DK, Udupi ignore Karnataka bandh call; KRV activists face arrest

Mangaluru/Udupi, Jun 12: Normal life was not affected despite the Karnataka bandh call given by several pro-Kannada organisations in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts on Monday.

The organisations had given a call for the bandh seeking implementation of irrigation projects and other their demands.

Private buses operated as usual while transactions were were not affected by the bandh call.

Karnataka Rakshana Vedike members staged a protest in front of the service bus station in Udupi. The police arrested the protesters when they tried to block the road.

The protesters urged the government to implement a permanent irrigation project for arid districts. Mekedatu project should be taken up immediately. The mischievous acts by MES activists in Belagavi should be controlled by arresting them under the Goonda Act. The Kerala government should withdraw its decision of making Malayalam language mandatory as an additional language from Class I from the new academic year, they demanded.

Forum president Ansar Ahmed said Mahadayi project should be implemented to meet the long-pending demand of people. If the demands of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike are not met, the protest will be intensified. The district administration should start sand allocation as thousands of people are troubled as sand is not available for building houses, he said.

He warned of staging protest in front of the district in-charge minister and the deputy commissioner if the sand problem is not solved within a month.

Forum state convener Prasanna Kumar Shetty condemned the imposition of Malayalam in Kasargod, by the Kerala government. Protests will be intensified if the Kerala government does not change its stand, he said.

The bandh call did not evoke any response in Dakshina Kannada as well. All the private and KSRTC buses operated as usual.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 31: The Kerala government

on Tuesday rejected concerns of community spread of novel coronavirus in the state in the wake of the second death of a patient here who had no travel history or reported contact with any infected person.

Setting aside the concern, Health Minister K K Shylaja said the deceased man, a native of nearby Pothancode, was already suffering from several other health issues including high blood pressure.

The 68-yearold man died at the government medical college here, taking the total number of COVID-19 deaths in Kerala to two, the government said.

"We have got information that the deceased man had come in contact with some persons arrived from the Gulf. As he was very sick and was not in a position to speak, we could not collect details from him directly," she told reporters here.

"So we had to collect such details from his relatives now. As per preliminary assessment, it was a case of contact spread. So, as of now, there is no need to get panic about the community spread," she said

The possibility of death was high among patients, aged above 60 years and suffering from other diseases like heart ailments or diabetics, she said.

"That's why we are giving strict directions to the elderly people to remain in homes and avoid contact with infected persons, " the minister said.

However, the minister directed those came in contact with the deceased person to remain in self-quarantine and inform the authorities if they developed any infection symptoms.

In both the coronavirus deaths in the state, the deceased persons were aged and were suffering from other diseases, she added.

Mangaluru, Jun 11: Amid rising COVID-19 cases in the district, the officials of Pilikula Zoological Park are also following quarantine policies for animals similar to those for people arriving in the state from other places.

Zoo officials said that these rules apply only for animals that are brought from other locations.

The officials are keeping animals brought in a separate room for one to two months and their health is monitored by expert Doctors. If there are no symptoms of any diseases, the animals will be clubbed with other Zoo animals.

Bengaluru, July 29: The Central Crime Branch arrested four international drug peddlers belonging to Kerala and recovered drugs worth Rs 1.25 crore from them, said Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday.

"We have started a war on drugs. Our agenda is to curb the drug mafia not only in Bengaluru, but in entire Karnataka. Many people are involved in the drug mafia. They are targeting students, other states, and international students who can spend and afford to become victims," said Bommai.

The recovered items include 2,000 kg LSD strips, 110 grams MDMA Cristol, 10 ecstasy tablets, 5 kg Ganja, five cell phones, weighing machine and pouches.

"When we raided a house in Soladevanahally police station area, we arrested Shahad Mohammed, Azmal, Ajin KG Verghese and Nitin Mohan. All are from Kerala and we will arrest their contacts as well. They are involved in the dark web mafia," Bommai said.

He said the peddlers were using post offices and couriers for their business.

"I'll speak to the central government, the home ministry and postal department, and other issues related to this mafia. Canada, Netherlands, and other nations are also involved in this mafia," said the state home minister.

"People from influential backgrounds are also involved in this mafia, but our objective is zero tolerance. We are using our intelligence. Drugs are coming from other states like AP, Goa, and other states," he said.
Bommai said he was personally addressing this case and appealed for support from parents, schools and colleges.

"I'm addressing this issue personally because it's important to curb the drug mafia. I need support from schools and college managements and parents. I'll also call college and hostel managements before colleges start. We will make managements responsible," he said.
