Mangaluru, Oct 25: The Karnataka high court on Tuesdayacquitted Mohan Kumar alias Cyanide Mohan in the rape and murder of 32-year-old Leelavati Mistry, a resident of Vamapadavu in Bantwal taluk, who was found dead at a KSRTC bus stand in Mysuru in September 2005.

A division bench comprising Justice Ravi Malimath and John Michael Cunha noted that both the postmortem and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) reports only established the presence of organophosporous (insecticide), and the 'last seen' theory was not proved by the prosecution.

Partly allowing a criminal appeal filed by Mohan, the bench, however, upheld the trial court's order holding him guilty under section 392 of IPC (robbery), for which a five-year jail term was imposed.

However, the same was set off as Mohan had already spent seven years in jail since his arrest in July 2009.

On October 12, the court had commuted Mohan's death penalty to life sentence in the murder of 22-year-old Anitha who was found dead at a KSRTC bus stand in Hassan on June 18, 2009.

The third case in which Mohan was awarded the death penalty - the murder of Sunanda Pujari - will be taken up on October 31.

Took her to Mysuru on pretext of job interview. Leelavati was found dead in the urinal at the Mysuru bus stand on September 10, 2005.

The prosecution had alleged that Mohan befriended Leelavati in August 2005 claiming that he belonged to her caste and would marry her. On September 9, 2005, he took her to Mysuru from Bantwal on the pretext of an job interview.

He booked a room at a lodge and the duo checked in. Later, he allegedly raped her.

The next morning, he asked her to remove her ornaments and keep them in her bag to give the interviewers the impression that she belonged to a poor family.

He also gave her a pill laced with cyanide, claiming it was an 'anti-pregnancy medicine' and asked her to consume it in the lavatory. Then he checked out of the lodge and decamped with her jewellery.

On December 21, 2013, the IV additional sessions judge, Dakshina Kannada district, had awarded death penalty to Mohan in connection with the murders of Anitha, Leelavati and Sunanda.

Bengaluru, Jun 30: In an attempt to tackle unemployment amidst covid-19 crisis, the Karnataka state government has launched a job portal connecting employers and job seekers.

The portal, 'Skill connect' ( https://skillconnect.kaushalkar.com/ ) provides region-wise and sector-wise job listings. An interested candidate can register on the portal and either apply for jobs or can also seek skill training.

As on Monday, the portal has 25 registered companies with over 2000 jobs available in various sectors.

The portal works more or less on similar lines as that of any private job portal, except that those posting jobs and candidates searching for employment will have to register with the Skill Development Department.

Launching the portal on Monday, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa hoped that the portal would provide an impetus to job creation, as well as the economic revival of the state.

Deputy Chief Minister Dr. C.N. Ashwath Narayan who is also the skill development Minister added, "All these years, there was no information and communication between job seekers and recruiters. This portal will solve that problem."

Also, until now, there hasn't been comprehensive information either on those seeking jobs or those looking for employees. The skill development efforts have not been in sync with the market. All these issues would be addressed by the portal, he said.

According to Karnataka Skill Development Authority Managing Director Ashwin Gowda, the portal has already seen a response with about 68 applicants in just a day.

Officials said even the organisations will have to register with the government while providing all documents concerned. The government aims to avoid any fake job advertisements through this. "We will also enable virtual interviews between the candidate and the employer," sources in the department told DH.

Recently, the government had also launched a portal exclusively for migrants who had returned to Karnataka from other places. This was meant to work as a skill registry.

However, the portal that was launched on Monday, went a step ahead by connecting both the prospective employers and employees, according to officials in the department.

Bengaluru, May 3: The Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare Services in the government of Karnataka KA Dayanand issued an order approving quarantine of asymptomatic COVID-19 infected international passengers on payment basis at star hotels.

The international passengers in the state have been categorised into A, B and C groups depending on their symptoms and co-morbid conditions. Category A passengers are symptomatic and are being sent to isolation hospitals which may be COVID care centres.

Category B and C passengers are asymptomatic and are being sent to institutional facilities like hostels, guest houses, hotels, etc.

"On the basis of demands by category B and C passengers to provide them star hotel accommodation on a self-payment basis, they have been granted the choice of staying in those hotels at their own cost. The BBMP Special Commissioner/Deputy Commissioner can have a meeting with such hotels and finalise the negotiated rate," Commissioner Dayanand said in the order.

"The hotels for category B passengers should have round the clock presence of health personnel while hotels for category C passengers should be visited by health staff once a day," he added.
