The accused has been identified as Shareef, who is also a Dargah devotee, but not associated with any group. It is learnt that he destroyed the headstones placed over the graves of Late UT Fareed and Naseema Fareed, the parents of local Mr Khader, after juma Namaz.

Police sources said that Shareef himself surrendered to the police and confessed to the crime hours after desecrating the graves. Sources said that he was let off by police with a warning as Mr Khader's family did not file any complaint.

The desecration took place a day after two groups of people clashed on the Dargah premises over the appointment to the post of president of managing committee of mosque and Dargah.

A new committee was constituted duly electing Haji Abdul Rashid as president of the dargah committee on Tuesday. However, the name of Bukhari was announced by another group for the post the same evening, leading to a tiff within the community.

The matter got settled with police intervention giving recognition to the duly elected committee. Again the issue erupted on Thursday evening with supporters of both groups engaging in clashes.

Meanwhile, the newly elected president has condemned the desecration of the graves of the parents of Mr Khader. He said that Late UT Fareed, had greatly contributed towards the development of Dargah during his tenure as the MLA.

Bengaluru, Jan 13: Right-wing organisations, along with BJP and RSS workers, will take out a massive padayatra in Kanakapura on Monday, protesting against the construction of a Jesus Christ statue.

The event organised by the Hindu Jagarana Vedike (HJV) will witness a rally from the Aiyappa temple in Kanakapura to the taluk panchayat office, where a memorandum will be submitted to the authorities following a public meeting.

Ahead of the event, Congress leader D K Shivakumar, in a video message released on Sunday, urged the people of Kanakapura to maintain calm. The former minister cast apprehensions over the event scheduled on Monday and said provocative statements may be made to disturb peace and harmony in Kanakapura.

Shivakumar, who represents the Kanakapura constituency, said the motive of the meeting by the leaders and workers of the BJP and the RSS, along with seers of mutts, was to defame his constituency.

“If any remarks are made against me, my brother (D K Suresh) or people of different faiths in Kanakapura constituency, do not be provoked,” he urged.

“Members of the (Christian) community have prayed at the site for 400 years and are trying to install a statue of Jesus Christ. I have helped the community like I aided hundreds of temples and educational institutions,” he said.

Appealing to maintain peace, Shivakumar said that BJP and RSS leaders were free to petition anybody.

The BJP and right-wing organisations have objected to the construction of the statue at Kapala Betta, with the BJP government ordering a probe into how road, power supply and other facilities were provided to the hill. Recently, Christian leaders had petitioned Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to remove any impediments to the construction of the statue.

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 7: Kerala government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday has come under the spotlight for depicting the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on the cover of the state finance budget 2020-21 document.

Issuing clarification on the same, Issac justified that it is a political statement.

"Definitely, it is a political statement, the cover of my budget speech. It is a painting by a Malayalam artist of Mahatma Gandhi's murder scene. We are sending out a message that we will not forget who murdered Gandhi."

He also alleged that history is being re-written and National Register of Citizens (NRC) is being used to divide the country on communal lines.

"This is important at the times when history is being re-written. There is an attempt to erase some popular memories and use NRC to divide the population on communal lines. Kerala will stand united."

NRC is an official record of those people who are legal citizens of India. The dossier includes demographic information about all those individuals who qualify as citizens of India as per the Citizenship Act, 1955.

The register was first prepared after the 1951 Census of India and since then it has not been updated until recently.
