'Dilwale' takes edge over 'Bajirao' with 'excellent' opening

Mumbai, Dec 18: As the big Bollywood clash between "Dilwale" and "Bajirao Mastani" unfolded today at theatres across the country amid protests by right-wing outfits, early trends indicate that the Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol starrer is leading with a better opening at the box office.maxresdefault

Directed by Rohit Shetty, "Dilwale" reunites the iconic pair of Shah Rukh-Kajol after five years and is a commercial potboiler with a dose of romance, comedy and action.

While "Bajirao Mastani", starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, is a historical romance saga directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

"'Dilwale' has opened to an occupancy of 70 per cent while 'Bajirao Mastani' opened at 30 per cent. The opening day collection for 'Dilwale' will be somewhere around Rs 21-22 crore. 'Bajirao' might settle for a Rs 10-12 crore opening day figure," Girish Wankhede, of production-distribution company Entity One, told PTI.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said the opening of "Dilwale", which also stars Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon, will be within the range of "very good to excellent."

"'Dilwale' has opened better. It is too early to give a number now but it is in the range of very good to excellent. 'Bajirao Mastani' is slightly slow and is within the range of ordinary to good."

"Bajirao Mastani" narrates the love story of the Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao I and his second wife Mastani. While Ranveer and Deepika play the eponymous roles, Priyanka is seen playing Bajirao's first wife Kashibai.

Adarsh, however, feels word of mouth for the Ranveer-Deepika starrer is very positive which might help the film.

"The word of mouth for 'Bajirao Mastani' is very strong, it will gain momentum by the evening shows, but the masses are loving 'Dilwale'. Both the films will continue to do well as we have Christmas weekend followed by New Year. It is an open ground."

Manoj Desai, exhibitor and owner of G7 Cinemas here, said both the films are doing well in his properties despite their different genres.

"Both 'Dilwale' and 'Bajirao Mastani' opened to 100 per cent occupancy here. The shows are full and the audience response looks very promising as of now."

Adarsh feels the clash has hampered the screen count of both the movies, apart from dividing the audience.

"Not only the audience gets divided because of the clash but also the screen and show timings. Having said that, two good films can co-exist as has happened in the past too."

Washington, May 18: Joining hands with the European Commission, actor Leonardo DiCaprio launched the Virunga Fund with seed money of USD 2 million to support Africa's Virunga National Park.

Since Virunga has lost a significant amount of revenue due to COVID shutdown post-March, the fund will be used to support the national park and the communities around, reported Variety.

The fund is aimed at disease prevention efforts, protection of mountain gorilla, and other species.

"I had the great honor of meeting and supporting Virunga's courageous team in their fight against illegal oil drilling in 2013," Variety quoted DiCaprio as saying.

"Virunga urgently needs funds to protect the endangered mountain gorilla population, to provide support to the rangers and the families of rangers who have fallen in the line of duty, and to help deliver essential disease prevention efforts. It's critical that we rally together during this time of incredible crisis," he added.

The 'Titanic' actor had earlier produced a Netflix documentary film 'Virunga' which is based on the national park.

California, Jun 30: Online video-sharing platform YouTube on Monday banned several prominent channels, including those belonging to Stefan Molyneux and Richard Spencer.

The company banned six channels for repeatedly violating YouTube's policies.

According to The Verge, other channels banned include American Renaissance (with its associated channel AmRen Podcasts) and the channel for Spencer's National Policy Institute.

YouTube began taking stern measures on supremacist channels in June 2019.

"We have strict policies prohibiting hate speech on YouTube, and terminate any channel that repeatedly or egregiously violates those policies," the Verge quoted a YouTube spokesperson as saying.

"After updating our guidelines to better address supremacist content, we saw a 5x spike in video removals and have terminated over 25,000 channels for violating our hate speech policies," the spokesperson added.

Mumbai, Aug 1: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has said that Sushant Singh Rajput case should not be politicised or used to create friction between Maharashtra and Bihar.

Amid the ongoing criticism faced by the Mumbai Police following an investigation into Rajput's death case, the Chief Minister stressed that Mumbai Police is not "inefficient" while appealing those who have any evidence in regard to the case to step forward.

"Mumbai Police is not inefficient. If anyone has any evidence they can bring it to us and we will interrogate and punish the guilty. Please do not use this case (Sushant Singh Rajput death case) as an excuse to create friction between Maharashtra and Bihar," Thackeray said on Friday.

"Bringing politics in the case is the most deplorable thing to do," he added.

Maharashtra government has filed a caveat before the Supreme Court in the Rajput's death case.

Earlier, Bihar government and Rajput's family have filed caveats in the top court seeking to challenge actor Rhea Chakraborty's petition that sought transfer of the FIR registered in Patna to Mumbai in the actor's death case.

"After Bihar government and Rajput's family filed a caveat in the Supreme Court, Maharashtra government has filed a caveat before the SC today to ensure that no order is passed in Rhea Chakraborty's petition case without hearing its (Maharashtra) side," said Sachin Patil, standing counsel for Maharashtra Government.

A caveat is a legal process, in which the party which had filed it before the concerned court, shall have to be heard definitely before the concerned court passes any order in future.

Bihar Police has sought the assistance of Mumbai police to probe the Sushant Singh Rajput case, Mumbai police Crime Branch officials told ANI. However, the Police are still considering their request.

Bihar Police team reached after an FIR was filed by late actor's father KK Singh against Chakraborty in Bihar under several sections including abetment of suicide.

Rajput was found dead in his Mumbai residence on June 14.
