Mangaluru, Aug 15: While affirming commitment of the district administration to stand by the flood-affected in Dakshina Kannada, Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil S. on Thursday asked people to join hands with the State government in rebuilding the lives of those affected in the district.

In his Independence Day address, after unfurling the national flag at the Nehru Maidan here, Mr. Senthil said that in the last one week the State has received a record rainfall which is the highest in the last 100 years. This has resulted in floods that has caused extensive damage to houses, farmland, roads and other communication infrastructure. “Loss is unbearable for the victims. It is our responsibility to rebuild their lives,” he said.

The district administration, he said, has already started restoration and rehabilitation work.

The State government has released ₹ 48.29 crore for 918 works that have been taken up.

He thanked personnel from the National Disaster Response Force and members from other agencies involved in the rescue operations. Mr. Senthil also lauded the services of government employees and members of various social organisations who are working in disaster relief.

Mr. Senthil hoisted the national flag at 9 a.m. amid heavy rain.

The India Meteorological Department had forecast widespread heavy rain in Mangaluru and other parts of the district on Thursday.

The district administration had arranged for makeshift shelters in the maidan for members of 20 teams that took part in the ceremonial parade at the maidan.

Following heavy rain, Mr. Senthil skipped the guard of honour and immediately proceeded to deliver the ceremonial address. As rain abated, Mr. Senthil inspected the ceremonial parade that was led by Probationary Deputy Superintendent of Police Shivanand S. Madarakandi.

The first team in the parade was the one from Karnataka State Reserve Police, which was followed by personnel from District/City Armed Reserve, Civil Police, Women Police, Coastal Security Police, Home Guards, Fire and Emergency Services, NCC Senior and Junior Wings from the Army and the Air Force, NCC Naval Wing, Loyola Scouts team from St. Aloysius College, Guides team from Vyasamaharshi School, Mulky, and students from Government High Primary Schools in Balmatta and Kavoor. Bands from KSRP and District Armed Reserve were also part of the parade.

The NCC Air Wing Senior team was adjudged the best marching team, while the NCC Naval Wing was adjudged the runners-up.

Mangaluru, June 21: A gang of miscreants intercepted a goods auto-rickshaw which was legally transporting beef from an abattoir to market and attacked its driver in heart of the city this morning.

The attack comes exactly a week after a gang of Bajrang Dal miscreants thrashed a cattle trader at Urwa while legally transporting four buffalos to Kudroli abattoir on June 13.

Today, a person identified as Abdul Rasheed was transporting around 200 kilograms of beef from Kudroli abattoir to Kankanady market.

Meanwhile, miscreants began to chase beef laden vehicle and managed to waylay it near Highland Hospital. They thrashed Abdul Rasheed and poured kerosene on the beef besides damaging the vehicle.

The miscreants fled in their car and motorbikes after passersby began to gather.

Dear DC Dr. Harsha, we want to know if you will take strict action on these anti nationals / rowdis / day robbers / terrorists who ransacked auto + beaten the auto driwer and stolen Rs. 10,000 from him though he was legally transporting the meat.   They same terrorists are involved in transporting live animals to beef export houses in Gujrat owned by Brahmins / Jains.   Will you be loyal to your duty and promise.   We will see how you will handle the issue failing which you will lose our respect and we will consider you as a dramabaz and phenku.   You should follow the law and treat everyone equally.  There should not be any pity on goondas/ terrorists belonging to sangh parivar.   The terrorists who thrashed the auto driver and damaged the auto and burnt the meat by pouring kerosene are not human beings and should be treated as anti nationals + terrorists.    We hope you will discharge your duty as per the oath taken by you while accepting your post.

Bengaluru, May 20: Karnataka Congress leaders held a protest against the state government against amending of APMC Act, at the premises of Vidhan Soudha here.

Few days ago, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had said that the new amendment in the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Act will substantially aid the farmers in getting remunerative price for their produce.

"Amendment will not dilute the powers of the work of the APMCs. All these marketing activities will be monitored by the Directorate of State APMC. This new amendment Act will benefit farmers in improving their income & suffering from losses due to market fluctuations," the Karnataka CM tweeted.

Yediyurappa further said that the amendment will indirectly help farmers in doubling their income by 2022.

"This amendment will indirectly help farmers in doubling their income by 2022. I want to clarify that we have not removed the APMC Act, we are only amending 2 sections of the APMC Act which enable farmers to sell their produce at the markets where they intend to," he tweeted.
