Chikkamagaluru, Dec 5: Dozens of people have been arrested by the Chikkamagaluru district police in connection with violence during Datta Jayanti celebrations at Bababudangiri, said Superintendent of Police K Annamalai.
Briefing media persons on Monday, he said that 34 persons had been arrested and two vehicles had been seized following an incident reported at Inam Dattatreya Peeta Bababudangiri Swamy Dargah on Sunday.
He said following a complaint from Mechanic Annappa that a few members of a particular community had pelted stones while he was walking on KM Road, the police had arrested 19 persons, of whom four were minors.
In connection with an assault reported at Uppalli, the police have arrested three persons.
Following a complaint registered by auto driver Wajid that a few members of another community had assaulted him while he was returning home from Dattapeeta, the police have arrested 15 persons and seized a few vehicles.
The police have filed a suo motu case for trying to ransack the name board of tombs on the Dattapeeta premises.
The SP said that a few youths, on December 3, hurled stones at police when they were on duty. During search operations, the police unearthed petrol bombs. The police have taken 15 persons into custody in this regard.
