Bengaluru, Feb 15: A young software engineer hailing from north Indian and working for IT services company Mphasis in Bengaluru jumped to death from his 13th-floor office cafeteria at Bagmane MTB Techpark, Mahadevapura Ring Road yesterday.
31-year-old Amlan Barman, a resident of Mahadevapura and from Assam, was said to be depressed over health issues. The incident took place during the lunch hour. Amlan’s colleagues were having lunch, when he jumped out of the window at 1.45pm, police said.
Police said Amlan was under treatment for epilepsy and suspect he might have taken the extreme step for the same reason. His mother Shikha Barman also suspected her son’s health complications may have driven him to kill himself. He sustained severe injuries and died instantly.
Preliminary investigation revealed Amlan had taken an overdose of tablets prescribed for epilepsy on Monday night and had to be admitted to a private hospital. He was on leave for two days and returned to work on Thursday morning.
“His colleagues said Amlan looked dull and depressed in the morning before he went to the cafeteria and jumped from a window,” a police officer said.
Amlan was born in Assam and later moved to Meghalaya and West Bengal, where he completed his education. He shifted to Bengaluru along with his mother a year ago after getting a job with Mphasis. He hadn’t left any suicide note, police said.
