Mangaluru, Jun 28: In an attack that prima facie seemed motivated by unrequited love, a 20-year-old post-graduation student, was brutally stabbed repeatedly by her 28-year-old friend-turned-harasser at Bagambila near Deralakatte on the outskirts of the city in broad daylight on Friday.

The victim is Deeksha (20), a resident of Bagambila, and a student of MBA at a private college at Karkala. Her condition is said to be extremely critical. The accused, Sushanth (28), hailing near Rama Shakti Mission in Shaktinagar, Mangaluru, is also undergoing treatment after his suicide bid.

A video recording of the incident, captured by a resident in the vicinity, has gone viral, shocking people across the state. While several people are heard shouting at the attacker asking him to stop and some even try to approach him, the man is seen slitting his own neck and threatening passersby to stay away when they try to intervene.

With a preliminary investigation underway, Mangaluru DCP (Law and Order) said it appeared to be a case of unrequited love, with the victim not responding to the accused's overtures. A case was registered in Ullal police station.

The incident

Deeksha, who was apparently returning from college had as usual, alighted at KSHEMA bus stand at Deralakatte around 4.30 pm and was walking towards home located behind the hospital when Sushanth who came from behind in a scooter suddenly attacked her with a knife. When the locals tried to stop him, he tried to end his own life.

The girl collapsed on the road after she was stabbed multiple times. The local residents and hospital staff raised an alarm. Some of them picked up sticks to threaten the stabber. However he threatened them by flashing his knife and then continued to stab the girl who had fallen down. Then he suddenly sliced his throat and fell on Deeksha and rolled over her. It is said that girl was stabbed around a dozen times.

The accused, who is a dancer by profession, knew Deeksha knew Deeksha for last few years and was in love with her. Deeksha too was practicing dancing and was close with him. However, for last few months she had started avoiding the Sushant.

After she joined MBA in Karkala, he had gone there and reportedly harassed her. A complaint was registered relating to this incident there.
