Bangalore, June 18: A seven-year-old girl was brutally raped and murdered by her father’s friend at Nallurahalli near Whitefield on Saturday night.

The body of Jayasudha, daughter of Basavaraju, a mason from Raichur, was found floating in a lake at the village on Sunday morning. Nagaraj, 28 who confessed to the crime has been arrested.

He too is a resident of Nallurahalli and works as a help at a garage.

According to Mahadevi, mother of the girl, Nagaraj took away Jayasudha from a temple, where she had gone with her sisters to attend a fair. “My three daughters came back running and said Nagaraj had taken away Jaya. I never saw her alive again,” said a sobbing Mahadevi.

Basavaraju had barred Nagaraj, a neighbour, from entering their house a few months ago when Mahadevi complained to him about Nagaraj’s behaviour. “He hasn’t visited us since. But he had been friendly with my children and used to bring chocolates and biscuits to them,” Basavaraju said.

On Saturday, Nagaraj helped the girls to eat food at the temple. He even washed their hands after the food. While the four were leaving for home, he lured Jaya offering her chocolates. Jaya went with Nagaraj, ignoring the warnings from her eldest sister Ambramma, 10. When Ambramma tried to stop Jaya from going with Nagaraj, the latter slapped her and shoved her away, Basavaraju added.

“We searched for Jaya and Nagaraj all through the night. Someone told us he had taken Jaya to the lake. After we complained to the police Sunday morning, they joined us in the search,” he said.

The police retrieved the body and a post mortem was conducted at the Bowring Hospital. Basavaraju’s family had come to the City in search of jobs from Sangapura, near Manvi in Raichur four years ago. The couple have two other daughters – Sridevi, 9, and Sevanti, 5 – all studying at a government school.

Based on the account given by Ambramma, Whitefield police arrested Nagaraj from his house on Sunday.

On interrogation, he confessed to raping the girl repeatedly. When she fell unconscious, he pushed her into the lake, fearing that she may inform her parents about the incident.

She was reported missing after her mother passed away on Wednesday and her body was found near the new private ward block of the hospital on Saturday, they said, adding that she fell to her death from a building.

"Her mother was a cancer patient. She was being treated at the hospital and had died during treatment on Wednesday," Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Atul Kumar Thakur said.

Gorakhpur, Feb 16: Two unidentified policemen allegedly raped a 20-year-old woman in a hotel room near a railway station in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur.

The incident took place on Thursday after which the woman informed her family members. The FIR was registered in the matter on Friday, police said.

A case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including gang rape has been registered against two unidentified police men at the Gorakhnath police station, they said.

No arrests have been made so far in this connection, the police added.

Members of various political parties including Congress, Samajwadi Party, BSP and Purvanchal Sena staged a sit-in demonstration at the office of the district magistrate (DM) demanding suspension of all staff members of the Gorakhnath police station as well as a magisterial probe into the matter.

"The girl is undergoing treatment at the district hospital. She has made serious allegation of rape by two policemen. During investigation we found that the hotel has CCTV footage and also took the statement of guard," SSP Gorakhpur, Sunil Kumar Gupta said.

"Prima facie, the woman went to the hotel room willingly with some men. However, a probe is underway and culprits won't be spared," he said.

The woman told media that both the policemen thrashed her and accused her of being involved in prostitution.

She claimed that she requested them to leave her but they beat her and raped her. Later, they asked her to go home in an autorickshaw.

The survivor also told media and investigating policemen that she will be able to identify the hotel room where the crime took place as well as the two policemen who allegedly raped her.

The woman said she runs coaching classes at her home and her father is a labourer.
