Don't precipitate probe into denotification case against BSY: HC

Bengaluru, Jul 7: The High Court of Karnataka on Thursday directed the Lokayukta police “not to precipitate the investigation” into a land denotification against former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa.bsy

The Lokayukta police is investigating into a complaint registered in 2015 accusing Yeddyurappa of denotifying land. He has moved the court seeking directions to quash the Lokyaukta proceedings against him. During the hearing, Justice Aravind Kumar asked the counsel representing the Lokayukta police, “what they were doing for the last two years as the complaint was registered in 2015?”

The Lokayukta counsel said investigation was being carried out. He said that if the court, at this juncture, orders not to precipitate the matter, they will not be able to go ahead with the investigation. The judge orally observed that if the petitioner is dragged into the investigation at a time when there is an impending elections next year, what purpose does it serve if he comes clean of the allegations after the elections.

The Lokayukta police is investigating into a complaint filed by one Jayakumar Hiremath against Yeddyurappa that as chief minister he had denotified 1.11 acres in Mathadahalli near Gangenahalli in Bengaluru, which originally belonged to Thimma Reddy, T Nagappa and Muniswamappa. He denotified the land in 2010 allegedly to benefit former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy’s relatives.

Survey numbers 7/1B, 7/1C and 7/1D of 17 guntas each at Gangenahalli village owned by Thimma Reddy, Nagappa and Muniswamappa were acquired by the Bangalore Development Authority in 1977 to form Mathadahalli Layout. However, one Rajashekharaiah claimed that he was in possession of the land and applied for denotification in 2007.

When he was the chief minister, Kumaraswamy had pursued to denotify the land. However, it was not possible during his tenure. When Yeddyurappa was the chief minister it was denotified in favour of the land owners in 2010. The denotification has apparently helped Kumaraswamy’s relatives, including his mother-in-law, who claims to hold the power of attorney from the original land owners, the complaint said.

Yeddyurappa has moved the court on the grounds that the complaint was registered in 2015 and there was absolutely no progress in the investigation by the Lokayukta police.

He contended that the case is pursued now to tarnish his as well as Kumaraswamy’s image to get political gain in the upcoming Assembly elections.

He has also contended that there is absolutely no evidence to prove that he gained by this denotification and, the complaint against him is only to target him politically.

Mangaluru, June 13:  The Central Crime Branch of Bengaluru City Police, which is digging up old cases involving underworld gangster Ravi Pujari, has now launched a fresh probe into the murder of human rights lawyer Naushad Kashimji.

Kashimji was gunned down on April 9, 2009 at the basement of his apartment in Falnir in Mangaluru. Ravi Pujari had allegedly ordered the hit. 

As part of investigation, a team from Benglauru CCB has come to Mangaluru. CCB sleuths, who obtained Pujari’s police custody in connection with this case, are tying up the loose ends pertaining to the murder of Kashimji who was representing D-Company hitman Abdul Rashid Hassan Malbari aka Malbari. 

Pujari was said to be unhappy over Kashimji representing Malbari. Pujari had also allegedly issued life threats, directing him to desist from doing so.

Kashimji had reportedly received more than 10 international threat calls from March 30 to April 9 (the day he was murdered). According to a senior police officer, the advocate had not informed the police or his then senior Purushottam Poojary about receiving the threat calls. “This came to light when police went through his call records later,” the officer explained.

“CCB team is primarily focusing on Pujari’s role in the advocate’s sensational murder,” a senior CCB officer handling the investigating said. 

“We have also lined up other cases in which Pujari is allegedly involved, but had filed the chargesheet against him in absentia as he was then a fugitive,” the officer added. The team is now picking up threads of Pujari’s involvement cases in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikkamagaluru districts.

Pujari, currently in police custody in Bengaluru, is accused in more than 30 cases reported in Mangaluru from 2007 to 2018. Majority of the cases against Pujari pertain to extortion and extending death threats, one relating to murder, three to shootings/ abduction and one where he supplied money to his henchmen in prison. Police have filed ‘C’ report in 17 out of 28 threat call cases and ‘B’ report in one case. Rest are in different stages of trial.

Bengaluru Jul 29: There will be a centralised system in place in Karnataka to classify asymptomatic, symptomatic and mild symptomatic persons and recommend treatment based on the severity of the cases, said Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar on Tuesday here.

"Various existing apps related to COVID-19 will be brought under one platform to get real-time information which will assist in strategising allocation of hospitals/beds to the needy. This will probably remove the delay in bed allocation and treatment which is being faced now. The patients will get all information in one phone call," Dr Sudhakar said.

Sudhakar spoke with a team of experts from the government and Infosys.

Referring to a company by name Step 1, which is providing such services in Delhi and Madhya Pradesh, the Minister said that a similar system will be implemented in the state as well.

"This company is having a team of doctors and nurses which is guiding the people whether they need hospital treatment or home isolation after they are tested positive for COVID-19. More than 70 per cent of the positive cases are being asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic and are advised to go for home isolation," the minister said.

"The load on the hospitals is reduced and severe cases can be administered proper treatment. Infosys co-ordinates with the government to provide technical support for this system," Dr Sudhakar added.

Earlier during the day, the minister held a video conference with the heads of private medical colleges to review COVID preparedness.
The government has already passed guidelines to allocate 50 per cent of hospital beds for COVID patients.

Madikeri, Feb 23: Back-to-back floods and landslides in the last two years, has led to a fall in the number of tourists coming to the coffee-growing region of Kodagu, forcing the district administration to intervene and take confidence-building measures, telling tourists that Kodagu was safe to visit.

According to the statistics of the Karnataka State Tourism Department, Kodagu recorded a moderately good number of tourists in 2018 and 2019, the years that the district witnessed devastating floods and landslides.

The Department’s statistics reveal that 17 lakh tourists visited Kodagu in 2018 and 18 lakh in 2019. This means the flood-ravaged years did attract tourists contrary to what the stakeholders had claimed.
