Dalit woman delivers baby in hospital's toilets

Malappuram, Jan 1: In a shocking incident of medical apathy, a Dalit woman delivered a baby in the toilet of a medical college here after a nurse sent her to relieve herself instead of taking her complaint of pain seriously, her family said on Saturday.child

According to close relatives of the woman, admitted to the Manjeri Medical College and Hospital here, the staff displayed an "indifferent attitude" towards them.

When she complained of severe pain, a nurse insisted that she needed to urinate to reduce the pain, said a close relative.

"She went to the toilet. She could not sit and cried out in pain. An attendant rushed to the toilet and took the baby out," said the relative.

The mother and the baby were later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy expressed shock over the incident, while State Health Minister K.K.Shailaja told the media that the Malappuram district medical officer has been ordered to submit a report on the incident and action will be taken for any lapses.

Mangaluru, Mar 26: About 2,771 people are home-quarantined in the wake of the novel coronavirus in Dakshina Kannada district here, Deputy Commissioner said on Wednesday.

"Meanwhile, about 20 people have completed the mandated 28 days of quarantine, DC Sindhu B Rupesh said in a statement here.

More than 38,000 people from the district have been screened and seven are admitted and are under observation, he added.

Udupi, Jun 1: As many as 73 people have been tested positive for coronavirus in Udupi district today.

The district has registered a total of 260 positive cases so far. Majority of the positive cases in Udupi district have inter-state travel history to Maharashtra.

Mangaluru, Mar 10: Tension prevailed in the city after an international flyer quarantined at the District Wenlock Hospital walked out of the facility.

The passenger, with a recent travel history to high-risk countries, refused to cooperate with health officials. The day-long drama ended when the district administration intervened and the flyer agreed to get himself re-admitted.

Deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh said the passenger had fever and was sent to an isolation ward. “The passenger is cooperating with the treatment and samples have been collected for testing,” she said. The samples will be sent to a testing centre in Bengaluru.

Sources told  that rude behaviour by staff at Mangalore International Airport may have angered the passenger and he walked out of the quarantine facility.

She said if passengers show reluctance to be screened, they should first be counselled and allowed to get themselves admitted to a hospital of their choice with quarantine facility. If they still refuse to cooperate, they will have to be hospitalised forcefully, she added.
