Bangalore, August 8: Parents of a 13-year-old rape victim in the City have been socially ostracised for refusing to marry their daughter off to the accused, so the case against him can be withdrawn.

Tormented by pressure from all quarters, the parents, Syed Kareem and Irshad Begum of Ramachandrapuram have written to the Karnataka High Court chief justice and the Karnataka State Commission of Protection of Child Rights, conveying their plight.

In their letter dated August 6, 2012, they urged the chief justice, the Lokayukta and the City police commissioner “to take cognisance of the complaint against the people responsible for our troubles.”

“They are pressurising us in one way or the other, hampering our day to day activities. No labourers are allowed to work in our shops. Though our daughter has been permitted to attend classes, she is being treated indifferently at school,” the letter read.

Apparently, even the civic authorities are adding to the family’s plight. The couple alleged that BBMP authorities are pressuring them to discontinue repair works at their house.

“They are preventing us from carrying out repair of our building. They said we can carry out the repairs only after we give in to the demand of the community,” the distraught parents said.

Holding certain members of the Ramachandrapuram Masjid Committee, who also happen to be relatives of the 23-year-old accused, Syed Shakeel, responsible for their plight, the couple said they were under tremendous pressure to withdraw the complaint against the accused.

“They have been demanding to marry our daughter to him, which is inhuman and impossible. We cannot welcome Shakeel into our family,” they stated in the letter.

“We are also facing continuous threats from several persons and fake organisations that are hand in glove with relatives of the accused.”

To make the matters worse, the police also seems to be in connivance with the accused as they refused to register a complaint, hence it had to be sent by post. Counsel for the complainants, Ramananda, told Deccan Herald that the family is even finding it difficult to get a birth certificate for the baby delivered by their daughter.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 10: The man who fled from the Medical College Hospital where he was undergoing treatment for COVID-19 committed suicide on Wednesday morning after being brought back. He used his bed sheet to hang himself from the ceiling.

Hailing from Anad near Nedumangadu, the man, who was undergoing treatment in the isolation room set up at KHRWS pay ward, escaped from the hospital and boarded two KSRTC buses to reach his home.

The Health Department had said the latest tests had returned negative and he was to be discharged on Wednesday. However, City Police Commissioner Balram Kumar Upadhyay had claimed that one more test result of the person was awaited.

The man was blocked by locals upon his arrival at Anad. He was later taken back to the hospital and the police had registered a case against him under the Kerala Public Health Act and Epidemic Diseases Ordinance.

Bareilly, May 31: The Bareilly couple who had made headlines in July last year when they eloped and apprehended a threat to their life from the girl's father who is a BJP MLA in UP, is back in the news.

Ajitesh, now son-in-law of BJP MLA Rajesh Mishra, and his friend were arrested on Saturday for allegedly thrashing a youth and snatching his cell phone after a minor road mishap in Prem Nagar area of Bareilly district.

Ajitesh is married to Sakshi, daughter of the MLA and the couple had eloped last year and got married.

According to police, the youth was on his way home after buying medicines for his friend's father when his bike hit Ajitesh's SUV. Ajitesh and his friend thrashed the youth and snatched his cell phone.

Police said Ajitesh and his friend Vaibhav Gangwar were booked under IPC section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) and other relevant sections.

Both have been sent to jail.

The complainant Deepanshu Maheshwari said, "When I overtook Ajitesh's car, he chased and waylaid me in the middle of the road. Thereafter, he and his friend thrashed me and snatched my phone. SHO Balbir Singh and his team rescued me."

The SHO told reporters, "We checked CCTV footage and spoke to witnesses only to find that Ajitesh and his friend had thrashed the youth. A case was registered under relevant sections and both were sent to jail after being produced before a magistrate on Saturday. The youth has been admitted to a hospital and his condition is stable."

The BJP MLA, incidentally, had snapped all his ties with his daughter Sakshi after she eloped and married Ajitesh.
