Dubai, Feb 14: The father of 8-year-old Wadeema, the little girl who was tortured to death by his father and buried in the desert, has been sentenced to death while the father’s girlfriend was given life sentence by the Dubai Court of First Instance.

The court announced the verdict today. The verdict is subject to appeal within 15 days at the Court of Appeal.

The Emirati father, HS, will be executed by a firing squad.

The duo tortured and burnt Wadeema and her sister Mira with irons and cigarettes, besides pouring boiling water on them, beating them and using a stun gun on them.

Wadeema succumbed to her injuries while her younger sister Mira survived.

The father and his mistress were arrested following a visit of the girl’s uncle to their house. He reported that Wadeema was missing and the younger one Mira’s condition was bad.wadeema

Police estimated from the decomposed body of Wadeema that she had died over six months ago. The father and his mistress were accused of torturing the two girls with different tools and burning their bodies with irons and confining them for long hours without food in the bathroom or in the wardrobe causing the death of one and 10 per cent permanent disability for the other.

Earlier, during a hearing, the father had jumped from the dock and assaulted a policeman while making his testimony.

Policemen and anti-riot staff in Courtroom No 4 brought HSJ, 29, under control and stopped him from reaching the policeman who was making his testimony in the case.

The witness was standing in front of Presiding Judge Maher Salama Al Mahdi and was asked why the accused and his mistress used to lock the two girls in the bathroom.

“They did that whenever they wanted to have sex,” the witness answered the judge. The accused jumped from the dock rushing towards the witness, shouting, “Why you are saying that, you are lying, this is a lie.”

The Court’s anti-riot staff and policemen guarding the court room overpowered the accused before he could reach the witness. Presiding Judge Salama ordered the accused to be taken back to the detention centre.

The prosecution had asked the court for the death penalty for the accused.

Recently, a new law was announced by UAE authorities aimed at protecting the rights of children and all relevant areas to ensure a safe and stable life for them and protect them from abuse and neglect, be it physical, emotional, social or moral.

The draft law will apply to all children in the UAE.

The law has been named Wadeema’s Law as a tribute to eight-year-old Wadeema.

The West Bengal government has suspended two women teachers in East Burdwan district on the charge of teaching pre-primary students from an English alphabet book consisting of a portion derogatory to the people with a dark complexion.

While presenting the alphabets with corresponding words and images, the book says U is for "Ugly". The illustration printed beside the letter is that of a boy with a dark complexion.

"The book is not part of the textbooks referred by the education department. It was introduced by the school itself. We have zero-tolerance for acts which instil prejudices into the minds of students," Education Minister Partha Chatterjee told reporters here on Thursday.

He said the two teachers of a local municipality-run school have been placed under suspension with immediate effect based on a preliminary investigation and stricter action would be taken against them later.

Though the school is now closed because of the lockdown, the matter came to light when the father of a student of the school was teaching him with the help of that book. He informed other parents and the education department was apprised of the issue, sources said.

Jun 25: A 16-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide at her house in east Delhi and her family members secretly buried her body, which was later exhumed for post-mortem, police said on Wednesday.

The girl, whose family hails from Jharkhand, allegedly hanged herself in a room in her house on Monday, they said.

No suicide note was recovered from the spot, police said.

Her body was exhumed on Tuesday as per the directions of the Sub Divisional Magistrate of the area. The process was carried out as her family members secretly buried her without informing the police.

The post-mortem will be conducted after Covid-19 tests, police said.

The incident took place on Monday. The reason behind her taking the extreme step is yet to be ascertained, they said.

Police said the girl lived with her mother and two siblings. The family hails from Jharkhand and are financially extremely weak. Her father died two years ago, they said.

After the father’s death, the girl's mother along with her siblings took her body to a burial ground and buried her, police said.

The police said the matter came to their notice after a neighbour alerted them about it. Following the information the body was exhumed, they said.

On questioning the girl's mother, she told police that she didn't know that one has to inform police in a suicide case, a senior police officer said.

Inquest proceedings have been initiated, police said.
