Bangalore, July 7: Three labourers who were on their way to work on a motorbike were crushed under the wheels of a college bus near Devanahalli Friday morning.

The accident occurred when Kantharaju (22), Gangaraju (35) and Naveen (23), all residents of Kurubarakunte, were proceeding towards Doddaballapur. Kantharaju was riding the two-wheeler.

According to police, the bike suddently entered the main road near Kannamangala Gate, and the driver of the bus (KA-20/B-6598), belonging to Nagarajuna College of Engineering and Technology, lost control of the vehicle and rammed the two-wheeler.

Kantharaju and Gangaraju died on the way to a nearby hospital while Naveen breathed his last hours later in a hospital. Vehicular movement on the road was affected for over an hour. The driver of the bus is absconding.

A large crowd gathered at the accident spot and staged a flash protest against the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). K Srinivas, the founder-president of Maruthi Education Trust, Kannamangala, told Deccan Herald that the NHAI had created an unscientific U-turn at the Kannamangala Gate. “The turn should have been some distance away from the gate. A number of accidents occur near the gate due to the turn,” he said.

Venkatesh, general secretary of Taluk Raitha Sangha, Devanahalli, said about 18 accidents had occurred near the Kannamangala Gate over the past two weeks and five people had lost lives in the last 10 days.

“The residents of Kannamangala, Pujenahalli, Hilltore and Jogihalli, who go towards the international airport for construction work, should use the U-turn and move further. There is heavy traffic during peak hours and there is no traffic signal. All this has led to accidents,” Venkatesh alleged.

Hyderabad, MAY 28: A three-year-old boy who accidentally fell into a newly drilled open borewell in Telangana's Medak district was found dead in the early hours of Thursday, police said.

The kid's body was retrieved at around 4 am after a nearly 10 hours' long rescue operation involving different agencies, they said.

"He died a while before we evacuated him, most likely due to the mud that covered him from the top sealing off necessary oxygen supply, " Medak District Superintendent of Police Chandana Deepti told PTI.

The boy had accidentally slipped into the 120- feet borewell at around 5 pm on Wednesday in an agricultural field located in Papannapet mandal of the district when he was walking with his grandfather and father, police earlier said.

As part of rescue efforts, a parallel trench was dug along the borewell hole with the help of earth excavating machines and oxygen was supplied into it, but the efforts went in vain as the boy's body was found stuck at a depth of around 25 feet, the police said.

Apart from the police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel were also involved in the rescue operation.

The borewell into which the child fell was one among the three dug by the family since Tuesday night to try and find water for their fields. But none of them yielded any water, police had said.
