Bengaluru, Apr 10: After Bharatiya Janata Party appointed former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa as its chief in Karnataka state, the Congress has intensified hunt for a powerful counterpart. The KPCC president G Parameshwara, who has completed the five-year term, has been continuing in the post even after being inducted into the State Cabinet as Home Minister.
With the Congress high command busy drawing up strategies for the ongoing Assembly elections in five States, the Karnataka unit may have to wait at least till the declaration of poll results for the new captain to take on the mantle of the party.
While several leaders have been eyeing the key post, the names of a few belonging to the dominant Vokkaliga and Lingayat communities are doing the rounds. Energy Minister D.K. Shivakumar, a Vokkaliga, who is presently campaigning along with party president Sonia Gandhi in Assam, is the front runner for the post. Mr. Shivakumar was the working president of the party when R.V. Deshpande was the KPCC president during 2008-10.
Sources said the high command may support the candidature of Mr. Shivakumar, who is also the fundraiser for the party. A sixth-time MLA, Mr. Shivakumar is also one of the popular leaders among the masses, particularly in the Vokkaliga belt of the old Mysuru region. Moreover, he has the blessing of senior leaders such as S.M. Krishna.
Among the Lingayat leaders, the names of Water Resources Minister M.B. Patil, IT/BT Minister S.R. Patil, and MLA Appaji Nadagouda are doing the rounds, in the backdrop of reports that the high command was keen on having a new party chief from either of the two dominant communities. As the BJP has appointed Lingayat strongman Mr. Yeddyurappa, the Congress may prefer a leader from the Vokkaliga community, said a party insider.

Man hacks four family members to death in Manjeshwar

Manjeshwar, Aug 3: In a horrific incident, a man hacked four of his relatives to death at Bayar near Kaniala Gurukumeri in Manjeshwar taluk of Kasaragod district.
According to police, Udaya (40), a resident of Sudanbala, killed three of his maternal uncles and a maternal aunt who were staying together at a house at around 7:30 p.m. today.
The deceased have been identified as Sadashiv (54), Vittal (52), Babu (50), and maternal Revati (58).
Locals caught him and handed him over to the police after tying his hands and legs.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a familial clash led to the gruesome murder. A police team led by Kasargod DSP Balakrishnan are investigating the matter.

Karnataka stops covid-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers

Bengaluru, May 28: The Karnataka government has done away with previously mandatory COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers.
The development comes a day after the government issued a circular, which allowed placing of international travellers into home quarantine if they had completed seven days of institutional quarantine.
A circular signed by Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary to the State Government, dated May 27, says that any “person who has completed seven days of institutional quarantine and is asymptomatic can be permitted for home quarantine with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR), subject to undergoing a medical check-up.”
This check-up equates to thermal screening (with a required temperature of under 37.5C or 99.5F and pulse oximetry of under 94%).
The circular added that all elderly people, over the age of 60, and those with comorbidities (such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, heart ailment, renal disease...etc) are “required to be clinically evaluated diligently prior to shifting them for quarantine.”
On Wednesday, Pankaj Pandey, Commissioner, the Department of Health and Family Welfare said that these new guidelines were based on recommendations from the COVID Task Force. A member of the COVID Task Force said that new strategies had been formulated based on the latest findings on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus affects people.

Karnataka govt slammed over deaths of eight patients in Kalaburagi hospital

Bengaluru, Jul 22: Congress MLA Priyank Kharge has questioned the Karnataka government on the alleged breakdown of oxygen in the intensive care unit (ICU) at ESIC hospital in Kalaburagi, saying he had got complaints that eight persons who were on ventilators had died.
He asked the government if it is "deliberately" hiding something about the patients that were admitted in ESIC.
"I have got complaints that eight people who were on ventilators are dead in ESIC Kalaburagi because there was oxygen breakdown in ICU. ESIC has not been admitting patients as the issue has not been resolved. Nobody is confirming or denying it. Is the Government deliberately hiding something?" he asked.
Kharge also accused the government of not having adequate facilities to combat COVID-19 in different parts of the state.
"I hope I am wrong, but if it is a fact, this ascertains that the administration has lost control over Corona pandemic in the district. No addition testing centre. No beds are available. PPE Kits and medical waste is thrown in Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS)," he added.
According to the Union Health Ministry, there are 67420 COVID-19 cases in the state.
