Despite defeated by Sonia in Ballari, Sushma strengthened BJP in Karnataka

Newsroom, Aug 7: Bharatiya Janata Party stalwart and former external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, who passed away last night, had a strong Karnataka connection. She had played a key role in the rise of the saffron party in this south Indian state. 

It all started in 1999, when Sonia Gandhi contested the Lok Sabha election. She filed her nomination from two constituencies—Ballari in Karnataka, and the Gandhi family seat of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. The BJP fielded Swaraj, the in-house orator and poster child for the “adarsh bharatiya nari"—an ideal Indian woman. The contest was a fiery one and soon became a battle between the ‘swadeshi beti’ and ‘videshi bahu’ thanks to the media.

Even though Swara miserably lost the battle, her rigorous campaign helped the saffron party to strengthen presence in Karnataka. 

Sushma’s campaign laid the foundation for a tectonic shift as the BJP breached the Congress citadel in 2004. Her campaign was managed by the three Reddy brothers. 

For nearly 15 years since 1999, Sushma had made it a point to celebrate Varamahalakshmi festival every year in Ballari. When BJP came to power in Karnataka, she became the political mother of Reddy brothers of Ballari. However, this relationship did not last long.

Mangaluru, May 23: Domestic flight services will resume from Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) from May 25 as per the instructions of Union Civil Aviation Ministry. Six Indigo and SpiceJet flights will be operated from Mangaluru to Bengaluru, Mumbai and Chennai.

Air-India is yet to finalise its schedule, airport sources said. Three Indigo flights will depart from Mangaluru to Bengaluru, Mumbai and Chennai and three flights of SpiceJet will leave for Bengaluru and Mumbai on May 25.

SpiceJet flight will take off from Bengaluru to Mangaluru at 8.30 am and7 pm while Indigo will take off from Mangaluru to Bengaluru at 5.55 pm. SpiceJet flight will take off from Mangaluru at 10.20 am and 9.35 pm while Indigo will depart at 7.30 pm.

From Mumbai, Spice Jet flight will take off at 7.05 am and Indigo at 9.30 am. The Mangaluru-Mumbai SpiceJet flight will take off at 9.05 am and Indigo at 11.40 am. Indigo flight will depart from Chennai to Mangaluru at 5.45 pm and from Mangaluru to Chennai at 8.05 am.

New Delhi, Jul 25: Nearly a year after Cafe Coffee Day founder V.G. Siddhartha's death, the probe committee appointed by the Board of Coffee Day Enterprises Ltd (CDEL) has given a virtual clean chit to private equity investors and the Income Tax Department who were named in his last letter.
The investigation report noted that Siddhartha may have felt "aversive behavioural stimulus" due to persistent reminders from the PE investors and other lenders.

"However, such reminders and follow-ups by the PE investors and lenders are not something which are beyond normal industry practices and we believe that PE investors were acting as per accepted legal and business norms," said that report.

It further said that the investigators were not provided with any documentary evidence to show any "advertent or inadvertent harassment" from the Income Tax Department.

It however, said that the financial records suggest a serious liquidity crunch which may have arisen due to the attachment of Mindtree shares by the IT Department.

Further, the probe revealed that MACEL, a private firm of Siddhartha, owes Rs 2,693 crore to Coffee Day Enterprises, which the report says, "needs to be addressed".

The Cafe Coffee Day founder's body was fished out of the Netravathi river in Karnataka by a group of fishermen on July 31 last year, a day after he went missing.

His last note raised several questions about the role of investors, and tax officials.

He had written: "Tremendous pressure from other lenders lead to me succumbing to the situation. There was a lot of harassment from the previous DG Income Tax in the form of attaching our shares on two separate occasions to block our Mindtree deal and then taking possession of our Coffee Day shares, although the revised returns have been filed by us. This was very unfair and has led to a serious liquidity crunch."

The massive shock to the industry and the country also led the government to assure that tax officials would not harass businessmen and the situation would improve.

Mangaluru/Udupi, Aug 2: The twin coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi witnessed sporadic movement of vehicles and relatively less commercial activities today in spite of the withdrawal of ‘Sunday lockdown’ by the state government. 

After the central government announced guidelines under Unlock 3.0, the Karnataka government has removed the complete lockdown concept on Sundays and done away with the night curfews too. So from today (August 2), there will be no lockdown on Sundays.

KSRTC operated its buses as usually. However, compared to other days, today the number of private and city buses on the roads in Dakshina Kannada was limited. 

In Udupi, city buses remained off the roads as the number of passengers was less. However, KSRTC and NARM buses were seen transporting passengers.

In containment zones ban on movement of people will continue till August 31 in Udupi. The Santhekatte market used to function on Saturdays, as there was Sunday lockdown on earlier Sundays. Now the market will be open on Sundays only.
