Denial of permission for HDK's padayatra irks Gowda

Hassan, Jul 14: JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda on Thursday expressed his disappointment over Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner denying permission to former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy to take out a padayatra from Mangaluru to Kalladka on July 15, citing law and order problems.gowda

Gowda had announced that Kumaraswamy will take out a padayatra from Mangaluru to Kalladka in Bantwal taluk to create awareness against communal violence.

Speaking to reporters here, Gowda said the padayatra was not planned to gain any political mileage. Participants had been directed not to display any banners or posters, representing any party. Leaders of all parties, religious heads, intellectuals, freedom fighters and others were invited to take part in the march.

The future course of action would decide in a couple of days, he said.

Peace meeting

Commenting on the peace meeting held in Mangaluru, Gowda said it has been convened by Forest Minister B Ramanath Rai, who himself was involved in political mud-slinging. “It has to be seen how fruitful the meeting will be in checking communal violence. If the meeting is successful, it is good for the people and the district. Being a former prime minister, I am aware of the law and order situation and will not take any decision that will affect peace and harmony,” he said.

Kasaragod, Jul 27: Seven persons belonging to two relative-families who attended a funeral recently had been tested positive for Coronavirus on Monday.

Sources said the two families had been to Thavinjal near here for the funeral of a man who died at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital on July 19.

Later, the samples of these seven persons were sent for testing after they developed symptoms of COVID-19, the result of which came out on Monday.

Bengaluru,  Jul 22: Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar on Tuesday said that the state government should give details of the amount it spent on migrants and labourers during the coronavirus crisis if it is transparent.

"The image of Karnataka has come to a very rotten position. We all know that Karnataka has failed in sorting out the problem. Let them (the state government) tell what has been the amount spent on the labour, migrants, food kits on the health department. We want an account (of the expenditure) if they are so transparent," Shivakumar said.

He said that the state government should have approached the hospitals for treating COVID-19 patients and if any hospital refused, a message should have been given that the government would take it over.

He also accused the state government of corruption.

Bengaluru, May 7: A 55-year old woman from Davanagere became the 30th COVID-19 related fatality in Karnataka, where a total number of infections has crossed 700-mark, with eight new positive cases being confirmed, the health department said on Thursday.

The deceased woman was a known case of diabetes and hypertension, she was admitted with a complaint of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and was on a ventilator, the department said in its mid-day situation update.

She died today at a designated hospital in Davanagere, it said.

"Eight new positive cases have been reported from last evening to this noon...

Till date 701 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed. This includes 30 deaths and 363 discharges," the update said.

The eight new cases reported include three from Davangere, indulging the deceased patient; also three from Kalaburagi, and one each from Hirebagewadi in Belagavi district and Bengaluru urban.

While four cases are contacts of patients earlier tested positive, three are with the history of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and one is a SARI case.

Five among eight new cases are women and three are men.
