Denmark Open: PV Sindhu beats world champion Carolina Marin to enter maiden Super Series final

October 18, 2015

New Delhi, Oct 18: Indian badminton ace PV Sindhu continued her sensational form in the 2015 Denmark Open by defeating two-time defending World champion Carolina Marin of Spain in the first semi-final of women's singles in Odense on Saturday.

Denmark

Inside a poorly-lighted Odense Sports Park, twenty-year-old Indian shuttler won the match 21-15, 18-21, 21-17 in one hour 14 minutes to make her first ever Super Series final.

All England champion Marin started the match as the favourite, but the World No.13 Sindhu took the initiative early in the first game, to win it comfortably 21-15 .

However, the Spaniard staged valiant fight back to wrest the second game 21-18, despite a late surge from the Indian shuttler.

In a see-saw third game, Sindhu kept her calm to finish the game and match 21-17, after trailing most of the game to her opponent.

Sindhu won a total of 60 points, seven more than her opponent, in a match which saw 113 points played.

It's worth mentioning that Marin has an impressive record against the Indian players, winning high stake matches against both Sindhu and her more illustrious compatriot Saina Nehwal.

This is Sindhu's second win over the current World champion in fifth attempts. She won their first ever meeting in 2011 Maldives International Challenge.

The two-time World Championships bronze medallist Sindhu will play the winner of second semi-final between third rank Sung Ji Hyun of Korea and sixth rank Li Xuerui of China in tomorrow's final.

Prakash Padukone (in 1980) and Saina Nehwal (in 2012) had previously won this prestigious tournament for India.

Yesterday, Sindhu defeated former World No.1 Chinese Wang Yihan in straight games to book her semi-final spot in the Super Series Premier event.

World number one Nehwal's campaign ended on Thursday after losing to Minatsu Mitani 15-21, 13-21 in straight games in the second round.

New Delhi, Jan 16: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday condoled the demise of India's super cricket fan, 87-year-old Charulata Patel.

"#TeamIndia's Superfan Charulata Patel Ji will always remain in our hearts and her passion for the game will keep motivating us. May her soul rest in peace," BCCI tweeted.

Patel had made herself a household name after turning up for India's matches during the 2019 World Cup.

She went on to storm social media after she was seen cheering for the Men in Blue during their World Cup clash against Bangladesh.

After the match, the entire Indian side went to meet Patel and both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were seen meeting the octogenarian fan.

"I am a very religious person and have so much trust in God. So, when I pray, it comes true and I am saying that India is going to get the World Cup, definitely," Patel had told ANI during the World Cup.

The 87-year old had caught everyone's eyes when she was ardently cheering for the Indian team when they were batting.

Patel had also stated that she was there in the stadium when India lifted their first World Cup, back in 1983, under the leadership of former cricket Kapil Dev.

"I have been there. When they won the World Cup, I was so proud, I started dancing. And today also, I told my granddaughter that when India is going to defeat Bangladesh, I am going to dance," she had said.

"I have been watching cricket for decades. When I was in Africa, I used to watch it, then I came to this country in 1975. Here I had work because of which I did not get time to watch but I used to watch it on TV. But nowadays as I am not working, so I have the interest and I am very lucky that I get a chance to watch cricket," she added.
