Dawood Ibrahim's sister Haseena Parkar dies of heart attack

July 7, 2014

Mumbai, Jul 7: Dawood Ibrahim's younger sister, Hasina Ibrahim Parkar, passed away in a hospital in the wanted underworld don's bastion of Dongri in South Mumbai yesterday. The police said that 51-year-old Hasina, also known as Hasina Aapa (elder sister) and the underworld queen, died of a massive heart attack.haseena

Hasina used to stay with her son Alishah and a 21-year-old-daughter in Nagpada's, Gordon House building, opposite the local police station. She had combined two flats in the building's first floor into a luxurious residence.

"Parkar started feeling uneasy around 2.30 pm on Sunday afternoon and was rushed to Habib Hospital in Dongri, where she was declared dead around 3.15 pm," said Additional Commissioner of Police (South Region) Krushna Prakash.

Around 150 people gathered in Nagpada to make preparations for the funeral once the news spread, and more guests and relatives were expected to arrive from the Khed area of Konkan, where Dawood hails from.

"She has died in a very good month the holy month of Ramzan. We are waiting for her relatives. We will have iftar and offer regular prayers in mosques and then take her body for burial to the Bada Kabaristan area in Marine Lines around 11 pm," said a female relative.

Cop cover

There were more police officers deployed at Gordon House building in the evening than there were mourners. Police officers from the Crime Branch, local police stations, anti-terrorism squad and even officials from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) were reportedly in the area.

"We have come to collect information about the people who are still in touch with India's most wanted gangster. Those who are in his good books will surely either come to the funeral or send some message, and our eyes are on them," said a Crime Branch officer.

Police officers, however, said they did not expect Dawood or Chhota Shakeel to come to India. "It is not possible for them to even think of entering India. Phone calls from Pakistan are being tapped and we will get all the information we need about Dawood's movements. Since the time the BJP-led Modi government came in power at the Centre, Dawood and his D-Company have been quiet," said the officer.

"Hasina and her children did not trouble neighbours at all. She used to go out regularly in her white Toyota Fortuner, and a Toyota Qualis before that, but never troubled anyone. She would greet people when she saw them," said Vilas Torane, who stays in the same building.

Game of thrones

Having been booked by the Mumbai Crime Branch for extortion, Hasina had told the police and court that she had stopped talking to her brother Dawood after her husband Ibrahim Parkar was gunned down by Arun Gawli's men in 1991.

The truth, police officials say, is almost exactly the opposite. After Dawood retaliated by killing Gawli's shooters at J J Hospital, Hasina's rise as the underworld queen began. And, after Dawood fled the country, Hasina started taking care of Dawood's properties and interests in Mumbai.

Police officials said she would take cuts from builders for development and redevelopment and almost no building could be constructed from South Mumbai right up to Bandra and Kurla without her assent. She would also settle disputes between parties, and her word was final. They said she was in regular touch with Dawood and must have met him several times during her trips to Dubai and Pakistan.

She had two sons, Danish and Alishah, and the former was Dawood's favourite nephew. Danish was very active and it was thought that he would be a great help to Hasina in her dealings, but he passed away in a car accident while returning from Khed in 2006. Alishah, sources said, is comparatively very quiet and did not fit in with the activities of the gang.

Tough times

This is not the first time a don will not be able to attend a major family event:

In February 2014: Underworld don Chhota Rajan's mother, Laxmi Sadashiv Nikhalje (88) passed away due to prolonged illness in Chembur. Rajan could not give light to his mother's pyre since the funeral took place in the watchful gaze of thousands of cops, who were waiting to net him.

In May 2011, a deadly attempt was made on Dawood's brother Iqbal Kaskar's life at his South Mumbai residence by Chhota Rajan. Dawood could not even make a call to his brother for fear of getting traced.

On August 20, 2010, 83-year-old Babumiyan Mayuddin Sheikh, father of underworld don Chhota Shakeel, and a resident of Temkar Mohalla area of South Mumbai, died while undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Shakeel could not make it to the funeral procession and is believed to have seen it through a video call

In 2005, Dawood could not attend his daughter Mahrukh's wedding in Dubai due to the presence of intelligence officials and the media. If sources are to be believed, he had watched the wedding through video conferencing. There were also reports that the don had organised a private reception with a few family members in Karachi.

A man posed as Superintendent of Police (SP), called up a subordinate police official and asked him to get his mobile phone repaired or face the consequences. But, his bluff was later called and the man landed in lockup.

Azamgarh SP Triveni Singh said the 23-year-old youth, Shubham Upadhyay, is the son of a farmer. He was preparing for competitive exams when his phone developed a snag on Saturday. He tried to reach out to local mechanics, but they were unavailable to fix it due to the lockdown.

Upadhyay used a free caller identification app to call up the in-charge of the Kotwali police station, K. K. Gupta, and threatened to shunt him out, if he failed to swiftly get the work done. Gupta grew suspicious and eventually caught the youth.

n his statement to the police, Shubham Upadhyay said, "On Sunday noon, I tried to breach the district borders to reach Lucknow to repair my phone, but since there was heavy police presence and barricading, I returned home. Later, I installed a free caller identification app in my handset and mentioned the name as SP Azamgarh and even uploaded a photo of the cop to appear genuine."

He first called SHO, Kotwali to get the phone repaired and was told the handset would be picked up from the SP office in an hour. Then, he called a businessman to bring his SUV and hand over his mobile to the SHO.

But when Upadhyay called the police again to suggest a separate meeting point, he raised suspicion. When the SHO tried to confirm the venue, Upadhyay got hesitant and said he would send a peon.

"I suddenly realised something was fishy and rang up the public relation officer of SP Azamgarh, who denied any such order from the SP. When the caller's number was scanned, it displayed the name of SP Azamgarh," said SHO Gupta.

A trap was laid and when the SHO reached the venue, he found one Praveen Shukla sitting in the vehicle. Police got the address of the accused from Shukla and reached Upadhyay's home in Bilariya locality and arrested him.

Upadhyay has been booked under IT Act and for threatening a public servant.

Panaji, Feb 23: A MiG-29K aircraft crashed off Goa during a routine training sortie on Sunday morning, the Indian Navy said in a statement.

"The pilot ejected safely and has been recovered. An enquiry into the incident has been ordered," the statement said.

On November 16, a MiG-29K trainer flight had crashed after a bird hit, soon after it took off the Dabolim International airport, which functions out of the Indian Navy base INS Hansa.

Both pilots had managed to safely eject themselves to safety after both the engines of their jet failed.

According to data tabled in the recent budget session of the Goa Assembly, every ten days, at least one aircraft landing or taking off at Goa's Dabolim international airport faces dangers involving birds or stray dogs near the runway.

Warangal, May 26: A 26-year-old man from Bihar was arrested here for murdering nine people by throwing them into a well to cover the murder of a woman, police said on Monday.

Dr Ravinder, Commissioner of Police (CP), Warangal, said that the bodies were recovered on May 21 and May 22 from the well. Investigation has revealed that the accused, Sanjay Kumar Yadav, killed all of them to cover up the murder of Rafiqa, with whom he had a relationship.

He said that Yadav got acquainted with a person named Maqsood and his sister-in-law Rafiqa. "Slowly, he came close to Rafiqa and started living together with her three children. Yadav tried to misbehave with Rafiqa's 15-year-old daughter. Rafiqa did not like this and threatened to lodge a complaint against him," Ravinder said.

"Then, Yadav planned to kill Rafiqa in order to live with her daughter. Yadav promised Rafiqa to marry. They boarded a train to West Bengal from March 7. Yadav mixed sleeping tablets in the food packet and later strangulated her, and threw her body outside the train," he said.

According to police, Yadav later came back to Warangal but Maqsood's wife Nisha started questioning him about the whereabouts of Rafiqa.

"Nisha threatened to lodge a police complaint against him. With a premeditated motive, from May 16 to May 20, he visited Maqsood's family who stayed in a gunny bag factory," he said.

Yadav purchased sleeping pills from Warangal and mixed in the food on the birthday of Maqsood's elder son on May 20, police said.

"Maqsood and his five family members were living there. Yadav mixed sleeping pills in the food and later they consumed it. Maqsood's family friend Shakeel was also there. Then, he went to the first floor of the factory where two labourers were staying. He mixed sleeping pills in their food too. He suspected that they may get up and create a problem. To cover up the murder of Rafiqa, he killed nine people," Ravinder said.

At around 12:30 am, Yadav woke up and saw that everyone is asleep, according to police.

"Then, he used the gunny bags to drag all the nine people into the well. He threw the gunny bag one by one into the well," Ravinder said.

According to the police, six teams were deployed to investigate the case.

"Yadav has been arrested now and will be taken to police custody. We will collect all evidence and ensure that he gets maximum punishment for this offence," Ravinder said.

Yadav will be released by court saying that he is mentally sick and he did not kill 10 people intentionally.
