Mangaluru, Aug 10: The unabated rain has literally brought life to a standstill in Dakshina Kannada as most rivers including Netravati and Kumaradhara overflowed, submerging roads and bridges across the district. Water in the rivers has touched the danger level at many places.

Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil has appealed to the people residing on the banks of rivers to shift to safer places. Nodal officers camping in the flood-prone areas are all set to tackle flood situation, he added.

“Residents on either side of the Netravati river between Uppinangady and Mangaluru should shift immediately. Officials have been camping in identified spots where there are possibilities of flooding. Our teams are fully prepared to face any situation,” said Mr Senthil.

The district administration has extended the holiday to anganwadi centres, schools, colleges and postgraduation centres to the fourth consecutive day on Saturday. Fishermen were advised not to go on deep-sea fishing for the next three days.

Meanwhile, stretches on national highways and state highways in the district have been flooded due to heavy rain. Stretches on Bengaluru – Mangaluru national highway at Panjala, Valalu, Udane and Lavathadka in Uppinangady have been flooded. While the flood water level on national highway at Panjala, Valalu and Udane is three feet, the road stretch at Lavathadka is under two feet water.

A 23-year-old youth who had stepped into Kapila river in order to collect sand at Sudegundi near Koppa drowned on Thursday.  With the river in spate, local residents had warned him not to collect sand. However when he entered water, he was washed away by strong current. The deceased is identified as Bhuvith.

Kalaburagi, Mar 7: Congress and JDS MLAs are eagerly waiting to join BJP, said former minister and chairman of Nijasharana Ambigara Choudaiah Abhivradhi Nigama, Baburao Chinchansur, here on Friday.

Speaking at a press conference here, Baburao said if the BJP top brass gives a green signal to include MLAs of other parties, both Congress and JDS would be almost empty. Many leaders, including D K Shivakumar and G Parameshwara, won’t support Siddaramaiah and the former CM will have to find his own way in the coming days, he predicted. He said Congress will not be coming to power in Karnataka for the next 20 years, he said.

Chinchansur thanked Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa for providing Rs 50 crore for Nijasharana Ambigara Choudaiah Abhivrudhi Nigama in the budget. He also said that a delegation will be taken to New Delhi under the leadership of the CM, after the budget session, to pressure the Union government to include Koli community in ST category.

Bengaluru, May 30: A city corporator in Bengaluru was sent into quarantine on Saturday after he tested positive for the coronavirus infection, officials said.

"Yes, I have tested positive," Padarayanapura municipal ward corporator Imran Pasha told some news channels.

The JDS corporator said he would quarantine himself as per the regulations.

The entire area where Pasha lives was cordoned off.

Health workers reached there in an ambulance and gave him a personal protection gear to wear and he was taken to a designated hospital.

Reacting to the development, Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka claimed Pasha hardly paid heed to the COVID-19 regulations.

"He rushes to all those places wherever there are positive cases...," Ashoka told reporters.

Padarayanapura was declared as a containment zone earlier with a few cases coming to the fore.

It was in this area where some policemen and health workers were attacked when they went to quarantine a few primary and secondary contacts of a COVID-19 patient about a month ago.

Following the incident, about 125 people were arrested, and later quarantined after a few of them tested positive.

Bengaluru, Jan 24: After the visit of fact finding committee members to the spot, the Christian community here decided to submit a report to the state government urging to install a 114-ft. statue of Jesus Christ at Kapala Betta in Kanakapura taluk of Ramanagaram district, Congress MLC Ivan D’souza said here on Thursday.

While talking to media, Mr D’souza said the committee would submit the report to Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and Revenue Minster R. Ashok and urge the government to construct the statue at the earliest.

The RSS and other BJP outfits have strongly opposed the installation, following which the government ordered suspension of the work. A few days ago, Kalladka Prabhakar, RSS ideologue, took out a rally in Kanakapura opposing the installation.
