Mangaluru, Jun 17: In an age where most social media networks engage its users addictively without remuneration for the time spent, a one year old blockchain and cryptocurrency based social networking site rewards their users to use it. ‘Steemit.com’ encourages it’s users to use its platform and by way of upvotes monetize their writing in the form of Steemit’s own internet currencies; Steem and SBD. These cryptocurrencies are similar to the popular Bitcoin, often known as internet gold.

Just as how Facebook and Twitter attracts likes, shares and retweets which has restricted reach; Steemit has upvotes and that is accessible to all. The community upvotes each other and this rewards the author (user) for the posts they make. Apart from making this platform free for all to join and use, it also manages to reward every author for every post or comment that is upvoted. The site also has the concept of curation rewards to reward voters for curating good quality content. Moreover, all the articles are categorized under tags making it reader friendly.

In the dawn of this new age social media craze, a team of 15 young and zestful keyboard enthusiasts have come forward from Mangalore to be a part of Steemit following the initiative of pro-blogger Meghan Naik. The rainy Sunday morning of 11 June witnessed the Steemit meet by this group consisting of bikers, photographers and sportspersons as they pledged to start exercising their flair for writing and get paid for it as well.

A briefing on this matter conducted by one of the first Indians on Steemit platform, Meghan Naik, who organized and educated the gathering about Steemit.co. He explained how to use the platform, how the incentives work, tips to make the most of this new technology and use of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin in the Indian scenario were disseminated to the gathering.

“I came across this platform a year ago and invested my time, and effort in writing content, building a global community for Steemit, helping many users use of this new platform to their benefit. Unlike the other social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram or Twitter which makes money off it’s users by way of advertising to them, Steemit rewards it’s users for their attention, effort and engaging on its platform”, Meghan said and added, “Your attention, effort and time is definitely worth a reward and Steemit makes it worthwhile to use it over any other social media platform. Even a dollar earned through participation on Steemit is worth more than zero earned when updating your status on Facebook.”
It is but a blogger’s dream to monetize their blogs at day one and Steemit helps them achieve this instantly with exception engagement with the target audience. As was written in one of Meghan’s blog (www.Steemit.com/@firepower), it is wise to spend more time on Steemit and engage more with users across the world. When you are an established author you could even consider sharing content on Steemit full-time as Meghan Naik currently does!

More technical information: Steemit.com is a platform which provides a unique solution to monetize content. It is a social network which empowers the community to award content it finds valuable. The awards are in the digital currency STEEM, and it’s proportionately allocated based upon weighted upvotes earned from the community. Contrasting Steemit against traditional social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, outstanding content will attract likes, reposts and attention on traditional social media platforms, but no monetary reward. However, on Steemit, every like (in the form of an upvote) is a vote to award some digital currency STEEM to the content creator – more upvotes equal a greater allocation of STEEM from the reward pool.

New Delhi, April 5: Former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to offer a "credible scientific and rational" explanation for his candle-lighting call and said he is giving "meaningless tasks" to an already exhausted population.

The JD(S) leader questioned if the Prime Minister asked the nation to observe a candle-light vigil on the eve of foundation day of BJP.

"Has the PM slyly asked the nation to observe a candle light vigil on the eve of foundation day of BJP? April 6 being its foundation day, what else can explain the choice of date & time for this event? I challenge the PM to offer a credible scientific and rational explanation," Kumaraswamy tweeted.

"The government is yet to provide PPEs for doctors and make test kits affordable for the common man. Without telling the nation what concrete steps are being taken to combat COVID-19 menace, the prime minister is giving meaningless tasks to an already exhausted population," he tweeted.

"It is shameful to convert the national crisis into an event of self aggrandizement & it is beyond shameful to push the hidden agenda of his party in the face of global calamity. May sense prevail upon the PM," the JDS leader said in another tweet.

Amid a nationwide COVID-19 lockdown, Prime Minister Modi on Friday appealed to countrymen to light diyas and candles on April 5 at 9 pm to fight the darkness spread by the pandemic. He asked the people to turn off all the lights in their homes and stand at doors or balconies and light candles or diyas, torches or mobile flashlights for 9 minutes on April 5.

Last month, PM Modi had asked the people to come out in their balconies and clap and beat utensils to show appreciation for doctors, nurses and others helping fight coronavirus on 'Janata Curfew'.

New Delhi, Apr 29: WhatsApp on Tuesday said it will now allow up to eight people to connect on a group video call as an increasing number of people turn to digital platforms to connect with friends and family amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Facebook-owned company said over the last month, people on average are spending over 15 billion minutes talking each day on WhatsApp calls, well above a typical day before the pandemic.

"...we see that people all over the world are turning to voice and video calling on WhatsApp more than ever before. Group calling has been particularly useful and our users have asked to connect with more people at once," WhatsApp said in a blogpost.

Starting Tuesday, the company is doubling the number of participants one can have on a WhatsApp video or voice call from 4 to 8 people at a time, it added.

WhatsApp emphasised that like written messages, all calls on its platform are protected with end-to-end encryption.

"We have built group calling in a way that makes it available for as many users as possible, including people on lower-end devices and slow network conditions," it added.

WhatsApp said that to access the new, higher participant limit on WhatsApp calls, all participants in a call need to update to the latest version of WhatsApp available on iPhone or Android.

Video calling tools like Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and others have also seen a significant jump in userbase and traffic as people connect while maintaining social distancing amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Last week, Facebook had introduced Messenger Rooms that will soon hold up to 50 people with no time limit.

It had added that the company will also add ways to create rooms from Instagram Direct, WhatsApp and Portal.

Noting that between WhatsApp and Messenger, more than 700 million accounts participate in calls every day, Facebook had said, adding that video calling on Messenger and WhatsApp more than doubled in many countries.

Also, views of Facebook Live and Instagram Live videos have also increased significantly in March, it said.

New Delhi: BJP leader Yogish Gowda, who was a member of the Dharwad Zilla Panchayath in Karnataka, was killed because of "political reasons", the CBI has alleged in its charge sheet filed against eight accused before a Dharwad court, officials said on Thursday.

Mr Gowda was killed on June 15, 2016 in front of a gym in Dharwad.

The charge sheet was filed before the Judicial Magistrate First Class Court in Dharwad against Santosh Savadatti, Dinesh M, Sunil KS, Harshith, Aswath S, Nazeer Ahamad, Shanawaz and Nutan K. All but one are in judicial custody.

"The accused allegedly came to Dharwad on two occasions in June 2016 and with the support of the other accused, allegedly planned the murder of Yogish Gowda. These accused fled after the crime," CBI spokesperson RK Gaur said.

The agency has alleged that the killing had "political reasons" behind it and was a result of political rivalry, the officials said.

The agency had taken over the case on September 24, 2019, nearly three years after the murder, on the request of the BJP government in Karnataka and a referral from the centre.

The case was earlier probed by the Karnataka Police which had charged six people for allegedly planning and executing the killing.

The CBI has arrested eight accused in the case of which seven are in judicial custody, they said.

"Further investigation into the role of the other accused and larger conspiracy in this case is continuing on a day-to-day basis," Mr Gaur said.
