Devendra Jhajharia recalls his childhood when kids maintained distance

September 15, 2016

New Delhi, Sep 15: India's only double gold medallist Devendra Jhajharia's grit and resilience is second to none. As an eight-year-old, the athlete's left arm had to be amputated after he got electrocuted. Having a natural flair for sports, the youngster hit the local playground as soon as he recovered from the operation. But things were no longer the same.

The man who is now the toast of the nation didn't find any kid who was interested in playing with a handicapped child. The kids made it clear that they didn't have a place for him in their team.

"You know how kids are. I had lost my arm and no one wanted to play with me. No one wanted me in their team. 'Bhaiya, hum aapko nahi khila sakte' (Sorry, we can't let you play with us), I was told on many occasions," Devendra said, recalling his childhood.

Most people would have backed out facing such a harrowing experience. But Devendra was not one of them. "It made me stronger. Every time they told me that I could not play with them, I became even more resolute," the javelin thrower said.

"After seeing that I was not going to back out, they finally included me."

Devendra won India's fourth Gold in the history of Paralympics on Tuesday with a throw of 63.97 metres in the F46 javelin event at the Olympic Stadium (Engenhao). Chunliang of China and Dinesh Priyantha Herath of Sriland bagged the silver and bronze medal respectively in the same event.

12-YEAR WAIT

The first time he bagged the yellow metal was in the 2004 Athens Paralympics with a throw of 62.15 metres.

"Things were much different back then. There was hardly any support and now with TOP scheme and Sports Authority of India's support things have changed for the better," he said.

The 2013 IPC World Athletics silver medallist had to wait 12 years for a second shot at the Olympics after his Athens Triumph as his event did not feature in the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Games.

"It was like waiting for the Maha Kumbh (a Hindu religious gathering that takes place in India once in 12 years). I knew that my event was not there at the Beijing Paralympics, but I kept training hoping that I would get a shot at London. Only in 2010, I got to know that the event was scrapped off from London too," he said.

TRAINING IN FINLAND

Devendra went for a three month-stint to Finland under the TOP scheme this time and believes it came as huge boost to his training ahead of the Games.

"I received a lot of support this time. I also give credit to my coach Sunil Tawar. I trained for almost seven hours a day for the Games," he said.

During his stint he also met Kenyan thrower Julius Yego, who became an internet-sensation after he revealed how he learnt the art of javelin throwing solely from YouTube videos as he couldn't afford a coach. Devendra said he was mighty impressed and inspired after training with Yego. "I will definitely call him soon," said the Arjuna and Padama Shri awardee.

Mumbai, Jan 5: India captain Virat Kohli has refrained from making any comments on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), without gaining full knowledge on the sensitive subject.

The CAA will grant Indian nationality to people belonging to minority communities -- Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians -- in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan after six years of residence in India instead of 12, even if they don't possess any proper document.

In 2016, Kohli had termed demonetisation as the "greatest move in history of Indian politics", which met with sharp criticism from a lot of quarters, with people questioning his knowledge on the subject.

With Guwahati witnessing massive protests against the CAA till some days back, Kohli was asked about it and the Indian skipper weighed his words carefully.

"On the issue, I do not want to be irresponsible and speak on something that has, you know, radical opinions both sides. I need to have total information, total knowledge of what it means and what is going on and then be responsible to give my opinion on it," Kohli said ahead of India's first T20 International against Sri Lanka.

The skipper made it clear that he will not like to get embroiled in a controversy by commenting on a subject that he is not well aware of.

"Because you can say one thing and then someone can say another thing. So, I would not like to get involved in something that I don't have total knowledge of and it's not going to be responsible on my part to comment on it." However Kohli on his part was happy with the security arrangements and felt that the city is "absolutely safe".

"The city is absolutely safe. We didn't see any problems on the roads," Kohli said, giving his thumbs-up for the match at the Barsapara Stadium.

The Assam Cricket Association is using this match as a "curtain-raiser" ahead of their maiden IPL match this season as Rajasthan Royals have adopted this venue.

There has been deployment of Rapid Action Force for the teams and ACA secretary Devajit Saikia has said the spectators will not even be allowed to bring along handkerchiefs and towels on the match-day as the traditional Assamese scarf was used for protests against CAA.

May 14: Veteran South Africa batsman Faf du Plessis has proposed a two-week isolation period for players before and after the T20 World Cup as a way to stage the event as per schedule later this year.

Like other sports, cricketing action too has come to a complete halt due to the coronavirus pandemic. The fate of the T20 World Cup to be held in Australia in October-November is shrouded in uncertainty.

Talking to Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Iqbal, du Plessis said travel was going to be an issue despite Australia being less affected by the deadly contagion.

"I am not sure... reading that travelling is going to be an issue for lot of countries and they are talking about December or January. Even if Australia is not affected like other countries, to get people from Bangladesh, South Africa or India where there is more danger, obviously it's a health risk to them," du Plessis said.

"But you can go in before the tournament (for) two weeks isolation and then play the tournament and afterwards two weeks isolation," said the former captain.

Several countries across the globe, including South Africa, Australia and India, have travel restrictions in place and the veteran Proteas batsman joked travelling by boat is not an option.

"But I don't know when South Africa will open their travel ban because we can't go there like old days on boats," du Plessis said.

In March, South Africa's ODI series against India was called off after the first match in view of the pandemic.

The coronavirus outbreak, which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan, has infected more than 44 lakh people worldwide while causing close to 3 lakh deaths.

Silverstone, Aug 2: Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton on Sunday won his seventh British Grand Prix title after a dramatic last-lap at the Silverstone Circuit.

Hamilton and teammate Valtteri Bottas were at the first and second spot respectively until tyre drama struck.

Second-placed man Bottas was the first to suffer as his tyre deflated on lap 50, resulting in 11th place finish. Hamilton also suffered a similar issue before the final few seconds of the race.

However, with Max Verstappen having opted to pit a few laps from the end to try and claim the fastest lap, Hamilton had enough time in hand to just cross the line first, five seconds ahead of Verstappen and the third-placed Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.

McLaren's Carlos Sainz had been set to finish fourth, but his own last lap tyre issue saw him eventually come home P13, allowing Renault's Daniel Ricciardo to claim fourth, following a late pass on the sister McLaren of Lando Norris.

Renault's Esteban Ocon finished sixth, having enjoyed a race-long battle with Lance Stroll's Racing Point, with Pierre Gasly having enjoyed a fine race to finish seventh for AlphaTauri.

Alex Albon finished eighth for Red Bull, having recovered from a lap 1 tussle with the Haas of Kevin Magnussen that saw him fall to last, while Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel rounded out the top 10, Vettel holding off a late charge form the recovering Mercedes of Bottas.
