Dakshina Kannada to be smoke-free district within a month: Nalin Kumar Kateel

Bantwal, Jan 26: Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel has said that the coastal district will be made smoke-free within a month.

He was speaking at the mass convention of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries and distribution of cooking gas connections to beneficiaries under the Extended Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (EPMUY) – II at BC Road.

Hhe said all below poverty line (BPL) families who have not been covered under the Phase I of PMUY will be provided with gas connections now.

Mr. Kateel said that Harish Poonja, MLA, Belthangady, has promised that Belthangady taluk will be made smoke-free within 10 days. All other MLAs are committed to ensure that all remaining BPL families in their constituencies are provided with gas connections within a month.

Ramesh Jigajinagi, Union Minister of State for Drinking Water and Sanitation, handed over cooking gas connections symbolically to 34 beneficiaries under EPMUY– II on the occasion. The Minister said that the yojana has removed smoke from the kitchens of the poor households in the country by providing them accessibility to clean cooking fuel of liquefied petroleum gas and making it one of the largest social inclusion.

Pralhad V. Joshi, MP and chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas, said the PMUY is aimed at making the country smoke-free.

Thangavel S., Regional LPG Manager, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. spoke. Amba Bhavani, zonal head, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd., K. Shailendra, Chief General Manager, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., were present.

Mangaluru, Apr 24: The last rites of the elderly woman who died of covid-19 yesterday was finally held in the wee hours of Friday amidst tight security at Kaikunje Hindu Rudra Bhoomi near BC Road bus stand in spite of severe opposition from the members of the own community.

The funeral was held as per the protocol for COVID-19 deaths, police said.

Prior to this hundreds of Hindus had staged a protest  last night in front of Pachanady Hindu Rudra Bhoomi near Vamanjoor following reports that the the 77-year-old coronavirus positive woman's mortal remains will be cremated there.

Mangaluru North MLA Bharat Shetty rushed to the spot and convinced the protesters that he will not allow the authorities to cremate the body at Pachanady. Hence, the authorities shifted the cremation venue, it is learnt. 

Meanwhile, many local residents staged protest at Pachanady against the cremation of the dead body of a coronavirus positive woman. Hence, additional police force was sent from Mangaluru to disperse the crowd and facilitate the last rite.

According to sources, initially the authorities had  planned to cremate body at Baddakatte Hindu Rudra Bhoomi near here native place in Bantwal. However, the locals and the community elders had forced the authorities to change the plan.

Such protests due to misconception about the spread of coronavirus had been witnessed in some other parts of the country, including in Chennai, and the governments have warned of action against those opposing cremation or burial of COVID-19 patients.

So far as many as 17 covid-19 postive cases have been reported in Dakshina Kannada including two deaths from same family from Bantwal's Kasba village.

Mangaluru, Jan 23: Bajpe Police on Thursday registered yet another case against the prime accused in Mangaluru International Airport case, Aditya Rao.

According to the police, a complaint was received from the officials of Indigo flight that they had to delay their flight scheduled to take off for Hyderabad at 1615 hrs after receiving a hoax call from Aditya, threatening of bomb.

They also asserted that the passengers were de-boarded from the flight and the luggages were brought back to security check again.

Hassan, Mar 14: Karnataka Health Department officials took help of the Police to get a man, who returned from pilgrimage to Mecca (Saudi Arabia), admitted to hospital as he refused to undergo clinical tests for suspected Coronavirus, official sources said on Saturday.

According to the sources, a family from Arkalgud taluk, who was on a pilgrimage to Mecca and Madina, returned on March 5 and the woman from the family developed fever and symptoms of flu.

On Friday evening, in view of the Coronavirus scare, a team of Health Department officials visited their house and directed them to get admitted to a hospital in Hassan for treatment.
