Guwahati, Jun 5: In one of the most deadly attacks on the Army, at least 20 soldiers were killed and a dozen injured when militants laid an ambush on Thursday morning in Manipur.ambush

The attack comes close on the heels of a renewed demand in the state to repeal the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).

Sources said the attack took place when soldiers from 6 Dogra Regiment were being de-inducted from Moltuk valley in the insurgency-infested Chandel district.

Around 8 am, the soldiers left their base for Imphal in three trucks with camp equipment and fuel. Twenty minutes later, the convoy reached Tengnoupal around 120 km south-west of capital Imphal, where it was ambushed.

Sources said 50 militants laid the ambush and fired upon the convoy with Rocket Propelled Grenades and other automatic weapons.

The convoy came under heavy fire from both sides of the road, sources added.

The Army contingent had very little time to react and could not retaliate. Sources in the Manipur Police said the militants might have used Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to inflict maximum casualty. The Manipur Police, however, said that one militant was killed in the retaliatory fire and several others were injured.

A joint platform of militant groups from the North-East has claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement, the rebel groups claimed that a combined team of Elite Strike Unit of Naga Army, KYKL and KCP ambushed a five-vehicle Army convoy. The attack started around 6 am and lasted till 10 am.

The outfits claimed that the joint offensive was launched to assert their right for self-determination and sovereignty.

Sources told Deccan Herald that the attack was planned at a recent meeting of top militant leaders of the North-East in Taka area of Sagaing division of Myanmar.

United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) chief Paresh Barua on Thursday evening called up a TV channel in Guwahati and claimed that this is the beginning of unified attacks by all the banned militant groups of the North-East.

Indian intelligence sources have added that several banned militants groups from the North-East, including the United Liberation Font of Assam (ULFA-Independent), National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), the Peoples’ Liberation Army (PLA), the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) have their bases there and is guided by the NSCN-K.

“By plan of the attack it seems it can be the handiwork of a combined team of UNLF, PLA and NSCN-K. The aim is to create fear and send across a message that they are not down and out. Ever since NSCN-K broke out of ceasefire, the porous Indo-Myanmar border has been tense,” said a senior Military Intelligence officer.

In New Delhi, an Army spokesperson said 20 personnel were killed and at least 11 injured. Initially, the injured jawans were airlifted from the ambush site to Leimakhong Army Hospital located at GOC 57 Mountain Division, where five jawans succumbed to their injuries. Later, other injured jawans were airlifted to the Army Base hospital in Jorhat and Guwahati. The dead includes a Junior Commissioned Officer.

Meanwhile, the Manipur Police said that one militant was killed in the retaliatory fire and several others were injured.

Bhopal, June 7: In a shocking incident of medical cruelty, an 80-year-old man was tied to a hospital bed in Madhya Pradesh after he allegedly failed to make payment of fees for his treatment. The incident took place at the City Hospital in Shajapur.

The hospital, however, claimed that he was having convulsions and as a result had his hands and legs tied so that he could not hurt himself.

The man’s family members have accused the hospital authorities of resorting to the heinous act after they failed to pay a fee of Rs 11,000 for his treatment at the.

“We had deposited a bill of Rs 5,000 at the time of admission but when the treatment took a few more days, we did not have the money to pay the bill,” his daughter told the channel.

The hospital, however, maintained that the man was shackled because he was suffering from an electrolyte imbalance. “He was having convulsions because of electrolyte imbalance,” an unidentified doctor said. “We tied him so that he could not hurt himself.”
The doctor claimed the hospital had waived off the man’s bill on “humanitarian grounds”.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan took cognizance of the matter and promised strict action against the hospital authorities.

The Shajapur administration has also ordered an inquiry and has sent a police team to the hospital for investigation, the district collector told media persons.

Mumbai, Feb 26: Observing that the violence in Delhi is akin to a "horror film" depicting the grim reality of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, the Shiv Sena on Wednesday said the "bloodbath" has brought disrepute to the national capital like never before while US President Donald Trump was in India with the "message of love".

The editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana' lamented that Trump was welcomed in Delhi while there was bloodbath on the streets.

It further said that the violence could potentially spread the message that the Central government has failed to maintain the law and order situation in Delhi.

"Violence has erupted in Delhi. People are on the streets equipped with canes, swords, revolvers, blood is being spilled on the roads. Some horror film-like situation is being witnessed in Delhi, which depicts the grim reality of the 1984 riots," the Sena said.

It further said the BJP was still blaming the Congress for the deaths of hundreds of Sikhs in the violence that was erupted after assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

It needs to be unravelled who is responsible for the current riots in Delhi, the Sena said while referring to the "language of threats and warning used by some BJP leaders".

"The national capital was burning at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting US President Trump were holding talks.

"It does not augur well that Trump was welcomed in Delhi with the horror film of violence, bloodbath on the streets, screams of people, and tear gases. Trump saheb came to Delhi with a message of love, but what unfolded before him? 'Namaste' in Ahmedabad and violence in Delhi. Never before Delhi was defamed like this," the editorial said.

Trump had begun his February 24-25 India visit from Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

Seventeen people have died so far and over hundred were injured in the violence that has gripped several parts of north east Delhi over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) since Sunday.

Attacking the Central government over reports that the violence was timed with Trump's visit, Sena said, "the Union Home Ministry has alleged that a conspiracy was hatched to defame India internationally by triggering the violence during Trump's visit to the national capital.

"The Home Ministry not knowing about the conspiracy behind the violence over the CAA is detrimental to national security. There is no problem in controlling the riots with the same courage with which Article 370 and 35A were scrapped," the editorial said.

It further said the anti-CAA protest at Shaheen Bagh in Delhi was yet to be called off yet despite the Supreme Court appointing mediators.

"It is being said that the violence sparked off after some BJP leaders talked the language of threats and warning. So, did someone want the peaceful agitation (at Shaheen Bagh) to acquire the present form of riots? (They) could have waited for at least Trump to leave the country," the Sena said.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led party also questioned the timing of the riots, which are occurring days after the results of the Delhi assembly polls.

"It is mysterious that the violence broke out days after the BJP lost the Delhi assembly elections. The BJP lost and now this is the condition of Delhi," the Sena said.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led party, a former ally of the BJP, now shares power in Maharashtra with the NCP and the Congress.
