway station, police said on Thursday.

The accused, Mahesh (40), was arrested on Wednesday night after being booked under the POCSO Act and other relevant IPC sections by the Pir Bahore police station, according to Arti Jaiswal, the in-charge of the women's police station here.

“The accused is being sent to jail while the victim will be undergoing medical tests on Thursday, as is the norm for all sexual assault survivors," Jaiswal said.

The girl had run away from her home in Nalanda district more than a week ago and reached Barh railway station on the outskirts of Patna to catch a train for Kolkata where her father is a daily wage-earner, police said.

She was spotted by Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel who informed the child helpline. The child helpline personnel, taking note of the girl’s tender age and her disturbed frame of mind, convinced her not to undertake the journey and brought her to the hospital’s quarantine ward for COVID-19 suspects as a precautionary measure, they said.

On the night of July 8, a few hours after the girl's arrival at the hospital, she was caught hold of by the accused inside the bathroom and allegedly raped. The accused also threatened her with dire consequences if she spilt the beans and, as per the FIR, kept harassing her sexually.

She finally decided to speak up when another girl, carrying a mobile phone, was similarly brought to the hospital by child helpline a couple of days ago. Using the fellow inmate’s phone, she narrated her ordeal to the helpline personnel who informed the police.

“Her Covid-19 test report is negative. After her examination, for the sexual assault, by a six-member medical board is over, she will be sent to a shelter home by the child helpline," Jaiswal said.

Meanwhile, state women’s commission chairperson Dilmani Mishra strongly reacted to the incident and said, “We are waiting for the medical reports of the girl. We will ensure that justice is done in the matter.”
