Bengaluru, Apr 10: After Bharatiya Janata Party appointed former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa as its chief in Karnataka state, the Congress has intensified hunt for a powerful counterpart. The KPCC president G Parameshwara, who has completed the five-year term, has been continuing in the post even after being inducted into the State Cabinet as Home Minister.
With the Congress high command busy drawing up strategies for the ongoing Assembly elections in five States, the Karnataka unit may have to wait at least till the declaration of poll results for the new captain to take on the mantle of the party.
While several leaders have been eyeing the key post, the names of a few belonging to the dominant Vokkaliga and Lingayat communities are doing the rounds. Energy Minister D.K. Shivakumar, a Vokkaliga, who is presently campaigning along with party president Sonia Gandhi in Assam, is the front runner for the post. Mr. Shivakumar was the working president of the party when R.V. Deshpande was the KPCC president during 2008-10.
Sources said the high command may support the candidature of Mr. Shivakumar, who is also the fundraiser for the party. A sixth-time MLA, Mr. Shivakumar is also one of the popular leaders among the masses, particularly in the Vokkaliga belt of the old Mysuru region. Moreover, he has the blessing of senior leaders such as S.M. Krishna.
Among the Lingayat leaders, the names of Water Resources Minister M.B. Patil, IT/BT Minister S.R. Patil, and MLA Appaji Nadagouda are doing the rounds, in the backdrop of reports that the high command was keen on having a new party chief from either of the two dominant communities. As the BJP has appointed Lingayat strongman Mr. Yeddyurappa, the Congress may prefer a leader from the Vokkaliga community, said a party insider.

Seven relatives who attended funeral test positive for covid-19

Kasaragod, Jul 27: Seven persons belonging to two relative-families who attended a funeral recently had been tested positive for Coronavirus on Monday.
Sources said the two families had been to Thavinjal near here for the funeral of a man who died at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital on July 19.
Later, the samples of these seven persons were sent for testing after they developed symptoms of COVID-19, the result of which came out on Monday.

‘Ride for Rotary’ to flag off from Mangaluru on Jan 19; participants from 14 countries

Mangaluru, Jan 18: ‘Ride For Rotary’ convoy of motor vehicles will be flagged off from Hotel Ocean Pearl Inn at Bejai-Kapikad, Mangaluru on 19th January, 2020 at 8.30 a.m.
Mangaluru has been chosen as the starting point for the convoy route this year which will cover Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. 38 Rotarians from 14 countries are participating in 2019-20 Ride For Rotary, which is the fourth edition of the event. They will traverse through Madikeri, Mysore, Wayanad, Ooty, Coimbatore, Munnar, Thekkady and Allepey before terminating at Kochi on 29th of January, 2020.
2019-20 Ride For Rotary includes 28 motorbikes and 5 cars. The participating nationalities are India, Norway, Sweden, Canada, France, Germany, USA, UK, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Poland and Belgium. They belong to ages 21 to 78, with 78-year old Otto Rieve from Canada being the senior most enthusiast. Swiss national of Indian origin Raj Patholi and Mangalorean Abraham Zacharias are among the riders. Delegates who have already reached Mangalore visited Bantwal on Friday to attend a gala dinner hosted by the Rotary Club of Bantwal.
Ride for Rotary is a charity event conceived by Rotary District 3181 which comprises of the revenue districts of Mysore, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Chamarajanagar covering 85 Rotary Clubs in 9 zones. Rotarians from across the world will come together for twelve exhilarating days. They will traverse through the meticulously arranged routes, enjoy the natural beauty of the places and experience the varied cultures and cuisines of the region. The proceeds from the event go to The Rotary Foundation, a charitable organisation that works tirelessly for the upliftment of the society.

49-year-old Bantwal man dies of coronavirus; DK’s death toll mounts to 18

Mangaluru, Jul 2: A middle aged man who was battling health issues due to kidney-related ailments, breathed his last at a private hospital.
He was tested positive for coronavirus.
The deceased was a 49-year-old resident of Kalladka in Bantwal.
According to sources, the man, was getting treated for tuberculosis and liver-related ailments, he was at home since 20 days.
On June 27 he was admitted to the private hospital in the city due to kidney related ailment.
With this, the total number of death of covid patients in the district reached to 18.
