Shimla, May 6: Alleged dowry death of a 28-year-old woman in Vantungli village of Kangra district has left the deceased's in-laws as well as her family in trouble. While her husband and mother-in-law have been arrested, police also booked the blood relatives for performing her last rites in front of the in-laws' house on Friday.

"Cremating the body in front of a house is against the law and we have registered a case against the relatives of the deceased woman. We had video-graphed the cremation and people captured in the video would face action now," said Jawali police station SHO Haripal Saini.

According to the relatives of deceased woman Neelam, her husband had beaten her to death on May 29 as she could not fulfill their demand for dowry. She was taken to Haripur hospital on May 1 from where she was referred to Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College in Tanda where she died on May 2.

After receiving a complaint from the family members of the deceased woman, cops got a postmortem conducted and later handed over the body to her relatives and also arrested the husband and mother-in-law. But instead of taking the body to the cremation ground, they cremated the body right in front of her in-laws' house.

Neelam got married to Lekhraj some 10 years back and they have three sons. While the aggrieved relatives of Neelam are blaming the alleged brutal beating of her husband for the death, the relatives of Lekhraj on their part lodged a police complaint for cremating the body right in front of their house. Cross FIRs under different sections of IPC were registered at Jawali police station.
