With dissent brewing, by-polls crucial for BJP to survive in Karnataka

Dec 3: The future of BJP government in Karnataka depends on the by-polls in 15 Assembly seats. Though the party needs seven seats to save the government, BJP has gone full throttle to win at least eight seats so that there is no danger to the government.

However, BJP leaders claim that they are going to win all the 15 seats. Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, other minister and party officials are working hard in the Assembly constituencies.

In July, the Congress-JD(S) coalition government led by former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy collapsed after 17 of its MLAs resigned. The resignations also reduced the majority mark in 224-strong Assembly to 104.

The BJP with its 105 MLAs formed the government in the state. Now with by-polls on those vacant seats, the majority mark would increase which the BJP is trying to fill.

At present, there are 207 MLAs in Karnataka Assembly with 104 required for a majority. BJP has 105 MLAs. Now with the election of 15 MLAs, the number of MLAs in the Assembly would go to 222. With that, BJP would require 112 MLAs for majority in the Assembly.

So, if BJP wins seven seats, its government in the state would get the majority. However, the party wishes to win at least eight seats in the state. Elections for two other seats will be held in future which will take the majority mark to 113.

The ruling party in the state wants to ensure it has the required numbers. However, in around seven-eight Assembly seats, local BJP leaders are upset over party giving tickets to rebels from Congress and JD(S). Some of them are contesting the elections as independents which has increased the challenge for BJP.

CM appeals to people to feed stray animals near their houses

Bengaluru, Apr 10: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, expressing his concern over the plight of stray animals struggling during lockdown, called upon people to feed the animals near their houses and provide them drinking water.

In a tweet he said "Due to scorching heat and Lockdown, cats, dogs and birds are suffering without water and food. In cities this situation much serious. So I appeal to people that people should see that dogs and birds their get food and water.

Please be kind and take some time off to feed stray animals and birds around your homes. Try providing them with water and leftovers so they're not parched and left hungry. Stray animals depend on wastes and leftovers from hotels and restaurants and have been hit by the Lockdown to check the spread of Corona virus.

Shwetha Rasquinha conferred doctorate by Mangalore University

Mangaluru, Jan 2: Shwetha Rasquinha, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Social Work, St Aloysius College, Mangaluru, has been awarded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree by the Mangalore University for her thesis titled “Effectiveness of Social work intervention on caretakers of cancer patients- A social work study in Mangalore”.

She did her studies under the guidance of Dr Rameela Shekhar, Professor (Rtd), School of Social work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru.

Ms Shwetha Rasquinha hails from Vittal, D/o Vincent Rasquinha and Late Regina Rasquinha, and is the second person to complete doctoral studies from the Vittal Parish.

Her colleagues and well-wishers have congratulated her for her highest achievement in academics and successful completion of quality research.

Eid al-Fitr on Sunday, May 24 in coastal Karnataka

Mangaluru/Udupi, May 22: Two prominent Qadhis of coastal Karnataka today declared that Eid al-Fitr will be observed in the region on Sunday, May 24.

Twaqa Ahmed Musliyar, the Qadhi of Mangaluru and Ibrahim Musliyar Bekal, Qadhi of Udupi Samyukta Jamaat in their separate statements made this announcement.

The decision was taken as there was no news of new moon sighting in the coastal region today.

Ullal Qadhi Qurrathussadath Seyyid Fazal Koyamma Thangal Al Bukhari also announced that 24th May is first of Shawwal and Eid al Fithr will be celebrated on that day.

Moon sighting for the start of the month of Ramazan, for end of fastings- Eidul Fitr, for the month of Hajj and Muharram:

The moon sighting is so easy. We the people of India and have Indian Standard Time all.over India.

When we can accept the moon sighting in Delhi and announcement from Delhi as it was during times of Radio and Doordarshan news, why can we not accept the sighting of moon in coastal region of Karnataka and in Kerala?

Let us bring about change for good.

Why is rest of Karnataka or India not joining for Eid with coastal region and kerala? At the time of Radio and Dorrdarshan only days, all of India used to wait for 8.00 pm news for updates of moon sighting. So why not accept the moon signing witnesses in Kerala or coastal region?

I request all Indians to accept the witnessing of Moon sighting in any area of India and start and end Fasting.
