Did JD(S) reach secret pact with BJP to defeat Siddaramaiah, his son in 2018 polls?

Bengaluru, Apr 6: After pre-poll surveys predicted clear majority for Congress under the leadership of chief minister Siddaramaiah in Karnataka in 2018, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (Secular) appeared to have forged a secret alliance to defeat him and his son in Chamundeshwari and Varuna Assembly segments respectively.

If sources are to be believed, JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda and his son H D Kumaraswamy, who intend to bring an end to the prolonged political career of Siddaramaiah, are masterminds behind such a secret pact.

A series of secret meetings between three friends-turned-enemies of Siddaramaiah (V Srinivas Prasad of BJP and A H Vishwanath and G T Devegowda of JD-S) has also given rise to the speculation of clandestine agreement between two parties.

Political pundits predict that it is inevitable for the leaders of the BJP and the JD(S) to join hands to ensure the defeat of Siddaramaiah. While Siddaramaiah is preparing to contest from Chamundeshwari, his son, Dr Yathindra is likely to be fielded from Varuna by the Congress party. Devegowda would take on Siddaramaiah and BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa's son B Y Vijayendra would contest against Dr Yathindra.

Vishwanath and Prasad quit the Congress party last year, accusing Siddaramaiah of ill-treating them. Both have declared that their aim is to ensure the defeat of Siddaramaiah in the upcoming election.

Although, the leaders of both the BJP and the JD(S) have been claiming that they will not form an alliance under any circumstance, it has become inevitable for them to enter into an understanding to defeat their common foe. Hence, the BJP may field a weak candidate in Chamundeshwari. The JD(S) may reciprocate with a similar candidate in Varuna, say analysts.

Sensing trouble, Siddaramaiah, who is in a Catch-22 situation after opting for Chamundeshwari, toured several villages under the constituency, trying to woo the voters. During the course, he also studied the mindset of the voters.

The situation is similar in Varuna Assembly constituency also, which was formed in 2008. Siddaramaiah had won from Varuna in the 2008 and 2013 polls.

Mangaluru, May 8: After continuous pressure on Union government from Karnataka NRI Forum- UAE, the first special flight carrying 180 Kannadigas who stranded at UAE due to Covid-19 pandemic will fly from Dubai to Mangaluru on May 14.

The special flight will take off from Dubai at 4.10 p.m. UAE time to reach Mangaluru at 9.10 pm IST on May 14. Earlier it was reported that the flight will operate on May 12. However, sources of Mangaluru International Airport and Air India today confirmed that first flight will be on May 14.

The state government has directed Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts authority to quarantine all passengers once they reach.

All Kannadigas will be given permission to travel back home only after they test negative in Covid test at Dubai airport.

In fact, Karnataka was missing in the list of states to receive special flights when Ministry of External Affairs arranged them to bring stranded Indians at UAE. Special flights were arranged only to Kerala and Tamil Nadu people stranded at UAE in the first stage.

Thanks to Karnataka NRI Forum of UAE which opened helpline (https://uaekannadahelpline.club) to seek assistance to Kannadigas, nearly 2000 Kannadigas have registered for assistance in which 127 pregnant women, 27 senior citizens, 700 people who have lost jobs aftermath of coronavirus sought assistance from NRI forum.

After providing food and shelter to Kannadigas who lost jobs at UAE since March 2020, NRI forum put pressure on both state and Centre to arrange special flights to send them to home.

The NRI Forum has approached Indian Consulate at UAE and chief minister BS Yediyurappa to evacuate Kannadigas, but got no response. Following this, Karnataka NRI Forum President Praveen Shetty approached Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers DV Sadananda Gowda for help. Gowda immediately responded the call and he spoke to MEE to arrange special flight for Kannadigas as well.

Indian government has promised to arrange special flight to Mangaluru or Bengaluru by next week to bring Kannadigas.

Comparing to other Indian States, Karnataka has the highest number of its people working in UAE. Around 1.25 lakhs Kannadigas are working in UAE in which majority are working classes. Due to Covid-19 pandemic thousands of workers have lost jobs, Mr. Shetty explained.

"Indian government had arranged special flights from US, UK, Singapur and other countries to bring back Indians, but excluded UAE in the list. Actually, lakhs of Indians are working in UAE as labourers and in odd jobs, the government should have given first priority to bring labourers rather rich one", he opined.

"BJP has 27 MPs from Karnataka. We continuously requested all BJP MPs and state government but none of them came to our help. Thanks to Mr Gowda for his timely intervention to bring stranded Kannadigas", Mr Shetty said.

Mangaluru, Feb 18: Within days after Kambala racer Srinivasa Gowda emerged a national hero, another Kambala racer Nishant Shetty has grabbed headlines.

Nishant Shetty from Bajagoli Jogibettu reportedly broke Gowda’s record at the Venoor Kambala on Sunday. Shetty recorded 143m in 13.68 seconds. If calculated for 100m he clocks it in 9.51 seconds. His speed is faster than Gowda who clocked 9.55 seconds.

According to Kambala organisers, with Shetty’s feat, four participants have joined the elite club of racers who have completed the 100 metres in less than ten seconds.

They are Iruvathur Anand (9.57 secs), Akkeri Suresh Shetty (9.57 secs), Srinivas Gowda (9.55 secs) and Nishant Shetty (9.51 secs). Anand and Suresh Shetty had participated in the same Venoor Kambala where Nishant emerged first.

Kambala is an annual race held in Karnataka where people sprint 143m through paddy fields with the buffaloes. During the race, the racers try to bring the buffaloes under control by holding their reins tight and beating them, making it amply clear that the animal plays an equally important role in achieving the timing. Traditionally, it is sponsored by local Tuluva landlords and households in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.
