Mangaluru, Sept 1: Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation D V Sadananda Gowda here on Saturday claimed that demonetisation and digital transactions had brought financial discipline leading to growth of gross domestic product.

At the launch of India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) here, Mr. Gowda said his ministry had found that the fears expressed about slowdown in the growth because of demonetisation were unfounded.

In the findings released on Friday, the ministry found the GDP in the first financial quarter at Rs. 33.74 lakh crore, which was 8.2% more than Rs. 31.18 lakh crore in the first quarter of 2017–18. The GDP of the country was expected to grow by 8.5% in the second financial quarter, he said.

“In terms of GDP growth, the country stands at the top among the nations. The neighbouring China has GDP growth of 6.2%,” Mr. Gowda said, and added this had been achieved because of good governance of the National Democratic Alliance government and the financial discipline brought in in the last four years. By preventing interference of middlemen, the government has brought in revenue of Rs. 70,000 crore to the exchequer.

With the intention to take the banking services to the common man, Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the opening of Jan Dhan accounts by which 30 crore accounts were opened across the country and nearly Rs. 1,600 crore was deposited. Beginning of operations of India Post Payments Bank was a step towards financial inclusion of rural citizens, he said.

Post Master General (South Karnataka Region) S. Rajendra Kumar said 31 IPPB branches and 124 access points had started operations in Karnataka.

In Dakshina Kannada, the IPPB branch will be at the Balmatta Post Office in Mangaluru with Mangaluru Head Post Office and post offices at Soorinje, Kuthethur and Katipalla would be the access points.

In another three months, all the post offices in Dakshina Kannada would become access points, he said.

Chikkamagaluru, Feb 21: Alleged Bharatiya Janata Party supporters threw stones at Amulya Leona’s father’s house at Gullagadde near Koppa on Thursday night, after she was charged for making objectionable remarks at a public programme in Bengaluru.

Amulya Leona’s father Wazi said that the incident, which left window panes and doors damaged, took place at around 7.30 p.m. “They are all BJP supporters. They were in a group. I have complained to the police with the names of a few who led the group,” he said.

Three policemen have been deployed at his house since Thursday night.

Amulya Leona, a B.A. student, was charged with sedition after she raised pro-Pakistan slogans at a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Bengaluru.

Mr. Wazi, who owns a two-acre areca plantation and runs a poultry farm, said he condemned the statement made by his daughter and he would not make any attempts to get her bail. “Let the law take its course. I cannot approve of her statement,” he said.

He said he had cautioned his daughter against getting involved in protests. “I told her to complete studies first and later she could fight for poor people. But what she said yesterday is not acceptable. I don’t know what made her so. I hope a probe would bring out who prompted her to make such statements,” he said.

Mr. Wazi said he has been politically active for several years, and had earlier worked for former education minister H.G. Govinde Gowda. He then shifted to the BJP and worked in support of D.N. Jeevaraj, who represented Sringeri constituency last time, and current Udupi-Chickmagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje. “I have worked for the BJP in the past. As Govinde Gowda’s son contested on JD(S) ticket for Sringeri seat, I supported him”, he said.

Meanwhile, a video clip that went viral on Thursday night showed a group of Bajrang Dal activists compelling Mr. Wazi to shout ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’. “I have no hesitation in raising ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ slogans,” said Mr. Wazi, adding that his statement was taken forcibly. “I am a patriot. Many writers, activists and politicians have come to my place over the years,” he said.

"My party MP D Kupendra Reddy is there in the Rajya Sabha as of now and further decisions will be taken by the party. In March 2019, towards the end of the 16th Lok Sabha I had declared that I will not contest any more elections," Deve Gowda added.

Four Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka are about to fall vacant in June this year as two of Congress, one of BJP and JD(S) MPs retire.
