Dalit woman delivers baby in hospital's toilets

Malappuram, Jan 1: In a shocking incident of medical apathy, a Dalit woman delivered a baby in the toilet of a medical college here after a nurse sent her to relieve herself instead of taking her complaint of pain seriously, her family said on Saturday.child

According to close relatives of the woman, admitted to the Manjeri Medical College and Hospital here, the staff displayed an "indifferent attitude" towards them.

When she complained of severe pain, a nurse insisted that she needed to urinate to reduce the pain, said a close relative.

"She went to the toilet. She could not sit and cried out in pain. An attendant rushed to the toilet and took the baby out," said the relative.

The mother and the baby were later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy expressed shock over the incident, while State Health Minister K.K.Shailaja told the media that the Malappuram district medical officer has been ordered to submit a report on the incident and action will be taken for any lapses.

Kasaragod, Feb 5: The customs officials has confiscated 15.5 kilograms gold from a car at Bekal near here on Wednesday.

Sources said, acting on a tip-off, the customs sleuths intercepted a car at Bekal, and seized the yellow metal which is being smuggled by the occupants into Kerala.

The police also managed to arrest the two youth identified as Khetan (29) and Akash (23), both natives of Maharashtra. They had hidden the gold in the cushion. 

The accused confessed that the gold was being transported from Thalassery to Maharashtra illegally. The custom officials are investigating to find others involved in the case.

Bengaluru, Apr 1: After fake sanitisers and masks, Central Crime Branch (CCB) police have busted another racket and seized fake thermometers worth Rs 8 lakh, it said in a statement on Wednesday.

Based on credible information, police conducted the raid on Prajval Surgical and Scientific store located on the first floor of a commercial building in the first block, Rajajinagar. They arrested store manager Keshavan N, 32, a resident of Kurubarahalli.

The police have seized 70 fake infrared forehead thermometers and 60 batteries used in these thermometers. They were worth around Rs 8 lakh as per the price they charged customers for each thermometer.

Mangaluru, Apr 26: City Police Commissioner P S Harsha on Sunday said that the news about the implementation of seal down in some wards of Mangaluru city is fake and urged the public not to pay any heed to it.

Taking to twitter, Mr Harsha wrote, ''Some miscreants are floating some old speculative…TV news reports of seal down in some wards of Mangaluru city. It’s fake news.....Don’t Heed to fake news.''
