Disqualified Karnataka MLAs discuss strategy for their political comeback

Bengaluru, Sept 13: Apparently desperate to make a comeback into active politics, the disqualified Karnataka MLAs on Friday held a meeting looking forward to get their case heard at the earliest in the Supreme Court and discussed development activities in the assembly segments they had represented.

The MLAs have approached the Supreme Court challenging their disqualification by the then Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar and are waiting for the matter to be heard for early disposal.

"We had a discussion on how, through our lawyers, the case be brought for hearing at the earliest," BC Patil told reporters after a meeting at Karnataka State Pollution Control Board chairman Dr K Sudhakar's residence.

Besides BC Patil and Sudhakar, other disqualified MLAs present were MTB Nagaraj, Munirathna, Shrimant Patil and Byrathi Basavaraj.

Nagaraj said they deliberated about the case and also the development activities in the Taluks they represented.

Nagaraj ruled out any "discontent" with the BJP.

Ramesh Kumar had disqualified 17 MLAs -- 13 from the Congress, three from the JDS, and one independent who had joined the Congress and later withdrew support to the then Congress-JDS coalition government -- on charges of anti-party activities on the complaint by the two parties in July.

Congress and the JDS alleged that the "coup" (resignation of 17 MLAs) was staged by the BJP as part of its 'Operation Lotus' to install its government, which emerged as the single largest party in the state.

The "mass" resignation had brought down the coalition government led by the then chief minister HD Kumaraswamy in July this year, paving the way for installation of the BJP government headed by BS Yediyurappa on July 26.

Their absence from the assembly helped Yediyurappa win the trust vote on July 29.

The Supreme Court had on Thursday refused to pass any order on listing of the petitions filed by 17 disqualified MLAs, challenging the decision of the then speaker to disqualify them.

"It (petitions) will come up. What is the urgency?," a bench headed by Justice NV Ramana told the counsel appearing for the disqualified MLAs.

Mangaluru, Apr 26: In the wake of the fears among local people regarding the cremation of coronavirus victims, an understanding has been reached with all stakeholders that the Mangaluru city corporation's crematorium here will be the official funeral site for such cases in future.

Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath, who had to face stinging criticism on social media for his alleged support to local people who stopped the cremation of a COVID- 19 victim at Pachanady near here on Thursday, took an active role in finding the solution.

The body of the victim, a woman, had to be taken from Pachanady to Kaikunje during the night, delaying the funeral by hours.

Kamath visited Boloor on Saturday and sought to convince the people that cremating the bodies of coronavirus victims would not endanger their lives in any way as the guidelines of WHO and union health ministry are being strictly followed.

The crematorium at Boloor is run by the MCC and has an electric furnace and firewood pyres.

Kamath said a tacit understanding that final rites of COVID-19 patients inDakshina Kannada will be performed at Boloor has been reached at a meeting with all stakeholders.

Cremating bodies in such a controlled environment is deemed safe as per guidelines, he said.

City Mayor Diwakar, local corporator Jagadish Shetty and MCC assistant commissioner Madan Mohan took part in the meeting.

The decision was conveyed to the DK district administration.

The district administration has also launched a campaign on dead body management protocol to convince the people to ignore misinformation being spread regarding the cremation of coronavirus victims.

Mangaluru, Jan 8: Dakshina Kannada District In-Charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, on Wednesday announced that the District Administration will organise the Karavali Utsava from January 10-19 at Karavali Utsava Maidaan here in the city.

The minister was addressing a press conference on Wednesday morning at the Deputy Commissioner’s office. He informed that a rally will march from Nehru Maidaan to Karavali Utsava Maidaan on January 10 to officially mark the inauguration of the utsava. 
The rally will be flagged off by Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary.

Beach Utsava and Kite Festival will be organised at the Panambur beach on January 17, 18 and 19 as a part of Karavali Utsava.

Bengaluru, Feb 8: The BJP on Saturday drew flak on Twitter for taking a swipe at Muslim women who appear to be standing in a line to vote in Delhi's assembly polls. ""Kaagaz Nahi Dikayenge Hum" ! ! ! Keep the documents safe, you will need to show them again during NPR exercise (sic)," the party's Karnataka Twitter handle posted using the hashtag #DelhiPolls2020. 

The video, which appears to have been taken from one of the polling booths in Delhi on Saturday, shows burqa-clad women flashing their voter ID cards. While the threatening tone of the tweet is unmissable, the tweet contradicts the government's statement that no person needs to submit any documents during the house-to-house survey for updating the National Population Register (NPR) and that information provided by individuals would be accepted and recorded. 

The tweet has added to the prevailing confusion regarding the NPR exercise in the country. 

The NPR is a list of "usual residents" of the country. In 2010, the data for NPR was collected along with the house-listing phase of the Census of India 2011. The data was updated in 2015 by conducting a door-to-door survey.

Currently, it has been decided to update the NPR along with the house-listing phase of Census 2021 during April to September 2020 in all the states/union territories except Assam.

Most of the opposition parties see NPR as a prelude to the contentious National Register of Citizens (NRC), which has been opposed by even NDA allies like the JD(U). The NPR questionnaire asked details like the birthplace of parents. In combination with the recently amended citizenship law, protesters fear that the registry might be eventually used for NRC. 

As a result, people, predominantly Muslims, have hit the streets as India witnesses one of the most widespread civilian unrest of recent times.
