Death toll of tourists from Karnataka mounts to 8 in Sri Lanka blasts

Bengaluru, Apr 23: Sri Lankan authorities have confirmed the death of at least eight tourists from Karnataka including JD(S) workers in the serial blasts that ripped through Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday.

Soon after the Sri Lankan foreign ministry announced details of Indian victims, the Karnataka government on Monday evening confirmed the death of six tourists and minutes later, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, in a tweet, mentioned the death of two more Kannadigas.

Confirming the death of four tourists from Bengaluru who happened to be JD(S) workers, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy identified the victims as Lakshmana Gowda Ramesh, K M Lakshminarayana, M Rangappa and K G Hanumantharayappa. Later in the evening, Kumaraswamy tweeted to announce the death of yet another JD(S) worker H Shivakumar.

Subsequently, sources also confirmed that Maregowda, one of those who were reported missing, was also dead.

Meanwhile, Sushma Swaraj tweeted about the death of Nagaraj S R and V Tulsiram. While Nagaraj was confirmed to be from Bengaluru, it was not clear where Tulsiram hailed from, according to sources.

Condemning the attack, Kumaraswamy tweeted, “I am deeply pained at the loss of our people in the Colombo attacks. Chief Secretary T M Vijay Bhaskar is in constant touch with the Indian High Commission and coordinating with officials.”

The state government has appointed senior IAS officer Anjum Parvez as the nodal officer to coordinate with the Indian embassy in Sri Lanka. Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda also spoke to Sushma Swaraj and sought help to safeguard tourists from Karnataka.

Sources in the Sri Lankan tourism industry also revealed that there were at least 30 people from Karnataka at Shangri La hotel when the bomb exploded. However, the Indian High Commission authorities are yet to confirm it.

Following the blasts, the state government has been making all efforts to evacuate all stranded travellers from Sri Lanka.

“A group of tourists stranded in Kandy is on its way back and they will help us in identifying the dead,” the Chief Minister tweeted. A team of five tourists from Bengaluru landed at Kempegowda International Airport on Monday evening.

Bengaluru, Feb 6: A flower vendor from Channapatna town in Karnataka got a shock of his life when he found a credit of Rs 30 crore in his wife's bank account. This happened when Syed Malik Burhan was struggling to meet expenses for a medical emergency in the family.

According to reports, bank officials knocked on his doors on December 2 asking him to explain how the money came to his account.

"On December 2, they came searching our house. They only said a huge amount has been deposited in my wife's (Rehana) account and then asked me to come to the Bank along with my wife carrying Aadhaar card," Mr Burhan said.

He claimed that the Bank staff sought to exert pressure on him to sign on a document but he refused. Mr Burhan recalled that he had purchased a saree through an online portal following which he received a call seeking his bank details which, he was told, were needed as he had won a car.

"Since then, we are running from pillars to post to find out how the money came to our account. We had only Rs 60 but suddenly such huge money came, which we are unable to understand," said Mr Burhan.

Mr Burhan said he had lodged a complaint with the Income Tax department, which he claimed was not keen on investigating it initially. Based on his complaint, the Channapatna town police in Ramanagara district registered a case of forgery and impersonation under the IPC besides the Information Technology Act for cheating and impersonation on January nine.

According to police, there were many financial transactions, which Mr Burhan may be unaware of. "We are trying to find out what these transactions mean. We will arrest whoever is behind it. We will not spare them," said a police officer in Channapatna.

Mangaluru, Feb 1: Rotary Club of Mangalore city team represented by Rtn. Dr. Ranjan Rao and Rtn. Sumith Rao duo bagged the 14th Annual prestigious Rotary Quiz Trophy by securing 380 points. The Rotary Club of Vijayanagar Mysore represented by  Rtn. H.M. Harish secured 370 points and was declared runners up.

Rotary Club of Mangaluru central as a part of Rotary movement awareness campaign conducted their 14th Annual “Dist. Level Inter Club Rotary Quiz”  contest on Friday 31.01.2020 at Hotel Ocean Pearl Hall, Mangaluru. The Quiz was based exclusively on Rotary related affairs, matters and issues.

Chamarajnagar City based Eminent Pediatrician and Rotary past Dist. Governor Rtn. Dr.R. Nagarajun  graced the occasion as Chief Guest, in is address he lauded the  invaluable contributions of Dr. Rai to the Rotary Movement and congratulated on his achievements.  Later he awarded the Rotary Glittering Trophy, Certificates and Cash prizes of R.3,000 to the Winners and Runners up and congratulated them on their unique achievements.

13 Teams from Mangaluru, Bykampady, Panamburu, Deralaktte, Puttur, Mysore, participated in this contest. Rtn. Dr. Devdas Rai was the Quiz Master and officiated the closely contested  quiz contest. Asst. Governor Zone-2  Rtn. Geethanand Pai was the guest of honour he released the weekly club news bulletin “Centor”. Club President Rtn. Dr. Jayaprakash Poonja presided over the function. Bengaluru, May 6: Karnataka has reported 20 new cases of coronavirus taking total number of cases in the state to 693.

The state health department said in a bulletin on Wednesday that 20 new cases have been confirmed for COVID-19 in the state. "The total number of cases in the state is 693," it said.

The count includes 354 patients who have been discharged and 29 patients who succumbed to the disease.

Out of the remaining cases, 303 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals while six patients are in ICU. The bulletin has also reported one death due to non-COVID cause.

The number of COVID-19 cases in the country reached 49,391, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday morning.

This includes 33,514 active cases and 1,694 deaths due to infection so far.

A total of 14,182 persons have been cured and discharged so far, according to the Health Ministry. One patient has migrated.
