Delhi church gutted in mysterious fire, probe begins

New Delhi, Dec 1: A Catholic church in Delhi was gutted under mysterious circumstances Monday, police said. The caretakers of the church have alleged the involvement of some unidentified men in the fire. Police have not ruled out any possibility and have begun a probe.

fire The blaze was noticed around 7.15 a.m. at the Saint Sebastian's Church in east Â Delhi's Dilshad Garden area by a chowkidar (guard) who informed the Delhi Fire Service and the caretakers.

"We all rushed to the spot and found flames coming out of the prayer hall on the Â ground floor and the balcony on the first floor," Father Stanley said.

Four fire tenders were pressed into service and the blaze was controlled within three Â hours.

"Almost everything was gutted. Nothing is left inside the building. The place where the Bible and other prayer things are kept has been completely destroyed," said Father Stanley, who lives in Gol Dak Khana area in central Delhi.

The church was established in an area having a mixed population of Hindus and Christians.

Another caretaker told IANS that about 5,000 Christians stay in localities around the Â church established in 2001.

"The windows were broken and some inflammable substance has also been detected by police," he said. "It appears that the fire was started intentionally. It might be the handiwork of Â some miscreants," he added.

Deputy Commissioner of Police R.A. Sanjeev told IANS: "A case has been registered and Â probe is on. We are also looking at the angle of a possible short circuit."

A protest has been planned by Christian groups Tuesday morning in front of the police headquarters at ITO.

Over 150 people offer prayers at the church daily in the evening, while the church witnesses around 500-600 people on Saturdays and Sundays.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal visited the church and demanded that Â Delhi Police conduct "a serious, thorough, time-bound and impartial probe" to ascertain the reasons behind the mysterious fire.

"The Aam Aadmi Party is shocked at the way police has handled the case so far. When former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal asked police about the progress in its investigation after he saw the condition of the church, the Delhi Police top brass appeared unaware about the gravity of the incident," said an AAP statement.

Centre, Delhi govt working in close coordination to deal with coronavirus: Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi, Mar 9: The Centre and the Delhi government are working in close coordination to deal with coronavirus, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said here on Monday.

Talking to reporters after a review meeting with Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on the preparedness for COVID-19, the chief minister said people arriving from foreign countries are being screened at airports.

A campaign will be run to make people aware of the preventive measures to contain the spread of the disease, Kejriwal said.

Health Ministry sending directives to states: Vardhan

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said the government is prepared to deal with novel coronavirus and his ministry is sending directives, including guidelines, to states in all the languages on ways to contain it.

"We are sending detailed guidelines to all states on ways to contain coronavirus. Have asked states to strengthen laboratories and manpower to effectively deal with coronavirus and form early rapid action teams," Vardhan told reporters adding, that the government is prepared to deal with the infection.

Vardhan stressed on a coordinated action between all concerned departments and agencies for activities such as contact tracing, community surveillance, hospital management, identification of isolation wards, ensuring adequate personal protection equipment and masks and risk communication for mass awareness.

Women's college issues dress code, prohibits burqa

Patna, Jan 25: JD Women's College in Patna has issued a direction to the students to follow the prescribed dress code on the campus while stating that wearing a 'burqa' in college is prohibited.

"All students have to come to college in the prescribed dress code, every day except on Saturday. Students are prohibited from wearing 'burqa' in college", reads a notice signed by the Principal and Proctor of the college.

The college administration has also imposed a fine of Rs. 250 for violation of the norm.

I think this college management will allow girl students to wear tight jeans + t-shair and miniskirts but is not allowing a girl to cover her body. Are we in ancient days where humans had no dress to cover themselves or in the time of Nair kings in kerala who restricted ladies of low caste from covering their chest.

Jan 27: Bollywood Film Director Anurag Kashyap, who has been vocal about his political views on social media, slammed Union Minister Amit Shah and accused him of being 'cheap'.

"How timid our Home Minister is. Its own police, its own goons, its own army and security increases and invades unarmed protestors. Amit Shah has crossed the extent of cheapness and inferiority. History will spit on this animal," Kashyap tweeted.

The film director has taken an active part in the anti-Citizenship Act protest rallies and was against the Jawaharlal Nehru violence. He also came in support of his contemporary Deepika Padukone when the latter faced backlash for showing up at JNU in support of the students.
