Mangaluru, Jul 26: Frankly responding to media persons query on reports of his son creating ruckus in public, Congress leader and minister B Ramanath Rai said that no one was above the law.

rai copy“Unlike other politicians I don't defend my son if he commits any mistake or crime,” Mr Rai said adding that the law of the land should apply to his son if he has committed a mistake.

He also clarified that he is not responsible for his son's mistake as it is difficult to control grown up children.

Cited Union minister DV Sadananda Gowda's son Karthik's sex with model case, Mr Rai said: “Some people pressured me to hold a protest, but I did not since I know it's difficult to keep a tab on what your children are doing after they cross a certain age."

He said once a person approached him claiming he had a recommendation letter from his (Rai's son) for a transfer. "I sent him away, saying I would transfer him to a place where there is no water,'' he added.

On Sunday, Mr Rai's son Deepu Rai and two of his friends -- Tejas and Ganesh -- were partying in their car parked on a private road leading to the house of former Madikeri gram panchayat president Mandamada Tejappa. Disturbed by the loud music and shouting, Tejappa and neighbours asked the trio to leave the place.

Taking offence, the trio entered into an argument with the public, asking them who they were to question them. Later, angry villagers reportedly thrashed the trio. At Srimangala police station, police made both groups strike a compromise and settled the case by taking written undertakings from both.

Bengaluru, Jun 11: A love triangle took a violent turn when a final-year engineering student was assaulted by both her current and former lovers. She's now battling for her life in the ICU, police said.

For the 22-year-old woman, who lives in Sidedahalli, it was a case of fast-changing relationships. She broke up with a fellow student Babith, 21, a few months ago after having dated him for four years. Four months ago, she started seeing another collegemate named Rahul, 22, and everything seemed fine.

On June 7, she went to Rahul's house, ostensibly for his birthday party, after informing her parents. Babith got wind of it and barged into Rahul's house. The trio got into an argument, and Rahul abused and assaulted her.

The woman decided to leave him, and went with Babith to his house in Chikkabanavara, North Bengaluru. But things didn't end there. Babith picked an argument with her. Things became so bad that he attacked her with a helmet.

He then panicked and called her parents, asking them to take her home. When her parents arrived, they found only Babith, his mother and sister in the house. Babith's family directed them to a bedroom where she was lying motionless, with her face being badly wounded.

When her parents demanded to know what had happened, nobody responded. They took her to a hospital where her condition remains serious. A while later, Babith came to the hospital and gave her parents the key of her scooter. He told them what had happened and allegedly warned them against filing a police complaint.

Her mother, however, filed a complaint with the jurisdictional Soladevanahalli police. According to her, Babith had fought with her daughter at their house for not taking his phone calls six months ago.

Shashikumar N, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), said both the men had been arrested and that further investigations are underway.

Bengaluru, May 25: After facing flak from the opposition for skipping quarantine rules to contain COVID-19 spread, Union Minister Sadananda Gowda on Monday said there are certain exemption clauses for those who hold certain responsible posts, adding that he cannot go under quarantine as he has to ensure medical supply in every part of the country.

"Guidelines are applicable to all citizens, but there are certain exemption clauses, for those who hold certain responsible posts," Gowda told media on being asked about allegations by opposition parties that he did not go to required institutional quarantine after domestic air travel from Delhi to Bengaluru.

"I am a Minister and I am heading Pharmaceutical Ministry. If the supply of medicines and other things is not proper then what doctors can do for patients, is it not a failure of government? It' is my responsibility to ensure the supply of medicines to each corner of the country," he said.

Earlier in the day, the BJP MP, who arrived at Bengaluru airport from Delhi and straight away got into his car and drove to his residence. He skipped the institutional quarantine measures as set by the Central government.

Bengaluru, Apr 10: Renowned ophthalmologist and Narayana Nethralaya Chairman Dr K Bhujang Shetty today advised those wearing contact lenses to switch to eyeglasses as a preventive measure.

“Though the facial mask is mandatory as a preventive measure against the dreaded Coronavirus, not many know that the virus can also enter the body through eyes. Wearing glasses or spectacles reduces the spread of the virus,” Dr Bhujang Shetty said.

Although it is more likely that people may catch Coronavirus infections through mouth and nose, there are chances of the virus also entering through eyes. “In a day, humans tend to touch their face and eyes almost 20 times an hour knowingly or unknowingly. Users of contact lenses end up touching their eyes and face frequently, increasing the risk of infections. Therefore, it is advisable that they switch to eyeglasses until the situation improves”, according to a release here on Friday.
