'Depressed' Luke Pomersbach quits cricket

June 6, 2014

Luke quitsMumbai, Jun 6: Depression and mental health issues have cut short the career of one more cricketer. Left-handed opening batsman Luke Pomersbach of Australia, only 29, chose to quit playing on Thursday to deal with his illness.

Pomersbach, who played one Twenty20 International for Australia in 2007-08, was an explosive batsman, more suited for the limited-overs format. Originally from Western Australia, he opted to play for Queensland in the Australian domestic scene for the last two seasons.

Pomersbach, in a statement, said: "I really appreciate all the help and support that I have received from Queensland Cricket over the past three years and especially over the past couple of months leading up to this difficult decision to leave professional cricket so that I can put all my efforts into getting better and making a full recovery."

The Indian cricket fans will remember Pomersbach for his alleged molestation of an American woman that led to his arrest in New Delhi during the 2012 edition of Indian Premier League during which he was part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore. The RCB franchise backed Pomersbach throughout the case and subsequently the complaint against the Australian was withdrawn. Though Pomersbach was not retained by RCB after the incident, he did reappear in the IPL, playing three matches for Kings XI Punjab in 2013.

Pomersbach played for KXIP in 2008, 2009 and 2013 while he was part of the RCB set-up in 2011 and 2012, having played only five matches in the first year and none the next. In the first edition of IPL, Pomersbach averaged an unbelievable 152.00, having stayed unbeaten on four occasions out of the five times he batted. Though he did not set the stage afire, he did score a 50-ball 79 not out against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede, his team winning by a solitary run in 2008.

For those who know Pomersbach closely, he comes across a fully committed player, cordial with his team-mates and support staff and someone who wanted to excel in his game.

Pomersbach joins a list of cricketers who had to cut short their career due to depression. Last year end, England batsman Jonathan Trott left the Ashes tour Down Under after the first Test due to "stress-related issues".

Former England opener Marcus Trescothick returned home just before the first Test against India in Nagpur in 2006 due to "clinical depression". Trescothick was included for the Ashes series in Australia later that year but a recurrence of his "illness" forced him to catch a flight back home before the Tests began. However, Trescothick was not completely out of cricket, turning out for his county Somerset in English competitions, doing what he knows best – scoring runs.

New Delhi, Jun 2: Manchester United's Paul Pogba on Monday paid tribute to George Floyd, stressing that violent acts of racism can no longer be tolerated and they have to stop.

Pogba took to Instagram to write: "During the past few days I have thought a lot about how to express my feelings about what happened in Minneapolis. I felt anger, pity, hatred, indignation, pain, sadness."

"Sadness for George and for all black people who suffer from racism Every day! Whether in football, at work, at school, Anywhere! This has to stop, once and for all! Not tomorrow or the next day, it has to end today! Violent acts of racism can no longer be tolerated," he added.

Protests erupted in Minneapolis and other US cities on Tuesday after Floyd, an African-American man, died following his arrest by the four officers.

A viral video showed a police officer, Derek Chauvin, pinning 46-year-old Floyd to the ground with his knee on his neck for nearly eight minutes. Floyd died at a local hospital shortly thereafter.

The four police officers were fired. Chauvin was also charged with murder and manslaughter, according to Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.

New Delhi, Mar 12: No foreign player will be available for this year's IPL till April 15 due to visa restrictions imposed by the government to contain the novel coronavirus threat, a top BCCI source told PTI on Thursday, casting fresh doubts on the fate of the event.

"The foreign players who play in the IPL come under the Business Visa category. As per the government's directive, they can't come till April 15," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The government issued fresh advisory with a ban on all existing foreign visas, except a few categories like diplomatic and employment, till April 15 in the wake of new positive cases of novel coronavirus in the country.

India has reported 60 positive cases in the outbreak which has led to over 4,000 deaths globally.

The fate of the IPL itself will be decided on March 14 at the event's Governing Council meeting in Mumbai. "All decisions will be taken by the GC in Mumbai," the source said.

Having the IPL, starting March 29, played in empty stadiums is an option being explored.

New Delhi, Jun 13: West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has said that wicket-keeper batsman MS Dhoni is the biggest superstar in cricket and is one of the easiest guys to interact with.

Bravo was doing an Instagram live chat with former Zimbabwe pacer Pommie Mbangwa and it was then that the all-rounder was asked to talk about his stint with Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

"I think a lot of credit for CSK's success has to be given to Dhoni and Fleming, obviously the owners, they trust both Fleming and Dhoni, so there is no outside interference when it comes to decision making, both are very big students of the game, players love MS and it's an environment and franchise that allows you to be you," Bravo told Mbangwa during the chat.

"MS Dhoni is the biggest superstar in cricket and in our team. He was one of the easiest people to interact with, outside of the cricket field, he is like playing video games, his door is open at all times, whenever you talk about the biggest superstar and then you think a person like Dhoni is the most humble of them all. CSK is a special team and we have the most loyal fans," he added.

Bravo has been with the CSK since 2011. He has played a total of 104 matches for the franchise, picking up 121 wickets.

The all-rounder has also managed to win the Purple Cap (most wickets in IPL) two times (2013 and 2015).

CSK has won the IPL thrice (2010, 2011 and 2018) and all the titles have come under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

Thirty-eight-year-old Dhoni has been currently enjoying some time away from the game. He last played competitive cricket during the 2019 World Cup.

Dhoni had to face criticism for his slow batting approach during India's matches in the high-profile game.

This year, Dhoni did not find a place for himself in the BCCI's centrally contracted players list.

The board had released the list of central contract list of players for the period from October 2019 to September 2020.

Dhoni is the only captain to win all major ICC trophies (50-over World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy).

Under his leadership, India also managed to attain the number one ranking in Test cricket.

He would have been leading the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) if the Indian Premier League (IPL) had commenced from March 29.

However, the tournament has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
