Dalit woman delivers baby in hospital's toilets

Malappuram, Jan 1: In a shocking incident of medical apathy, a Dalit woman delivered a baby in the toilet of a medical college here after a nurse sent her to relieve herself instead of taking her complaint of pain seriously, her family said on Saturday.child

According to close relatives of the woman, admitted to the Manjeri Medical College and Hospital here, the staff displayed an "indifferent attitude" towards them.

When she complained of severe pain, a nurse insisted that she needed to urinate to reduce the pain, said a close relative.

"She went to the toilet. She could not sit and cried out in pain. An attendant rushed to the toilet and took the baby out," said the relative.

The mother and the baby were later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy expressed shock over the incident, while State Health Minister K.K.Shailaja told the media that the Malappuram district medical officer has been ordered to submit a report on the incident and action will be taken for any lapses.

Belagavi, Mar 13: Former Karnataka Minister and Senior Congress leader H K Patil on Thursday alleged that the ruling BJP government headed by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has shown negligence towards completion of the irrigation projects in North-Karnataka region.

Mr. Patil said that no sufficient provision was made in the Budget for 2020-21 presented by Yediyurappa on March 5.

North Karnataka region people, farmers, and leaders expected more fund allocation to complete the pending and ongoing irrigation projects, but they are disappointed.

Bantwal, Jun 5: A very rare white python, which had entered a house at Kavalakatte in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada, was caught by snake catcher Snake Kiran on Friday handed over to the authorities of Pilikula Nisargadhama.

This extremely rare white coloured python known as Albino was seen in the house of one Naushad.

The occupants of the house as well as residents of the area were panicky over seeing it. 

Later a friend of Naushad informed Snake Kiran who caught it and handed over to the care of Pilikula as per the advice of forest officer Sridhar.

Kasaragod, Jun 2: Kumbala police on Tuesday arrested 20 persons on charges of misbehaving and obstructing a medical team who were on official duty for Covid-19.

Police sources said the incident occurred at Kumbala beach near here on Monday evening when a group of locals misbehaved and obstructed an eight-member medical team, comprising of doctors and health workers, from carrying out a survey to asertain whether there has been a community spread of Covid-19 in that locality.

The health team was on a mission to gather data of people who had interacted with expatriates after they had returned to hometown recently.
