Don’t carry more than Rs 50K cash without valid papers: CEO

Bengaluru, Mar 15: Election Commission officials have seized Rs 30 lakh cash and booked around 28,000 people in Karnataka under preventive sections of the Criminal Procedure Code to ensure free, fair and transparent elections.

Chief Electoral Officer Sanjiv Kumar said static surveillance teams, flying squads and police initiated action in various parts of the state. He appealed to the public not to carry more than Rs 50,000 cash and gift more than Rs 10,000. Kumar said: “Documents are not necessary if public are carrying cash less than Rs 50,000 and gift items worth less than Rs 10,000. If the cash or gifts are of higher value, then people may need to produce valid documents to explain the source of the money.”

Kumar said 1,512 flying squads and 1,837 static surveillance teams have been deployed. Static teams seized Rs 9.5 lakh cash and 30kg of silver worth nearly Rs 12 lakh, while flying squads confiscated Rs 20.5 lakh cash and a vehicle carrying articles worth Rs 52 lakh. Police seized 292 litres of liquor worth Rs 70,000 and filed 21 FIRs.

Meanwhile, the excise department seized 57,590 litres of India-made liquor and other liquor worth Rs 3.5 crore and booked around 124 cases, 69 cases for breach of licence conditions and 237 cases under Karnataka Excise Act. “Around Rs 4 crore worth liquor and 102 different vehicles were seized,” Kumar added.

In the past 24 hours, around 42,492 arms were deposited in various police stations and 296 arms were impounded and nine arms licences were cancelled. About 6,400 non-bailable warrants were also executed since the elections were announced.

No nod for private functions

Kumar said there is no need to obtain permission from election officials for private functions like marriages and other ceremonies. There is no need to take permission for public functions attended by political persons but such events will be under the surveillance of model code of conduct teams. “Legal action will be taken if there is distribution of gifts by political persons or they appeal for votes,” he added.

Karwar, Jun 3: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert, predicting thundershowers and heavy rainfall over north interior Karnataka, coastal Dakshina Kannada and Udupi over the next three days.

With Cyclone Nisarga hitting the Uttara Kannada coast on Tuesday,  parts of coastal Karnataka received heavy rainfall. Gusty winds tore through the coastal towns, as the sea too turned violent with rough waves smashing the shore.

The alert was issued with the advancement of Nisarga from east-central Arabian Sea to north Maharashtra, and adjoining south Gujarat coast. “Though it does not cover Karnataka, the range of cyclonic winds is very big and reaches north interior Karnataka also.

So an alert has been called out,” CS Patil, director in-charge, IMD, Bengaluru, said. The weather department has forecast a severe cyclonic storm and then a depression. Patil said formation of systems is a common factor before the onset of the monsoon and they help in its advancement.

“Cyclone Nisarga is helping in the quick advancement of the southwest monsoon to Karnataka, and the monsoon is likely to arrive before the scheduled date as conditions are favourable,” he added.

Mangaluru, Feb 1: Rotary Club of Mangalore city team represented by Rtn. Dr. Ranjan Rao and Rtn. Sumith Rao duo bagged the 14th Annual prestigious Rotary Quiz Trophy by securing 380 points. The Rotary Club of Vijayanagar Mysore represented by  Rtn. H.M. Harish secured 370 points and was declared runners up.

Rotary Club of Mangaluru central as a part of Rotary movement awareness campaign conducted their 14th Annual “Dist. Level Inter Club Rotary Quiz”  contest on Friday 31.01.2020 at Hotel Ocean Pearl Hall, Mangaluru. The Quiz was based exclusively on Rotary related affairs, matters and issues.

Chamarajnagar City based Eminent Pediatrician and Rotary past Dist. Governor Rtn. Dr.R. Nagarajun  graced the occasion as Chief Guest, in is address he lauded the  invaluable contributions of Dr. Rai to the Rotary Movement and congratulated on his achievements.  Later he awarded the Rotary Glittering Trophy, Certificates and Cash prizes of R.3,000 to the Winners and Runners up and congratulated them on their unique achievements.

13 Teams from Mangaluru, Bykampady, Panamburu, Deralaktte, Puttur, Mysore, participated in this contest. Rtn. Dr. Devdas Rai was the Quiz Master and officiated the closely contested  quiz contest. Asst. Governor Zone-2  Rtn. Geethanand Pai was the guest of honour he released the weekly club news bulletin “Centor”. Club President Rtn. Dr. Jayaprakash Poonja presided over the function. Secretary Rtn. K.M. Hegde presented the monthly report. Rtn. Prakash Chandra proposed the vote of thanks.  The event was sponsored by Chairman and Managing Director of Athena Hospital Rtn. Bengaluru, Aug 9: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has expressed condolences over the death of nodal officer who died while being on COVID-19 duty and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakhs to the family of the deceased.

The deceased has been identified as H Gangadharaiah. As per reports, he died due to a heart attack while on COVID-19 duty.

A government job and Rs 25 lakhs will be provided to the officer's family, according to Karnataka Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

"Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa expressed his heartfelt condolences over the death of H Gangadharaiah, KAS, who was on COVID-19 duty as nodal officer at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC)," Karnataka CMO tweeted.

"CM announced Rs 25 lakhs ex-gratia from Chief Minister's Relief Fund, a government job for a family member and instructed the last rites of Gangadharaiah to be performed with full state honours," the CMO added.

In the last 24 hours, 7,178 new COVID-19 cases (including 2665 in Bengaluru Urban), 93 deaths and 5,006 discharged cases were reported in Karnataka.

The total number of cases rises to 1,72,102 in the state, including 79,765 active cases, 89,238 discharges and 3,091 deaths, as per the State's Health Department.
