Bangalore, November 21: A 55-year-old realtor and RTI activist who once ran a Kannada weekly tabloid was hacked to death in front of his house in Vittalnagar, Chamarajpet, South Bangalore early on Tuesday morning.

Lingaraju Madaiah, former editor of the now-closed 'Maha Prachanda', was standing near the public water tap outside his house when a three-member gang attacked him with machetes and knives.

They repeatedly stabbed him and he died. His wife and two sons were fast asleep when the killing took place around 6 am, Chamarajpet police said.

Family members woke up hearing cries from passersby and shifted Lingaraju to Victoria Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

'Maha Prachanda' stopped publishing nearly five years back.

Meanwhile, family sources claimed that Lingaraju had filed a complaint with the Lokayukta against a city corporator sometime back. The Lokayukta recently raided the councillor and seized valuables.

But Chamarajpet police refused to confirm the allegations. "It is true that the family is alleging the involvement of the corporator. We will come to know the truth only when we arrest the real culprits," the police said.

Lingaraju also filed RTI queries pertaining to projects of big builders.

Mumbai, May 10: A 32-year old man, running a bakery here has been arrested for alleged promotion of products using a tagline that said his firm does not employ Muslims, police said on Sunday.

The man, who is also selling his products online had allegedly said "made by Jains on orders, no Muslim staff" for promotion purposes in his WhatApp group.

A complaint was lodged against him saying the words depicted Muslims in a bad light and Mambalam police registered a case and arrested him, a release said adding a probe was on.

Recently, a man was arrested in Mumbai after he allegedly refused to collect groceries he had ordered online since the delivery person was a Muslim.

Noida, Jul 28: A doctor admitted at a private hospital in Noida has been accused of sexually harassing a patient in his isolation ward, where both were undergoing treatment for COVID-19, the police said.

The 20-year-old woman, in her complaint to the police, alleged that the incident took place on Monday and based on that a case was filed at the local expressway police station, they said.

A senior police official said an investigation is underway and there might be lapses on part of the hospital which allegedly admitted a man and a woman in the same isolation ward, in violation of the norms.

The woman and the doctor had tested positive for coronavirus last week, according to officials.

"The woman was in the isolation ward of the private hospital. There was a man, a medical practitioner, who too was infected with coronavirus and was sharing the ward with her," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Noida, Ranvijay Singh said.

He said the woman alleged molestation and upon being informed, the police immediately lodged a case and initiated a probe into the matter.

"There appears to be some irresponsibility on part of the hospital too. We are communication with the medical departments to check whether the patients were being kept in accordance with the guidelines," Mr Singh said.

He said the accused is still in isolation but the police will reach out for his statement following due protocols of COVID-19.

"All necessary action will be taken as per the truth that will emerge after a thorough investigation," Mr Singh said.

Hyderabad, Mar 28: Seven labourers from Karnataka were killed and four injured when the van in which they were travelling was hit by a truck near Pedda Golconda on the outskirts of the city late on Friday night, police said.

The deceased included two children. Of the 31 workers in the van, five died on the spot and two while undergoing treatment at a hospital, Assistant Commissioner of Traffic Vishwa Prasad said.
Four others were hospitalised and the condition of one of them is critical, he said, adding the other workers in the van escaped with minor injuries.

The workers were on their way back to their home town Raichur in Karnataka as the road project they were working in at Suryapet here was stalled due to the lockdown, Prasad said.

He said initital investigations revealed that the mango laden truck, which was on its way to Gujarat, was overspeeding.
