Datta Jayanti: Saffron clad bhakts resort to violence at Bababudangiri

Chikkamagaluru, Dec 3: Incidents of stone pelting, assault and vandalism were reported from Chikkamagaluron Sunday when hundreds of saffron activists wearing Dattamala mala, visited Inam Dattatreya Peeta atBababudangiri to have the darshan of the Datta Paduke on the occasion of Datta Jayanti.

 Tension prevailed for some time at the Datta Peeta as a few bhakts jumped into the restricted area and placed a 'Bhagawadwaja' while another bhakt tore an old green flag.

 The police rushed to the spot and pulled them out of the restricted area. This led to chaos at the site. In the melee, all the barricades placed at the site were brought down by the saffron activists. They also ransacked the name boards placed at the tombs in the restricted area of Datta peeta.

 A few of the bhakts had sneaked saffron shawl into the restricted area as well. Chikkamagalur SP K Annamalai and his staff brought the situation under control.

 In the evening, some unidentified miscreants pelted stones at a private bus. Two persons riding a two-wheeler were assaulted by miscreants at Uppalli. The police said the situation is under control. There was a bandh-like atmosphere in Chikkamagaluru town.

 The bhakts carrying "Irumudi" left for the Datta Peeta in the morning after having bath at the Honnammana halla. They stood in a queue for more than two-and-a-half kilometre from the main entrance to have the darshan of the paduke. Ganapathi homa, Datta homa, havana, pooja for Anasooya Devi, Athri Muni and Guru Dattatreya statues were performed.

 There was traffic congestion over a three-kilometre stretch from the Datta Peeta. The police had tough time managing the traffic. The police had heightened security at the site. As a precautionary measure, the district administration had closed down all the shops and business establishments.

Bengaluru, Mar 23: Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramalu on Monday confirmed that there are 27 positive coronavirus cases in the state so far.

A fresh COVID-19 positive case has been reported from Mysore today.

"One hospital in every district is dedicated to COVID-19 treatment. We have placed an order for 1000 ventilators. We have also ordered 10 lakh N90 mask, five lakh PPE testing kits, 15 lakh three-layer masks. Sanitizers and thermal scanners will also be purchased on-demand," said Sriramalu while addressing a press conference here.

The Karnataka Health Minister said that decision will also be taken to purchase lab testing kits and equipment.

Meanwhile, Dr Ashwath Marayan, Deputy Chief Minister, Karnataka said that all necessary measures are being taken to contain the spread of COVID-19.

"We will take important decisions as soon as possible. 80 per cent of the companies are following work from home. Critical and essential things should be provided in this situation and we have kept them available to serve the people," said Marayan.

"We have taken all the required decisions including the logistics and supply. Social distancing is much important and we will implement it," he added.

The total number of positive coronavirus cases in the country mounts at 415, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Mangaluru, Jun 10: A youth, who staged suicide drama at Netravati River Bridge near Thokkottu on the outskirts of the city, reportedly found alive in Shivamogga today.

Praveen Saphalya a 28-year-old man from Kurnad village in Bantwal taluk was missing since yesterday. His motorbike was found abandoned on the Netravati bridge at around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday (June 9).

It was suspected that he had committed suicide by jumping off the bridge. Hence, police and fire fighters had launched a search operation for his body in the river with the help of divers on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, the missing person reportedly surfaced in Shivamogga this morning.

According to sources, Saphalya was working as salesman for SLRK Limited, is reportedly deep in debt. Unable to face the harassment of his creditors, he had parked the bike on the bridge and left the city, sources said. Local police are probing the matter.

Belagavi, Jun 6: Suspecting that cow meat was being transported to Goa, unidentified persons set goods vehicle on fire near Karle village in Belagavi taluk last night.

The Incident came to the fore on Saturday morning.

Usually, vehicles carrying vegetables, milk and other essentials being transported to Goa and other towns plying via Karle village near Belagavi.

Sources said that for the past few days vehicles carrying meat were stopped and were handed over to police by section of activists suspecting it to be cow meat.

Persons who set the vehicle on fire were yet to be identified. Jurisdictional Belagavi Rural police have rushed to the spot. More details were awaited.
