Deluge in Chennai; people face the wrath of Nature

Chennai, Dec 2: Steady and continuous rains throughout the night kept people in Tamil Nadu's capital Chennai awake due to concerns over the rising water levels, residents said.

"Water came into ourAPARTMENT and we had to shift to our neighbour's house on the first floor," Revathi Vasan, resident of west Mambalam, told IANS on Wednesday.

Another family living on the ground floor has also shifted with us, Revathi said.

"There is waist deep water level around ourAPARTMENT ," she added.

West Mambalam is located in the heart of the city.

In suburban areas flooding was severe with water levels covering the ground floor and threatening to enter the first floor.

People living at higher levels were opening up their doors to help the strangers.

"The situation was bad and the water level was increasing," Jenson, resident of Sunambu Kolathur of Kanchipuram district told IANS.

EvenMARKET areas like Anna Nagar in the city could not escape from flooding.

In many areas people made shift boats by tying up empty barrels to reach safer places.

The airport was closed Tuesday night, and could not start operations due to water logging in the runway.

Several passengers were stranded at the airport, railway and bus stations.

There was no power supply in many areas of Chennai, and mobile phone services were also affected due to the rains.

Meanwhile hotels were getting frantic calls from residents and stranded passengers for accommodation.

"We have couple of families staying with us as they were affected by water logging," a hotel official told IANS.

"In Villivakkam area the water level was up to my chest. I had to wade through the water for couple of kms and then catch a bus to my work place in Teynampet," Suresh who works with a private sector company said.

It was raining opportunity for taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers who were charging sky high rates to ply short distances.

A taxi driver charged Rs.4,500 to transport three persons from airport to aHOTEL IN Anna Salai.

Meanwhile, army and navy teams were called to carry out rescue efforts.

Schools and colleges were closed in the city.

The unprecedented torrential rains, which was recorded heaviest in the past 100 years, has battered Tamil Nadu's northern districts such as Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Cuddalore, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said while speaking to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.

Jayalalithaa told Modi that the state machinery was geared up to tackle the challenges.
The state has deployed Disaster Response Force, fire and rescue service personnel and coastal security group at the affected places.

The rains stopped on Wednesday morning and provided some respite to the people, but the weather office has forecast heavy rains for next three days.

During the last spell of rains, around 180 people lost their lives in the four district of Chennai, Kanchipuram, Cuddalore and Thiruvallur.

New Delhi, May 29: In a powerful display of inter community solidarity, a team of Sikh volunteers visited Delhi's Jama Masjid and sanitized the 17th century monument.

As the national capital battled coronavirus, the historic Jama Masjid is closed for congregational prayers. However, the team of Sikh volunteers effectively sanitized the monument to ensure it is safe for the caretakers and visitors.

The volunteers affiliated with United Sikhs organization also met Naib Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Syed Shaban Bukhari during the visit. The latter thanked the team for the humanitarian gesture and underlined the need for all sections of humanity to unite in the face of this crisis.

"The Sikh community has always displayed exemplary commitment to humanity and we are thankful to the United Sikhs' team for their initiative. This enormous crisis facing the human race can be fought off only if all communities, nations and people unite and fight it together. In recent weeks we have seen heart wrenching images of misery in the country as thousands of migrant workers return to their villages. At the same time we have also seen positive stories of different people uniting to help and feed them. We hope that together we will overcome this crisis," said Syed Shaban Bukhari, Naib Shahi Imam, Jama Masjid, Delhi.

Shaban Bukhari has also advised Muslims across the country to strictly avoid congregational prayers this Eid and pray at homes. He is young leader, who really believes in secularism. For him, humanity and kindness come first.

Kota, Jun 19: In a shocking incident, a COVID-19 patient in Rajasthan's Kota district died after his family disconnected the ventilator to plug in the air cooler to combat the scorching heat.

The incident happened on June 15 in the Maharao Bhimsingh Hospital (MBS) hospital.

A committee was formed soon after the death was reported, which will submit its report on Friday at 4 p.m., hospital Medical Superintendent Naveen Saxena told media persons.

He said, "We have set up the committee to investigate the incident based on the primary information. The committee includes deputy superintendent of the hospital, nursing superintendent and CMO. We will look into the matter and then shall explore further action for a need to go to the police."

The family members of the COVID-19 patient, who came to meet him in the MBS hospital unplugged the ventilator and had put on the cooler switch which they had brought from outside. The ventilator worked for some time on the battery but later it collapsed and the patient turned critical.

The doctors were reported of the patient's critical condition who came rushing and did all they could do to save his life, but the result was unfavourable and the patient died.

The relatives, on the other hand, attacked the resident doctors after the patient died.

Doctor Varun, on duty, submitted a written complaint to the officials, alleging that the patients' relatives misbehaved with the staff. Other resident doctors also supported him and boycotted work very briefly, but then later resumed work.

New Delhi, Mar 25: The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in India rose to 562, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday.
This includes 512 active cases, while 40 infected people have already been cured or discharged.
The Union Health Ministry said that total deaths due to the disease now stand at 9, as the second death reported in Delhi is COVID-19 negative. One patient has also migrated due to the infection.
The Central government has taken several steps to contain the rapid spread of the virus including the screening 15,24,266 passengers at the airports.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Tuesday announced a 21-day lockdown in the entire country effective from midnight to deal with the spread of coronavirus, saying that "social distancing" is the only option to deal with the disease, which spreads rapidly.
In a televised address to the nation, Prime Minister Modi said that it is vital to break the chain of the disease and experts have said that at least 21 days are needed for it.
The Prime Minister, who had also addressed the nation last week, said the lockdown has drawn a "Lakshman Rekha" in every home and people should stay indoors for their own protection and for that of their families.
