Delhi Dynamos, Pune City FC play out first goalless draw of ISL

October 15, 2014

New Delhi, Oct 15: Delhi Dynamos were better but wasteful as they paid the price for their profligacy even as Alessandro del Piero’s presence failed to break the deadlock in their barren draw against FC Pune City in the Hero Indian Super League here today.

Delhi Dynamos‘King Alex’ did not start, much to the disappointment of the 30000-odd turnout at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, but the Italian and Juventus legend was introduced in the 37th minute amid the loudest cheers from a fairly packed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

The Dynamos missed chances galore till the final whistle. In the 90th minute, Brazilian Gustavo Dos Santos, coming on as a late substitute, unleashed a left-footer only to see the ball hitting the upright after the goalkeeper was beaten.

Five minutes before that, Hans Mulder received a curled free-kick from Del Piero, but his header sailed over the bar Delhi called the shots in the first half, creating innumerable chances but, at the end of first half, their domination came to naught as the scoreline remained goalless.

Leading the side, Mads Junker had a bad day in office, failing to lead from the front, the number of misses adding to his agony.

The flurry of misses had the crowd frustrated and it needed the arrival of Del Piero to break the ennui in the stands. The huge roar was followed by the Mexican wave and it repeated for a while at the JLN.

Del Piero was on the ball right away, at 39 trying his best to create opportunities. His enterprise delighted the many heads totting the stands but a goal remained elusive.

After a none-too-impressive outing in the first 45 minutes, Junker had a chance to get his team ahead but he could not clear Emanuele Belardy at the goal after receiving what could have been a decisive through from Shylo ‘Mama’ Malsawmtluanga. Earlier, the Danish also had opportunities in the 11th and 19th minute which he wasted.

Content playing in the deep before the break, Pune made a couple of quick changes bringing in Dudu Omagbemi for Israil Gurung and replacing Greek World Cupper Kostas Katsouranis with Indian midfielder Mehrajudding Wadoo.

Meanwhile, in the 68th minute, Del Piero unleashed a scorcher from 25 yards but his attempt curled a bit more than he would have wanted, missing the target by whisker.

In the first half, Dynamos had the possession and were also far ahead in terms of creating chances.

The Dynamos’ overseas trio of Junker, Morten Skoubo and Hans Mulder and ably assisted by Francis Fernandez on the right flank, did give Pune tense moments but the hosts’ inability to finish saved the visiting side.

Around the 10th minute mark, Delhi had a sniff at goal after the host players make inroads into the box, but nobody was there for the final touch.

Just before that, Trezeguet shot straight at the goalkeeper Kristof Van Hout. While the visitors, who had players such as Trezeguet and Katsouranis, lacked sting and imagination, the hosts were guilty of lacking finishing touches.

Jun 20: Bengaluru FC (BFC) have signed Brazilian striker Cleiton Silva for a one-year deal, the ISL club said in a statement on Saturday.

As per the agreement, BFC have the option of extending Silva's contract for another year.

The 33-year-old, who started his career with Brazilian side Madureira, moved to Thailand where he spent the better part of the decade playing for Muangthong United and Suphanburi, apart from stints in Mexico and China.

Silva, who also operates on the wing, became the first foreign player to reach the 100-goal mark in Thailand and finished top scorer of the Thai League 1 for two seasons. He also tops the charts of the all-time leading scorers of the League.

His biggest success came at Muangthong where he racked up 57 goals in 79 appearances and won three major trophies in as many seasons at the club.

The Brazilian, who was in talks with the Blues last season before the deal didn't materialise, said he was glad to have finally made the move.

"I've signed with Bengaluru FC because I want to be a champion and this is a club that is always after titles. I have that opportunity once again at BFC. I want to make the club and its fans happy. I have been following the club for some time now because we were in talks a while ago. And I liked what I saw. I am looking forward to making my way to Bengaluru and am excited to meet my new teammates, the fans and embrace the city," said Silva.

Silva, thus, became BFC's first new foreign signing of the season after the club had handed extended deals with Juanan Gonzalez, Dimas Delgado and Erik Paartalu.

Bengaluru FC coach Carles Cuadrat said Silva's addition was an important one, given his penchant for scoring.

"Cleiton has a proven track record when it comes to scoring and this is an area we needed to strengthen on the squad. The goals aside, he even has an eye for a quality final pass and we're looking forward to working with him," he said.

Milan, Mar 28: Juventus star Paulo Dybala revealed how he "struggled to breathe" after contracting coronavirus which has killed over 9,000 people in Italy.

The Argentine international announced last Saturday he was one of three Juventus players to catch the virus along with Daniele Rugani and Blaise Matuidi, who both had no symptoms.

"I feel better now after some strong symptoms," the 26-year-old Dybala told JTV channel.

"A couple of days ago I was not well, I felt heavy and after five minutes of movement I had to stop because I was struggling to breathe.

"Now I can move and walk to start trying to train, because when I tried in the past few days I started to shake too much.

"I gasped for air and as a result I couldn't do anything, after five minutes I was already very tired, I felt the body heavy and my muscles hurt.

"Now I'm fine. My fiancee Oriana (Sabatini) has also overcome the symptoms."

Dybala has scored 13 goals in all competitions this season, including in league leader's Juventus's last game against Inter Milan before Serie A and all sport in Italy was suspended.

"The goal against Inter was the greatest emotion, (Aaron) Ramsey provided the perfect assist - it's a pity that there was no public," added Dybala.
