DK SP vows to remove people’s fear about police and build confidence

Mangaluru, Jan 2: B M Lakshmi Prasad, who took charge as the new Superintendent of Police of Dakshina Kannada district yesterday, has stressed on people-friendly policing and having mutual respect between the police and the public.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Prasad said it was necessary for the police to have a patient hearing of people’s problems. “There is a kind of fear about police in the minds of the public. “The fear will be removed by building trust and confidence on the police system.”

Mr. Prasad said he will strive to strengthen the new beat system put in place by his predecessor Ravikanthe Gowda B.R. in which a police constable discharges the role of an inspector of his area.

“I am keen on fortifying the (new beat) system,” he said and added that he will follow ‘people-friendly policing’ guidelines laid down by the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police.

Terming the district as more sensitive than others, Mr. Prasad said he believed in maintaining a good communication channel with people.

“But if the situation goes off hand, then I know how to handle it,” he said and added that this was his first independent charge of a district. The police will act as per law and will not be favouring any community, he added.

While maintaining that there was no question of allowing illegal sand mining and transportation, Mr. Prasad said he will study the issue and take necessary action, including creation of new check-posts.

Mr. Prasad, who earlier served as the Superintendent of Police of Anti Naxal Force, Karkala, said effective action by the State government had largely kept the activities of Maoists under control. The ANF and district police units are now tasked with continuing the vigil and maintaining the same control.

Mr. Prasad, a 2014-batch IPS officer, had his schooling in Kudremukh. He finished his B.E. (computer science) from R.V. Engineering College, Bengaluru.

Having worked for five years in an IT firm, Mr. Prasad cleared the UPSC in the second attempt to enter IPS. “It’s the drive to serve people and have a better understanding of the society that made me choose IPS,” Mr. Prasad said and added nearly 70% of IPS officers in 2014 were engineering graduates.

Mr. Prasad first served as Assistant Superintendent of Police, Bagalkot. He then served as SP, ANF before this posting as SP, Internal Security (Centre for Counter Terrorism), Bengaluru.

Will protest if Indian Muslims are troubled by NRC, says Ramdev

Hubballi, Jan 30: Seeking to disabuse people of the notion that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), recently passed by the BJP-led central government threatened the legitimacy of Muslims in the country, yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Wednesday said that he would among the first to take to the streets should the community face any such trouble. “If the National Register of Citizens (NRC) threatens injustice to Indian Muslims, it I not just I, but a billion Indians will protest against its implementation,” he added.

Recalling his longstanding association with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ramdev said, “I have known Modi for more than 15 years, and I can assure you that he cannot be called anti-Muslim. There is nothing in the CAA that threatens the rights of Muslims, some of whom are being misled by a few.”

The yoga guru said that, while 99% of the Muslims in India were patriotic, the remaining ones were seeking to divide the country, which he said was resulting in Islam falling into disgrace. “I appeal to all Muslims to keep away from such anti-national forces seeking to bring a bad name to Islam,” said Ramdev, calling on the people to stay united in the face of the severe economic crisis that the country was presently in the grips of.

He added that he was as committed to his goal of getting black money back to India. However, when quizzed by journalists as to how long he was willing to wait for PM Modi to realise this objective, Ramdev said, “Chodi, mere aur Modi ke beech jagada mat lao (Please do not incite a fight between Modi and me).”

The yoga guru also endorsed the decision of the Centre to recognise singer Adnan Sami with a Padma award.

Amit Shah should order police to act in nation's interest, control violence says Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru, Feb 26: Senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah should issue strict orders to the police in Delhi to act in nation's interest and control the ongoing violence.

"Distressing scenes in Delhi!! #DelhiBurning as a result of ulterior motives of divisive forces within our Country. Police have completely failed in their responsibility. People have to remain calm and promote peace in the area for their own benefit," Siddaramaiah tweeted.

"Seven people dead and hundreds are injured, Amit Shah should issue strict orders to police to act in nation's interest and not in the interest of few people. As Gandhiji said, An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. Peace and harmony should be our moto," he added.
Siddaramaiah further stated that the "triggering point of the #DelhiViolence seems to be the inciting speech of BJP leader Kapil Mishra."

"This actually qualifies for a sedition case as it was aimed at disturbing national peace and security. Police have to arrest him and bring normalcy in Delhi," he wrote.

Siddaramaiah has further asked Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to be careful "before situation goes out of hand."

"Delhi riots are in front of eyes. There will be tough situation here in state as well if those loose tongue leaders in BJP are not stopped in the state," he wrote.
As many as 18 people have lost their lives and around 190 are injured in the violence that has been raging in parts of North-East Delhi from Monday.

Karnataka BJP leader dies of covid-19; PFI activists perform his last rites

Koppal, Aug 3: The activists of Popular Front of India (PFI) have won the heart of the people by performing the last rites of a local leader of Bharatiya Janata Party in Koppla district of Karnataka.

Somashekhara Gowda, a senior BJP leader in Koppal’s Gangavathi died of covid-19. His family members were reportedly quarantined. His own party activists also were not ready to participate in the last rite due to the fear of coronavirus infection.

Following requests, a team of PFI comprised of district secretary Fayaz, and members Yaseen, Abdul Aalam, Shamid Razi and Husain Azarauddin performed the last rites as per Veerashaiva Lingayat traditions.

Speaking to media persons PFI district president Zaheer Abbas lamented that people still have plenty of misconceptions about covid-19. “Due to the misconceptions, performing the last rites of those who die of covid-19 has become a challenge,” he said.

He said that PFI activists followed all the health guidelines and took necessary precautions while performing the last rites. “Under the guidance of district health officials and with the consent of the family members of the deceased, the last rites were performed as per Veerashaiva Lingayat traditions,” he said.
