Bengaluru, May 26: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president Dinesh Gundu Rao on Saturday took responsibility for the crushing defeat of his party in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, but stopped short of offering to resign as the State party president.

“I will submit a detailed report on the outcome of the Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka to Congress president Rahul Gandhi. Let him take the decision on my position in the party,” Mr. Rao told presspersons here.

Declining to reveal the content of the report, he said, “I am a disciplined soldier of the party and functioning as per protocol.” The AICC meeting held on Saturday in New Delhi has authorised Mr. Gandhi to overhaul the party organisation, Mr. Rao noted.

The KPCC chief congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his party’s victory and admitted that the poll results were “not expected in the wildest dreams”. He said that a combination of factors had caused the party’s and alliance’s defeat. “We accept the peoples’ mandate. But being the president of the KPCC, I will take moral responsibility for the party’s defeat. Otherwise, my conscience will not be clear.”

Noting many challenges for the party in the future, Mr. Rao said the electorate voted differently in the byelections in Chincholi and Kundagol and the general elections. “Despite many failures of the NDA government during 2014-19, the electorate voted for the BJP. The BJP leaders bypassed economic and employment issues. Security and Hindutva became the main poll issues to woo the electorate,” he said.

Acknowledging that strained relations between the Congress and JD(S) was one of the factors for the worst ever show, he said the Congress had performed poorly despite having party governments in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. “In different States, different factors worked for the BJP. The coalition government is stable and it will continue to function smoothly. No party MLA will quit the Congress at this juncture,” the KPCC chief claimed.

Hubballi, Jan 6: Elected representatives of the BJP, Congress and JD(S) on Sunday decided to sink their differences and fight unitedly for Karnataka’s rightful share in the Mahadayi and Kalasa-Banduri water dispute with Goa.

The meeting convened by JD(S) MLC Basavaraj Horatti here saw participation of BJP ministers Prahlad Joshi and Jagadish Shettar, Congress and JD(S) lawmakers, among others.

After a 70-minute closed door meeting, MLC Horatti told reporters that they discussed the water dispute in detail and decided to take steps based on inputs from legal and technical experts on the rightful apportioning of water. “Today, we took the first big step towards the overall development of the region, unencumbered by political divisions,” he said.

Though the air was filled with a sense of jubilation as the issue had united seemingly hostile political parties on one side, a few activists expressed disappointment that the meeting failed to set a timeline to resolve the dispute.

Bengaluru, Aug 6: Firebrand BJP Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya on Wednesday said that control of state power by Hindus is absolutely essential for sustenance of Dharma.

His comments, in a series of tweets, came on a day Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the Lord Ram temple at Ayodhya.

"Dear Hindus, Most important lesson is that control of State power by Hindus is absolutely essential for sustenance of Dharma. When we didn't control State, we lost our temple. When we regained, we rebuilt. The 282 (seats) in 2014 and 303 (seats) in 2019 to Sri Narendra Modi made today possible!", Surya, who is also the party's BJP youth Wing state general secretary, tweeted.

He also said that the survival of India depends on the survival of Sanatana Dharma.

"The Sanatana Dharma, that is nationalism,' Sri Aurobindo had said in his Uttarapara speech. But what does it mean? Along with Jai Sri Ram, the purohits also chanted Bharat Mata Ki Jai - That is Dharmic nationalism. If Dharma survives, India survives," he said in another tweet.
