Diversity is the basis of our progress: Karnataka Governor

Bengaluru, Jan 26: Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala today said the nation should not forget its diversity, 'which is our basis' in its journey towards progress.

"Both social and economic development is included in ourcountry's developmental perimeter because ours is a diverse country. We will have to progress, keeping in mind inclusive development of all," Vala said.

"While focusing on development based on technological research, we should not forget our diversity, because it is our basis" he said, unfurling the Tricolour at the 67th Republic Day celebrations here.

The day was observed amid heightened security in the wakeof the recent arrest of six suspected terrorists with ISIS links from Karnataka and also a threat letter received at the office of the Consulate General of France here.

Vala, who took the salute during the ceremonial parade, said all should together strive towards making the country more powerful and work for all round development of the state.

He said secularism is the 'backbone' of the country and culture and it has been rightly tailored in the Constitution.

Complementing the state government for its progressive initiatives like mobile governance, amendment to the Panchayat Raj Act and new industrial policy, Vala also made a special mention about Karnataka’s participation in popular central government programmes like Smart Cities and Digital India.

The first ever participation of a dog squad in the parade, march past by a Maharashtra Police contingent and disabled students were among highlights of today’s Republic Day celebrations here.

Bengaluru, May 28: The Karnataka government has done away with previously mandatory COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers. 

The development comes a day after the government issued a circular, which allowed placing of international travellers into home quarantine if they had completed seven days of institutional quarantine.

A circular signed by Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary to the State Government, dated May 27, says that any “person who has completed seven days of institutional quarantine and is asymptomatic can be permitted for home quarantine with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR), subject to undergoing a medical check-up.”

This check-up equates to thermal screening (with a required temperature of under 37.5C or 99.5F and pulse oximetry of under 94%). 

The circular added that all elderly people, over the age of 60, and those with comorbidities (such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, heart ailment, renal disease...etc) are “required to be clinically evaluated diligently prior to shifting them for quarantine.”

On Wednesday, Pankaj Pandey, Commissioner, the Department of Health and Family Welfare said that these new guidelines were based on recommendations from the COVID Task Force. A member of the COVID Task Force said that new strategies had been formulated based on the latest findings on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus affects people.

Bhatkal, May 8: In a shocking development 12 new coronavius positive cases were detected in Bhatkal town of Uttara Kannada district in a single day. 

Around 20 days ago an 18-year-old girl in Bhatkal was tested positive for the covid-19. The source of this infection was the First Neuro hospital located at Padil in Mangaluru where a covid-19 patient from Bantwal had undergone treatment. 

Now, the Bhatkal girl’s family members and neighbours also have tested positive for the deadly virus. Madeena Colony, Usmainya Colony, Nawayath Colony, Tengungundi Cross, Hindu Colony, Kukti Nagar, Jali Cross and Azad Nagar are sealed down by officials after the confirmation of new cases. 

Those infected include a 5-month-old baby, elderly people aged 60, 75, 83 and children aged 3, 11 and 12 years. 

Meanwhile, Kumata-Honnavar MLA Dinakar K Shetty has written to Uttara Kannada DC urging the complete seal down of Bhatkal taluk.

Bhatkal, May 9: A day after 12 covid-19 positive cases reported from Bhatkal, seven more tested positive for the coronavirus in the town today. 

The new patients are: a six-month-old baby, a two-and-a half-year-old child, two girls aged 17 and 23, a 50-year-old woman and two elderly men aged 65 and 68 years.

The source of all these cases is said to be the First Neuro hospital located at Padil in Mangaluru where a covid-19 patient from Bantwal had undergone treatment a month ago. Around 20 days ago an 18-year-old girl from Bhatkal, who had been to the same hospital was tested positive for the covid-19. 

After the confirmation of 12 covid-19 positive cases yesterday, the throat swab of 60 people, who were in contact with them were sent for testing. Among them seven people – six relatives and a friend – were tested positive today.
