Mangaluru, Feb 25: The sixth Additional District and Sessions Judge D.T. Puttarangaswamy here on Saturday sentenced to life “Cyanide” Mohan Kumar on finding him guilty of murdering a 28-year-old woman by administering cyanide to her.

As per the charge-sheet, Mohan Kumar introduced himself as Shashidhar Poojary to the 28-year-old woman, a resident of Belthangady taluk in Dakshina Kannada. He promised to marry her and took the woman to a lodge in Hassan on September 23, 2009.

The next day, he asked her to remove her jewellery in the room and sent her to a public toilet at the bus stand nearby to consume pregnancy prevention pill. The woman went to the toilet and consumed the pill given by Mohan Kumar. However, the pill contained cyanide.

While the woman died in the bus stand, Mohan Kumar vacated the room and left the place with her jewellery. He sold the jewellery to some jewellers in Mangaluru, the charge-sheet said.

Prosecutor Judith O.M. Crasta examined 38 witnesses, including the lodge owner, the person who had sold cyanide to Mohan Kumar and the jewellers who purchased the jewellery.

The judge sentenced Mohan Kumar to death and imposed a fine of Rs. 3,000 on him for an offence under Section 302 (murder) of Indian Penal Code (IPC). He was sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs. 3,000 for an offence under Section 376 (rape) of IPC, six years imprisonment and Rs. 3,000 fine for an offence under Section 366 (kidnapping) of IPC, seven years imprisonment and Rs. 3,000 fine for an offence under Section 328 (administering stupefying drugs) of IPC, five years imprisonment and Rs. 3,000 fine for an offence under Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of IPC, five years imprisonment and Rs. 3,000 fine for an offence under Section 392 (robbery) of IPC and five months imprisonment for an offence under Section 417 (cheating) of IPC. All these sentences will run concurrently, the judge said.

Mohan Kumar, a former teacher, has been charge-sheeted by police in 20 cases of murder of women by using cyanide. Including the murder of the 28-year-old woman, he has been convicted in five cases.

The District Sessions Court has already sentenced him to death for the murder of a woman from Sullia on February 12, 2008, which was upheld by the High Court of Karnataka on November 15, 2017.

The High Court, however, overturned the death sentence awarded by the District Sessions Court and awarded life sentence to Mohan Kumar for the murder of two more women.

While acquitting Mohan Kumar in the murder of a 32-year-old woman from Bantwal, the High Court had sentenced him to five years imprisonment on finding him guilty of robbing her of her jewellery.

Also, the District Sessions Court had sentenced him to life for the murder of a woman from Puttur.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Monday said he would not get involved in any 'wicked act' of bringing down the B S Yediyurappa-led government in Karnataka, amid claims that 15 to 20 BJP MLAs were ready to come out.

Clarifying that he would not disturb the government, the former Chief Minister said for him, the development of the state was important. "With great difficulty, you (Yediyurappa) have become Chief Minister for the fourth time, (I am) happy, I have nowhere said that I will disturb your government. Even now some people come and ask why I'm sitting silent when 15-20 people are ready to come out of BJP and why don't I make an attempt (to poach them), Kumaraswamy said. Speaking to reporters in Hassan, he sought to know why he should get entangled in that 'sludge' and he was not in a hurry.

"I will not get involved in a wicked act of removing a responsible government like Yediyurappa did. For me the development of the state is important," he said.

Though Kumaraswamy had raised questions about the longevity of the BJP government ahead of the December 5 bypolls, he had even then given clear indications that he would not attempt to pull down the administration as it would affect the development of the state.

The ruling BJP had swept the by-elections by winning 12 of the total 15 seats, helping the Yediyurappa government retain the majority in the Assembly.

With BJP winning 12 of the 15 assembly constituencies, it's numbers went up from 105 (including an independent) to 117, which is well ahead of the halfway mark of 111 in a 223-member Assembly (two seats-- Maski and R R Nagar-- are vacant due to pending litigation in the High Court).

The BJP came to power after the Kumaraswamy-led Congress-JD(S) coalition government collapsed as 17 MLAs had rebelled against the alliance leadership and resigned as legislators, to later favour the saffron party.

The state has reported 6,245 COVID-19 cases including 2,977 cured, 3,196 active cases and 72 deaths.

Bengaluru, Apr 27: Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Monday demanded that the Karnataka government announce a special package for farmers who are on the verge of quitting agriculture as their profession following losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Please announce special package for the farmers to bail them out of the loss due to the lockdown.

Drop many of the schemes in the budget but don't leave the farmers in distress," Gowda said in his letter to Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa.

The JD(S) supremo said the way relief has been announced for the milk producers by procuring the unsold milk and distributing it to the slum dwellers, the same assistance should be provided to the farmers of the state.

"If you don't come forward to assist the farmers, then they will be forced to sell their land," Gowda cautioned the Chief Minister.

The former prime minister said the farmers are on the verge of falling in the debt trap and may be compelled to take the extreme step of suicide due to the losses.

Gowda said the farmers are unable to sell their crop because they are not getting proper price for their produce and are selling their crop at a throwaway price to minimise their losses.

"In just one month farmers reached the brink of bankruptcy as they are unable to sell the standing crops in lakhs of acres of land," Gowda said.

The JD(S) supremo has been championing the cause of farmers in the state and highlighting their sufferings.

On April 3 Gowda has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to look into the plight of farmers, labourers and the middle class people due to the lockdown.

"In such times of crisis, we should see to it that there is no disruption in farming activities by ensuring proper marketing channels to agricultural produce, especially perishables.

Only then we can sustain our long battle against this pandemic," Gowda said in a tweet.
