Speaking to reporters after visiting KRS?in Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya district, Gowda urged the state government to take measures for ensuring supply of sufficient drinking water to Mandya, Mysuru and Bengaluru. He also demanded the government to compensate the farmers for crop loss. “It is surprising that the court has passed the order when the state is facing acute shortage of drinking water. The main petition is coming up for hearing before the court on October 18 and if we fail to convince the court, the situation will become worse for Karnataka,” Gowda said.

He said that he had explained to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the water-sharing formula and the prevailing drought in Karnataka. “I will meet the prime minister again with more facts to convince him. The state will not get justice by protesting against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. We should come up with a strategy to fight the issue.”

Gowda said that he would conduct an aerial survey of Mettur dam in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. The former prime minister, who visited Kabini dam in HD?Kote taluk of Mysuru district said that wild animals in Bandipur and other forests in the vicinity depend on Kabini dam for drinking water and they would die if they don’t get water. Gowda also took stock of the water level in Hemavathy reservoir.

Protests continue Protests against release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu continued in Mandya on Sunday also, reports DHNS from Mandya. However, protesters blocked roads only for a short duration. While traffic resumed on Mysuru-Bengaluru highway, the KSRTC?had diverted most of its buses on Malavalli-Kanakapura road.

New Delhi, Jun 18: Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday removed Sanjay Jha as a party spokesperson, days after he wrote a newspaper article criticising the party. She also approved the appointment of Abhishek Dutt and Sadhna Bharti as national media panelists for the Congress.

"Congress president has also approved that Sanjay Jha be dropped as AICC spokesperson with immediate effect," the party said in an official statement.

In the article published a few days ago, Mr Jha had said, "The Congress has demonstrated extraordinary lassitude, and its lackadaisical attitude towards its own political obsolescence is baffling..."

"I would like to call a spade a spade here and a shovel: there has been no serious effort to get the party up and running with any sense of urgency," he had said in the article in a national newspaper.

"There are many in the party who cannot comprehend this perceptible listlessness. For someone like me, for instance, permanently wedded to Gandhian philosophy and Nehruvian outlook that defines the Congress, it is dismaying to see its painful disintegration," he had said.

Ahmedabad, May 12: The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday declared state BJP minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama's election in 2017 as void on grounds of malpractice and manipulation.

Justice Paresh Upadhyay cancelled Bhupendrasinh Chudasama's election in an order passed on a petition filed by Congress candidate Ashwin Rathod, challenging the BJP leader's victory from Dholka constituency by a margin of 327 votes in the 2017 Gujarat Assembly polls.

In his election petition, Ashwin Rathod alleged that Bhupendrasinh Chudasama indulged in "corrupt practice and breach of many of the mandatory instructions of the Election Commission, at various stages of the election process, more particularly at the time of counting of votes".

Bhupendrasinh Chudasama currently holds charge of the education, law and justice, legislative and parliamentary affairs, and some other departments in the Vijay Rupani government.
