New Delhi, May 27: Court accepts the AAP leader’s bail bond filed by his advocate in a criminal defamation complaint against him by BJP leader Nitin Gadkari.court releases kejriwal

A Delhi court on Tuesday ordered forthwith the release of Arvind Kejriwal from Tihar Jail after the Aam Aadmi Party leader furnished the bail bond in a criminal defamation complaint filed against him by BJP leader Nitin Gadkari, changing his earlier stand against it.

Metropolitan Magistrate Gomati Manocha accepted the personal bond filed by Mr. Kejriwal’s counsel in compliance with the order passed by the Delhi High Court.

“It is also submitted that Arvind Kejriwal has written in his own handwriting that he is filing the personal bond in compliance with the High Court order.

“In view of this, the personal bond furnished is accepted,” the court said, adding, “Let the accused be released forthwith.”

During the hearing, advocate Rahul Mehra, who appeared for Mr. Kejriwal, told the court that their writ petition is pending before the High Court and Mr. Kejriwal has agreed to file the bond.

The court said that the release order will be sent to the Tihar Jail through a special messenger.

Mr. Kejriwal’s counsel showed to the magistrate the written consent given by the former Delhi Chief Minister accepting the suggestion of the High Court to furnish personal bond.

Mr. Kejriwal gave the letter in his hand writing when senior advocate Shanti Bhushan and advocate Prashant Bhushan went to Tihar Jail to meet him after taking permission from the High Court.

Earlier in the day, the High Court suggested Mr. Kejriwal to furnish a bail bond and get released from the jail.

He was sent to judicial custody by the magistrate on May 21, 2014 for two days. On May 23, his custody was extended by 14 days till June 6 after he refused to furnish a bail bond when he was granted bail in the case.

The magistrate had refused to review its May 21 order remanding Mr. Kejriwal in judicial custody for not furnishing the bail bond and had asked him to approach the higher court, challenging the decision.

The AAP leader was earlier summoned as an accused by the court in connection with the complaint in which BJP leader Nitin Gadkari had alleged that he was defamed by Mr. Kejriwal, who had included his name in the party’s list of “India’s most corrupt“.

On May 21, the court had granted bail to Mr. Kejriwal, saying the offence under Section 500 of IPC (dealing with defamation) was bailable and had asked him to furnish a personal bond.

He, however, was taken into custody after he refused to give the bail bond, saying the case was politically motivated and he does not wish to seek bail. He had said that he was ready to give an undertaking that he would appear in the court whenever required.

The court had on February 28 summoned Mr. Kejriwal as an accused in the case, observing that statements allegedly made by the AAP leader have the effect of “harming the reputation” of the complainant.

New Delhi, Mar 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned emotional on Saturday when a woman beneficiary of his government's generic medicine programme told him that she had seen God in him.

Dehradun-resident Deepa Shah, who suffered paralysis in 2011, was interacting with the prime minister through video-conference on the occasion of Jan Aushadhi Diwas.

"I have not seen god, but I have seen God in you," she said, tears rolling down her eyes.

Modi was visibly emotional as the woman repeated her remark.

She also thanked the Uttarakhand chief minister and others who had helped her all along and said doctors had once told her that she cannot be cured.

"But on hearing your voice I have become better," she told Modi while profusely thanking the prime minister for his efforts to reduce the cost of medicines.

An emotional prime minister paused for a moment before telling her that it was her courage that had won over her disease and that she must carry on with the spirit.

Shah was expressing her plight and how she had suffered due to high cost of medicines after she suffered from paralysis in 2011 and has now started saving Rs 3,500 every month after benefitting from the government's low-cost generic medicines programme.

Soon after Shah rose to express her views, Modi asked her to sit and speak as he said she was uncomfortable while standing.

"You have defeated disease with your own will power. Your courage is your god and that same courage has given you the strength to emerge from such a big crisis. You should carry on this confidence in you," Modi told her.

He said some people still keep spreading rumours about generic medicines, going by their past experience, wondering how can medicines be available so cheap and that there must be something wrong with the medicine.

"But, by seeing you countrymen would gain confidence that there is nothing wrong in generic medicines. These medicines are not at all of inferior quality than any other medicine. These medicines have been certified by the best laboratories. These medicines are made in India and is 'Make in India' and are cheap," the prime minister said.

He said there is demand for generic medicines from India across the world and the government has made it mandatory for doctors to prescribe generic medicines to patients, unless necessary.

New Delhi, Feb 11: Celebrations broke out at the AAP headquarters here as early vote-counting trends for the Delhi Assembly polls on Tuesday showed a comfortable victory for the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led party.

The headquarters were decorated with blue and white balloons and big cut-outs of Kejriwal were placed in different parts of the party office.

"We knew it. We have changed the politics of this country. Now it is Delhi, next is India," said Sanjeev Singh, a party volunteer from Hari Nagar.

Another volunteer Fareen Khan said, "We hope we get such a clear majority that a message goes out that doing Hindu-Muslim politics will not work anymore."

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is leading in 26 seats while the BJP is leading in 14 seats, according to early trends by the Election Commission.

According to the EC's website, AAP convenor Kejriwal is leading in his New Delhi constituency.

Kejriwal reached the party office as the counting of votes got underway.

Counting centres are spread across 21 locations, spanning 70 constituencies.

Polling for the 70-member Delhi Assembly was held on Saturday.

New Delhi, Jun 30: Amid calls for boycotting Chinese products after India-China face-off in eastern Ladakh, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government claiming that imports from China have increased under the NDA regime.

"Facts don't lie. BJP says: Make in India. BJP does: Buy from China," Gandhi tweeted along with a graphic of the percentage of imports from China during the UPA rule and the NDA government.

The graphic claims that imports from China were at 12-13 per cent when the Congress-led UPA government vacated office in 2014 but now stood at 17-18 per cent in 2020.

The Congress leader has been vehemently targeting the Centre on the India-China border situation after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in violent face-off with Chinese troops in Ladakh's Galwan valley earlier this month.

Indian intercepts have revealed that the Chinese side suffered 43 casualties, including dead and seriously injured, in the face-off.
